High Stakes 2004

Regular readers of this weblog will note that we haven’t done any blatant pandering to the Joss Whedon fans who come here.

Well, Joss has been a bit busy– not with Serenity or X-Men, but with something important…

High Stakes 2004: Whedon Fans for John Kerry & John Edwards

In every four-year term there is a chosen one. He alone will face the American public, the United Nations, and the forces of darkness. He is the President.

Join us and the Kerry/Edwards campaign at one of the High Stakes parties, or host one of your own. You’ll participate in a nationwide conference call to hear Joss Whedon tell us more about his latest endeavors and why he is supporting John Kerry and John Edwards. Joss has agreed to answer questions, with a goal of answering one question from each party if possible.

  1. Um, I can see the importance of consolidating a voterbase through events like this, especially with added star-power. But can anyone explain to me the use of having a fundraiser a week bedfore the election?! Seems like it would been more useful a few months ago…

  2. Heh.

I get enough of why a certain comic writer is voting for Kerry/Edwards right here, thank you.

  3. Does Buffy share rubber suit monsters with the Power Rangers? Or do the Power Rangers share there rubber suit monsters with Buffy?

  4. Well, in Florida at least, the Democratic Party will need the funds when Jeb Bush throws away a bunch of black people’s votes and gets his friends at Diebold to “erase” votes of the other races. (Recent evidence shows that Jeb knew his “felon voter rolls” were incorrect, and he kept removing those black voters.)

So, how did it taste when you drank the kool-aide?

  6. I hate to be cynical (well, actually I don’t in general, but in this specific case…), but, well, anyone can buy a domain name and put up a website. And this isn’t a subdomain of the official Kerry site. Is there any reliable confirmation that Joss is in fact involved with this?

  7. Jeb? How about the whole DNC?

    The DNC Kerry/Edwards manual states:

“In Florida, it is legal to handle ballots. This means it is possible for the campaign to canvass base neighborhoods, pick up completed ballots and deliver them to Early Vote locations. We will incorporate these deliveries into our Early Vote canvassing program.”

But Florida State election law – as detailed at: http://election.dos.state.fl.us/absenteevoting.shtml – is in sharp contrast and conflicts with the Dem plan.

“A designee may pick up an absentee ballot for a voter on election day or 4 days before election day. A designee may only pick up two absentee ballots per election, other than his or her own ballot or ballots for members of his or her immediate family. Designees must have written authorization from the voter, present a picture I.D. and sign an affidavit. Candidates may pick up absentee ballots only for members of their immediate family.”

It is not clear as this transmits, if any Dem operatives have yet collected ballots. A legal challenge will be filed to stop any action.

Dem officials point to difference between blank and completed ballots.

The exhaustive how-to FLORIDA VICTORY 2004 manual runs 26 pages with an 18 page appendix. It is signed by the DNC, Kerry Edwards, Florida Democrat Party, Kerry Edwards Campaign Chair, Florida Victory 2004, Florida AFL-CIO, Florida Education Association, Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers, and Florida SEIU.

I’m sure if any Dems have picked up the ballots we should trust them enough not to tamper?

Ask the folks in Nevada. Some bozos were caught throwing away Democratic voter registrations….

[Not that I think there’s any plan in Florida above and beyond simple human stupidity, but this comment kinda rings hollow….]

  9. Well, if Peter Garret can run for the Australian Labor Party, I guess it’s okay for Joss Whedon to suppourt John Kerry.

  10. “Does Buffy share rubber suit monsters with the Power Rangers? Or do the Power Rangers share there rubber suit monsters with Buffy?”

Nope, two completely different sets of rubber monsters (though off the top of my head, I can think of only one genuine rubber suit monster on Buffy, the She-Mantis from “Teachers Pet”)

  11. Too bad Buffy and her husband, whats-his-name (who isn’t good enough for her, dammit!) are Bush supporters.

    More importantly, so’s Adam Baldwin…

  12. More importantly, so’s Adam Baldwin

I don’t know about Adam, but I know Steven Baldwin is a Bush supporter.

