“The Woad to Wuin,” the sequel to “Sir Apropos of Nothing,” will be out in August, but it’s already been reviewed in “Publisher’s Weekly.” It received a starred (as in, “pay special attention to this one”) review, making it the third fantasy novel of mine in a row to get that kind of high-profile reception from the Bible of the publishing world. First the original “Apropos,” then the reissue of “Knight Life,” and now this one.
It’s a nice notion to shove in the face of publishers who believed I couldn’t write anything aside from “Trek” novels and media tie-ins.

Great. So now you’re the Peter David who can only do media tie-ins, Star Trek books and fantasy novels. But can you do Russian Cold War political thrillers? Victorian-era coming-of-age romatic novels? We want to read something that’s not derivate, but isn’t original either. And we want something new, but that we’ve seen before.
Congrats!
Y’know, I’d never really thought about writers being typecast before.
I had heard that it’s difficult to branch from comic writing to screenwriting and other similar endeavors.
What sort of other non-Trek stuff had you pitched that the publishers didn’t want to take a chance on?
I am very happy to read that. I just re-read the first Apropos book, this time the paperback version. I enjoyed it even more now than the first time because instead of finding out what is going on I was able to pay much more attention now on how the whole story is built.
There is also an excerpt of “The Woad to Wuin” in the paperback which I read with much interest. Hmmm…. I like it, I guess. It certainly helps that I am definitely not a fan of “The Lord of the Rings”. Hopefully Amazon will send me the book soon.
The excerpt of the new book is incredibly funny. PAD’s reading of it at last year’s Dragon*Con was the highlight of the weekend events for me. Esp the unintentional humor. Thought I was going to die. I have to go check out the paperback now to see if Apropos still grabs his “Staff.” 🙂
Congratulations, Peter!
Even though SAoN was a bit of a disappointment to me (I really thought Apropos was unlikeable, his nearly kiling his one-time best friend, rather than simply knocking him unconscious when taking the Phoenix was indefensible, and in all, it was a very depressing story), I’m happy things are going well, and I’m hoping I’ll like WtW better.
Just one thing, Peter–there aren’t any detailed scenes someone having sex with their sister in this one, are there? Reading one such scene from you was more than enough, thank you very much. 🙂
As the lucky owner of a galley copy of Wode to Wuin can I’d like to say that so far I’m enjoying it immensely. I’m not that far into it yet but so far I think its an excellent sequel to Sir Apropos of Nothing.
Oh and thanks for taking the time to sign it… and everything else I shoved in front of your face. 😉
