How many comic books I’ve written?
Seriously, I was wondering, ’cause I realize I’ve no idea. How many actual comic books I’ve produced in my writing lifetime.

Well, here’s what seems to be a relatively complete list of your Marvel stuff:

Peter:
The answer to your question is obvious.
Not enough.
I’m just wondering which is more profitable to write…the star trek novels or the comics. Not asking how much you make because that’s just rude; but which is more profitable?

Well, if you plug in “Writer” and “Peter David” to the Grand Comics Database (www.comics.org), you get 720 records. After that, it depends on how you want to count “comic books”; it counts each story/text feature in a comic as a separate record, so, for example, some of the Atlantis Chronicles issues produce multiple records. As do comics where you had one of a number of features; i.e. does a Green Lantern story in Action Comics Weekly where it was less than a quarter of the book count as a “comic book”? It also lists some Italian reprints of your Spider-Man 2099 stuff right at the top.
And, presumably although I didn’t check, it doesn’t include that Star Trek issue written by “Robert Bruce Banner”. 🙂
So, I’d say it’d be safe to say over 600; it’s also possible that some titles/issues haven’t been indexed yet.
I keep track of that on my Bibliography webpage:
http://www.geocities.com/padbiblio/index.html#13
The current total is 854 comics, excluding reprint TPBs and variant cover editions. That number is current through Capt. Marvel #25, Fallen Angel #12, SpyBoy Final Exam #1-4, and Soulsearchers #66. It doesn’t include the upcoming “Negima” manga books. Not sure if I should count those.
Corey
You know, if Corey didn’t exist, I think it’d be necessary to invent him…
PAD
comics.org has Captain Marvel only up through May 2003 in its listing, and no Fallen Angels.
Not for nothin’, but Corey…that is one hëll of an impressive site.
Ya know, I was gonna sarcastically ask if ‘A big farking pile’ was a valid answer, but then I went to Corey’s site. Nice Job!
Peter, that boy/dude/man deserves an autographed something…..
PAD:
>You know, if Corey didn’t exist, I think it’d be necessary to invent him…
Corey? Corey…… who? *bum…Bum…BUM*
(****Sorry, self amusement is a dangerous thing.***)
Corey; WOW!
“Peter, that boy/dude/man deserves an autographed something…..”
Or maybe inclusion as a character in a book?
“Peter, that boy/dude/man deserves an autographed something…..”
How about that painting Peter has of Michelle Pfeiffer dressed up as Catwoman? That’d be a suitably deserving token of gratitude, I’d imagine…
Robert:
>>How about that painting Peter has of Michelle Pfeiffer dressed up as Catwoman? That’d be a suitably deserving token of gratitude, I’d imagine…
Gahh!! I originally read that as “that painting of Peter dressed up as Catwoman.”…. talk about the importance of rereading for clarity’s sake.
“Gahh!! I originally read that as ‘that painting of Peter dressed up as Catwoman…'”
No, that would be the punishment for getting the number of books grossly wrong.
Does this include adapting for manga?
Impressive, Sir Corey.
Geez, anyone on this site who happens to need an archivist just got his wish, didn’t he?
Just to keep Corey blushing like a red light, I’ll add this:
When he and I “met” on a PAD e-mail discussion list five years ago, I’d been maintaining a personal Peter David bibliography for ten years. Corey had been building his for under two. Nevertheless, I was able to tell him of only three comics he didn’t already know about. Almost every major addition to the biblio since then — every exciting “discovery” — has come from his hard work and dedication. And the website you’re all so impressed by is 100% his doing. My name’s mostly on there for historical purposes now.
And for the record, I agree: it would be a neat tribute were PAD to name a character after his most devoted fan.
“And for the record, I agree: it would be a neat tribute were PAD to name a character after his most devoted fan.”
Does Excalibur still need a new helmsman? 🙂
Can you tell I’m an accountant by profession? 🙂
Thanks for all the kind words about the bibliography website.
A few points to address:
And, presumably although I didn’t check, it doesn’t include that Star Trek issue written by “Robert Bruce Banner”
That pseudonym just appeared on the submission to Paramount for approval. The final comic (#19) had PAD’s real name on it.
As do comics where you had one of a number of features…[does] less than a quarter of the book count as a “comic book”?
I think so. Otherwise you’d have to come up with a completely arbitrary minimum page count. I just count every single original comic featuring something by PAD as 1 comic. That means contributions as small as a single page (The Marvel Fumetti Book) or as much as 64 pages (Wolverine: Rahne of Terra). They all average out to about 22 pages, the industry standard.
And for the record, I agree: it would be a neat tribute were PAD to name a character after his most devoted fan.
You mean that lawyer on B5 “There All the Honor Lies,” Gwen Corey, and that girl in “Dinotopia: The Maze,” Gwen Corey, were named after Gwen Corey David and not *me*? Aw, man….
🙂

You know you’re going to go blind if you keep that up, young man.