He is one of a few people for whom 9-11 did change things. He is now a Christian (the shock, the horror!) and is working with Luis Palau to present the Gospel to others.

For those of you who did not like Bush’s comments about prayer, Steven Baldwin is one example of a former liberal who now gets it and agrees with Bush on this issue. (Just check out any of Steven’s latest interviews. He never outright endorses Bush, but it is clear his new faith leads him to believe in and support the current president.)

Did not know Buffy (assuming you mean S. Gellar) is Bush supporter.

  13. For those who care (which is probably not many), here is a link with info on Steven Baldwin to support what I said in my previous post:

    http://www.bpnews.net/bpnews.asp?ID=18925

Here is how the article stated Baldwin’s political views:

He stopped short of an endorsement but said he would vote

  14. Jim in Iowa wrote:

“I don’t know about Adam, but I know Steven Baldwin is a Bush supporter.”

Apropos of nothing…Adam’s completely unrelated to those other Baldwins. He’s to cool for them (I know, having met the guy). Thanks for the non-sequitur, tho’.:-D

And I’m going to stop there, because anything more I could possibly say about Stephen Baldwin would only get me into trouble…

  15. Is there anyone who actually can act supporting Bush?

Should this be a basis for who you vote for?

    Just wondering.

  16. Should this be a basis for who you vote for?

No, I’ve already made up my mind who I’m voting for. I was just curious.

  17. Is there anyone who actually can act supporting Bush?

Well, I thought Steven Baldwin was good in “The Usual Suspects.” But I would not go out on a limb and say he is as good as his brother, Alec. 😉

Since many conservative actors do not say much, there are not many to choose from. If Mel Gibson votes for Bush (and I have no idea if he would or not), then that would be the only one that immediately comes to mind.

  18. Fred Thompson, from Die Hard 2 and the newer seasons of Law and Order (standard) might fit the bill.

  19. Good Conservative actors: Hmmm.

Charlton Heston: Not in the films that I am sure that you will agree he played in pretty much the same character. In the mid 70’s, I saw him play Sherlock Holmes on stage in LA. He was quite impressive, I recall.

  20. Fred Thompson, from Die Hard 2 and the newer seasons of Law and Order (standard) might fit the bill.

    He said that could act!

Hmm…I’d say that Patricia Heaton at least would count…

Not that I think that naming names means anything; a lot of folks, whatever their leanings, don’t make ’em that public…

  21. Hollywood conservatives? Off the top of my head…(and only because I’ve made a list over the last few months)

Drew Carey, Robert Davi, Dean Kane, Dixie Carter, Kevin Sorbo, Bruce Boxlietner, Patricia Heaton, Angie Harmon, Kelsey Grammer, Robert Duvall, Jason Priestly, Shannon Doherty, Heather Locklear, Chuck Norris, Jerry Mathers, Kirk Cameron, Tom Selleck, Bo Derek, James Woods (big time), Adam Sandler, Tony Sirico (Paulie from Sopranos), Sharon Lawrence, John Rhys-Davies (though he’s not a citizen, definite Bush backer), Kathy Ireland, David Keith, Susan Lucci, Jimmy Walker (!), Dennis Hopper, Dennis Miller, for that matter, the South Park boys, Nancy Cartwright, Danny Aiello, Sylvester Stallone, Tony Danza, Lara Flynn Boyle, Emma Caufield (forgot about her when I mentioned Sarah Michelle Gellar and Adam Baldwin earlier), Tracy Scoggins, Jerry Doyle (that’s 3 B-5), Janine Turner, Ron Silver (though not necessarily conservative, definite Bush backer), Lisa Kennedy, Effram Zimbalist, Scott Baio, Dennis Leary, Andy Garcia, Matt LeBlanc, R. Lee Ermey, Rick Schroeder…

Iffy (meaning they are friendly with conservative causes but claim independence): Mel Gibson, Bruce Willis, Denzel Washington, Gary Sinese, Charles Barkley (although he loves Clinton and Edwards)…

