THE SPIDER-MAN WHAT NOW?

Tom Galloway pointed out the Diamond Catalogue entry that lists an exciting new action figure: The “Ariel Flipping Spider-Man.

This, of course, prompts visions of Spider-Man chucking the Little Mermaid–or possibly my third daughter–into the air like a pancake. Or, hey…it could be exactly what it says: Ariel flipping Spider-Man, implying she’s either throwing him, or perhaps extending the middle finger of her hand at him.

Tom’s supposition is that it’s a typo for “Aerial.” But that couldn’t be it. Diamond, and Marvel, never make mistakes.

  1. Actually, I assumed it was a version of Ariel dressed as Spider-Man, and the “flipping” was just a comic-booky non-profane adjective, kinda like Doctor Evil’s use of “frickin.”

Did you see the new Ariel Spider-Man?

Yeah, Ariel Flipping Spider-Man! What a revoltin’ development!

  2. Thanks to Novi’s comments I now have a really disturbing image in my head.

  3. Yeah, I saw and made the Little Mermaid jokes, too. Then I realized some of the less clean connotations one could get from thinking about the name of the toy, and backed away slowly.

  4. You know, I’d spend good money on an Ariel Flipping Spider-man… I’d certainly do it before buying any of the other goofy Spider-man toys I’ve seen (Snowboard Spidey, Soccer Spidey, Beach Volleyball Spidey…)

  5. Actually, I thought it was a bunch of comic book guys dressing their kids up to humiliate them. I can see it now: Ariel David as Spider-Man! Neil Gaiman’s daughters Holly and Maddy as Death and Delirium! Th mind boogles at the possibilities.

  6. “But that couldn’t be it. Diamond, and Marvel, never make mistakes.”

Well, PAD, it looks like the hypnotic bio-chip Quesada snuck into your coffee is performing as advertised.

Or (more likely) you’re just being kind.

  7. My other favorite from these batchs of figures is the “Twist N Shout Spider-Man”.

Isley Brothers and/or Beatles figures sold separately?

  8. Could it be the new Exiles doll in which Kitty Pryde was bitten by the spider-becoming first the Ariel flipping spider-man, then the sprite flipping spider-man, and then the shadowcat flipping spiderman?

  9. Hurricane Heeran: Thanks to Novi’s comments I now have a really disturbing image in my head.

Luigi Novi: Glad I could help. 🙂

  10. Peter:

If your daughter is involved somehow, I’m sure you’ll help her make sure she gets/maintains whatever royalities, copyright(s), etc.; there might be from this. 🙂

  11. There’s still another interpretation. Perhaps “Ariel” meant “aerial” as in “antenna.” It could be a Spidey enraged by the way that Fair and Balanced TV media are covering him, and he goes around tearing down TV antennas in frustration.

  12. This reminds me of the time a Marvel ad referred to Moon Knight as the aviator of Khonshu.

  13. **Peter are you coming to the Baltimore comicon on Sept 20-21????

    I hope so!**

    No plans to, no.

  14. September 21st is New York is Book Country which we go to every year. It’s a lot of fun. Peter has agreed to sign at the Midtown Comics Booth. Times to be set later. I will be there with Caroline probably in her baby backpack with the hope of no repeats from the Renfaire.

  15. Better yet, how about Mary Jane dressed as the Little Mermaid? It’d be interesting to see John Romita’s J. Scott Campbell’s or Todd McFarlane’s versions of MJ in that getup.

  16. Come on, why couldn’t you have been at Midtown Comics when I was in New York several months back…

Seriously though, Midtown comics was one of the highlights of my New York spring term. Not quite Cabaret, but still a lot of fun.