Well, acording to our computerized filing system, 779. Granted, the collection contains a fair number of doubles, so I’d say around 760, plus or minus a bit.

WOW COREY!
Thanks for the list, here at thought I’d have nothing to read after finishing Neil Stephanson’s latest and you’ve just shown me that my reading has JUST begun.
As well, there’s some sick, sad corner of my brain that thought “A painting of Peter dressed as Catwoman? Hmmm… I’d like to see that.” Excuse me, I now how to explain this comment to my wife…
Re: thought it’d be in the thousands. Not if you do math and know that Peter started just a bit under 20 years ago. If one does one monthly comic, it takes 8.3 years until you hit 100 issues. So, to do 1,000 issues in 20 years, Peter would’ve been having to do ~4 books a month every single month since he started. While he’s certainly had runs where he’s done 4 or more books a month, he’s certainly not been at that rate (on just comics, he quickly added, recalling those 72 books…) continuously since 1984.
…so far, PAD, so far! I am hoping that your “writing lifetime” will go on for a very long time! 🙂
“You know, if Corey didn’t exist, I think it’d be necessary to invent him…
PAD”
*reading* Um, am I the only one thinking “Jeremiah” here?
Ok, PAD, come clean. Corey is really you…
(Unless, of course, that’s what you WANT us to think…)
I doubt PAD is Corey. His bibliography page on this site has Corey’s list from two years ago. Why he would keep it up to date on his “Corey page” and not on his own would be beyond me.
“I doubt PAD is Corey.”
I doubt it too.
Corey
Corey,
All I can say is : WOW! Great job! Clor me impressed! Here’s another vote for having PAD name a character after you!
BTW, I don’t know if you included it, but I didn’t see it and thought I’d mention it.
PAD had an article in Wizard #13 titled “How to Break In As A Comic Book Writer”. It was a first-person account by PAD on the ten most important things people should do who want to break into the comic business as a writer.
I recall it vividly in my mind because I adhere to the principles contained in the story to this day, and have even used the list to help guide aspiring young comic writers in a program at my local library.
So thanks again, PAD!
And again, great job, Corey. Hope you can use the info.
Excalibur!
PAD had an article in Wizard #13 titled “How to Break In As A Comic Book Writer”
That was a reprint of PAD’s BID column from CBG #976, which was also reprinted in the BID compilation book. I suppose the Wizard reprint could be listed as a variant edition…
Corey
“The current total is 854 comics, excluding reprint TPBs and variant cover editions.”
Well, that’s 849 more than me. I gotta get crackin’.
Thanks for calling the Corey Hotline. Here are some words that rhyme with Corey…. story… glory… allegory…
Obscure Simpsons Reference
Corey,
I noticed that Tong Lashing, #3 in the Sir Apropos of Nothing series is not listed in your extensive collection of PAD’s accomplishments. But hëll! It is still a fantastic list!!
Just thought you should know.
LR.
AACK!
Forget I said anything, Corey. Your list is right. I was looking at the varient editions section.
You’re the King, I’m the Knave.

“I doubt it too.
Corey”
You would. :p
Anyone care to count how many PAD fans there are out there in the world? I look forward to saying hello in a few weeks in Detroit.

I’m fairly certain that not all of his fans will be there.
Checking one of the links post above i have readed that PAD write Incredible Hulk Vol 3 N
PAD write Incredible Hulk Vol 3 N
if there ever was a fan who deserved an officially-endorsed link, PAD…! 😉
Dude, that is funny. I don’t know how much STUFF I have written either, so don’t feel bad.
wow!
Argggh! Corey’s Geocities site has disappeared!
Has it moved elsewhere?
Where do I go for an up-to-date PAD bibliography now?!