Not necessarily actors: Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, Jessica Simpson, Ricky Martin, Rachel Hunter (yum), Kid Rock, all of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steven Tyler, Britney Spears, Wayne Newton, more country people than I care to remember…bunch o’ sports stars (Arnold Palmer, Pete Sampras, Tiger Woods, Jason Sehorn, Karl Malone, Mike Dikta, Reggie White, about 3/4 of baseball), Kim Alexis, Gloria Estefan, Dolly Parton, Steve Miller, Leanne Rimes, Pat Sajak, Pat Boone, Nickleback, Brian McKnight, Merv Griffen, Alex Trebeck, Ðìçk Clark, Ed McMahon, Wink Martindale (what is it about game show hosts?)…

And that’s all I really wanna list right now. What does this mean? That Hollywood is a LOT less “liberal” than people think? No, not really. That’s like saying that since Air America exists, there’s equity in talk radio.

And for those of you who are Buffy fans:

    http://www.opinionjournal.com/extra/?id=110005377

McCarthy truly is alive in Hollywood…and some people are terrified of being “outed” as conservatives. Check out the September Details magazine for…well…details.

    Hugs and kisses.

  22. And…I spelled Dean Cain wrong. Sorry Dean. Actually, he’s quite good in Clubhouse.

Just remembered…The Rock and Jean Claude van Damme. One of those two can act…I’ll let you figure out which one.

  23. Just remembered…The Rock and Jean Claude van Damme. One of those two can act…I’ll let you figure out which one.

I’ve both of them in movies. Neither of them can act.

  24. Just checked out the High Stakes site and there aren’t very many locations yet. Nothing near me, anyway…

  25. Glenn,
Nothing I’d like better. Unfortunately, with a 4 year old and a husband who works nights it’s not feasible. My contributions are small, but I’ve gotten several people registered and have talked to a more than a few undecideds and given good reasons on why they should vote for Kerry (ones they accepted). I wear my Kerry pin and talk to anyone who listens when I’m out and about. I got a bunch of extra pins to give out and I always mention where the local HQ is located so others can volunteer. Wait until 2008 when Kerry is up for re-election! I plan to volunteer on all my days off!

  26. He is now a Christian (the shock, the horror!)

Well, I always knew at least one of the Baldwins had to be evil. 😉

So, how did it taste when you drank the kool-aide?

You must be under the delusion, Ken, that somehow, this kind of comment is worthy of the debates that are conducted on this site.
Usually, said debates consist of both sides arguing with valid points to support their opinions.

In the end, I don’t think the taste of the kool-aide matters much.

McCarthy truly is alive in Hollywood

    Sure, just ask Bill Maher.

  27. Craig:
“McCarthy truly is alive in Hollywood

    Sure, just ask Bill Maher.”

Ok. Hey, Bill, how’s that ostracizing going for you? What? You’re hosting a show on HBO? But…but…that can’t be…

  28. So let me get this straight, a guy who writes a TV show about how sometimes an evil is so great you’ve no choice but to pre-emptively fight, thinks the war on terror is wrong?

    Curious.

I guess hatred really does cloud judgment.

    Curious, indeed.

  29. Re: the last two posts:

1)Setting aside the debateable connection between the war in Iraq and the war on terror – since endorsing Kerry may or may not have anything to do with Iraq – it could be argued that what Joss Whedon is doing right now is indeed trying to “fight evil” (or at least what he sees as “wrong” …. Acknowledging that calling the Republican hierarchy – at least as a whole -“evil” – is probably overstating. Probably ….).

2)Wow. Is this really true? Wish I lived in Los Angeles! 🙂

And by the way, I hope that “who can act” thing wasn’t a stab at Sarah Michelle Gellar (her husband, I’m less impressed with, but I’ve seen much less of him, too). Like many other actors(and everyone else involved with the show) on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, she deserved at the least several Emmy nominations, if not outright wins. (If they had a “Most Emotive Face” category, Anthony Stewert Head would have to have won several … though Nicholas Brenden would have had to get serious consideration for a couple of seasons himself, come to think of it. Anyway ….) SMG did some amazing work in her portrayal of a greatly heroic, and greatly human figure, one of the finest characters I’ve encountered in fiction, and should be very proud of her performance for the rest of her life.
