SDCC, Belated Day 4

My quietest day insofar as convention programming is involved. I only have a single signing at the Marvel booth, from 2-3.

I go down to the UPS store in the Marriott and ship a bunch of swag back home. I walk out, heading back to the elevators to go upstairs and am walking straight toward Misha Collins. We both stop dead, staring at each other. “Okay, this is just getting weird,” I say.

I attend the “Young Justice” panel. They screen an upcoming episode, which is great to see since Cartoon Network is showing constant repeats and isn’t airing anything new until at least September. The place is SRO; I almost don’t get in. When they invite fans to line up to ask questions for the last ten minutes, there are enough fans to fill up questions for a half hour. Next time they need a bigger room and more time.

I run into old friend Kathy Li who cheerfully offers her services as my entourage. I’m uncertain whether, if you have only one person, is she your entourage or your sidekick? But I accept her offer. So my entourage and I arrive at the Marvel booth and it’s packed. I’m thrilled to see all these people here for my autograph. It’s the best turnout I’ve had the entire convention. Then I find out, no, almost everybody is there for a group signing for “Castle.” No, not Frank Castle; the TV series on ABC which is, of course, owned by Disney. Particularly hilarious was that the actress who plays Castle’s daughter was dressed as a Browncoat. “Firefly” lives.

With the convention winding out, I grab my rental car and drive up to Disneyland. It’s where I usually go after SDCC, because it’s less crowded and the lines are shorter. Did you know they revived “Captain EO?” I did not. Talk about a blast from the past. It’s so effective that when I walk out the door at the end, I find myself wondering if I’m actually stepping out into 1986. Be interesting to go back to SDCC in 1986. And quieter.

  1. Great to read that the Young Justice stuff is still in the pipeline. It’s a good series and is truly missed at least in my household. I am looking forward to seeing what you wrote.

    1. Well, airing repeats during the summer isn’t exactly a new phenomenon in TV programming. We’re just used to previous seasons starting in September when they do that.

  2. Molly Quinn from Castle was actually dressed as Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly.

I saw the panel vid on Youtube…it was just awesome.

    1. Especially when her character in Castle told her dad during the Halloween episode, “Didn’t you wear that seven years ago? Let it go, already!”

  3. Wow, back in ’95 the biggest presence of Hollywood was Mallrats? I’m a fan of the flick a lot so I think it would have been amazing to be there, but I guess in about 5 years SDCC started to become a big studio thing.

  4. Was fun to run into you at the BBC America booth and at Mysterious Galaxy (seeing Peter fanboy moments – Oooh, those are signed?). I would have stayed on to bring your entourage up to two, but needed to get things organized at the ASZF fan table to pack out of the con.

(Leaving out the details of what you bought per your earlier post about buying mostly gifts).

  5. Ah, I met up with Kathy post-con (she departed early for the GRRM signing at Mysterious Galaxy), but I don’t think either of us were each other’s entourage. Although I did end up helping the MG folk unload their Comic-Con stock, so it could be argued I was in their entourage.

Btw, when I first saw Peter at the con, at the tail end of an earlier signing at Marvel, I had to exclaim “Look! It’s the Green Hornet!”.

  7. PAD, next time you’re at a signing with Molly Quinn (if you ever are), let her know you wrote some Star Trek novels. She’s a HUGE Trek fan.
