Young Justice League

People keep asking me about “Young Justice League,” a new animated series that Bleeding Cool News caught wind of that’s apparently evocative of “Young Justice.”

You know as much as I know about it. Some of you may know more. No, I’m not scheduled to write for it, no, I haven’t been approached, yes, if they did, I’d leap at it ’cause I loved working with those characters.

End of statement.

  1. So…………this means that they canceled Young Justice, even though it was selling well, simply so that they could launch a comic book to tie-in with a kids’ animated TV series, even though that TV series only lasted three years (much as I suspected it would, whereas well-written and well-illustrated comic book series can last far longer, much as Young Justice did, and no doubt would have continued to do, had it been allowed to), and even though the comic book series ended up dispensing with most of the characters it took from Young Justice, of which only two still remain??????

    Yep.
    .
    That makes sense.

Only an incompetent industry like the American comic book industry would arbitrarily shoot itself in the foot by canceling a well-selling series that people liked, and which could’ve gone on indefinitely, simply to tie into an kids’ animated TV show based on it (a good example of putting the cart before the horse if ever I knew of one), even though kids animated TV shows rarely last more than a few years anyway.

    Sure. Makes perfect sense.

  2. Oh, and forgot to add as the conclusion:

And now they’re going to have another animated show, this time adapted from the series they canceled in order to make the prior one, when they could’ve just done that in the first place, and thus avoid canceling it????

  3. Still one of my favorite comics. You and Nauck really hit that one out of the ballpark each and every issue. Here’s hoping you get a crack at the cartoon, or that they at least “borrow” from your characterizations and storylines.

  4. Funny, I kind of thought the Teen Titans cartoon was trying to be Young Justice. At least at times.

It was interesting seeing concept art for Arrowette, although it looks like they tried to split the difference between her appearance in the comic and Green Arrow’s costume.

    Hopefully it’ll be good.

Wouldn’t it be funny if they announced they were gonna cancel Teen Titans to relaunch Young Justice?

  6. I was just thinking “I hope no one’s pestering Peter David or Todd Nauck about this show now that word has leaked out. They moved on from these characters ages ago”. I hope fandom in general hasn’t been too much of a bother.

The more I see from this new series, the more I think it’ll be less like the YJ comics and more its own thing. From what rumors I heard, the only characters carrying over are Superboy, Impulse and Arrowette. The other slots in the roster will be filled with Nightwing, Aqualad and Miss Martian.

As for Luigi Nova’s concern, I think it was more than just the tie-in they were concerned with. There’s also the fact that Dan Didio is a huge New Teen Titans fan.

Anyway, if they were to relaunch Young Justice, maybe they’d do it with even younger heroes. The DCU currently has a 10-year-old Robin (Damian Wayne) and a 10-year-old Impulse (Irey West) and more kids of superheroes seem to pop up every day.

    1. AdamYJ: As for Luigi Nova’s concern…
Luigi Novi: Why do people keep comparing me to a Chevy? 🙁

    1. Yeah, I don’t think there’s much chance of the Mighty Endowed showing up in a cartoon series. Although a fan once actually showed up as her at a costume contest, complete with actual mighty headlights that lit up.

  7. *sigh* Young Justice was good. PAD, I always thought your work at DC was some of the best stuff they were publishing at the time; always a delight! I’ve been longing to see you work on some DC characters again. Animated or comics, either way would be sweet!

Er, yeah. Just thought I’d add my voice to the chorus, that’s all.

  8. If there were an original character of PAD’s from Young Justice to show up in a cartoon, it would probably be someone more along the lines of Empress, Harm, The Acolyte or maybe some of the Point Men.

  9. Supposedly the line-up is going to be Kon, Impulse, NIGHTWING (no Robin, probably because of the Bat-ban), Arrowette, Miss Martian and a black Aqualad that may be a mashup of Aqualad and Lagoon Boy. No Wonder Girl, because of similar restrictions on the Wonder Woman cast. So it’s not QUITE the cast Peter worked with, but I’m sure he could adapt if properly motivated. My only hope is that it’s as good as Teen Titans (the series) was. Young Justice remains a fond memory for me.

    1. Y’know, it actually looks more to me like what the networks originally asked for the Justice League cartoon to be. Originally, Cartoon Network wanted something with Batman mentoring teenage versions of Justice League characters. Later on it morphed into something involving Robin, Impulse and a girl version of Cyborg. Later, those three characters were dropped. Still, the lineup makes it look like it’s basically a teenage version of the Justice League. It’s got analogues to Superman, Batman, Flash, Martian Manhunter, Aquaman and Green Arrow.

  10. I actually saw this on a forum not long ago and hadn’t thought much about asking what you thought of it. But the idea of you writing for it REALLY intrigues me. Who do I email to get you on the staff for a few eps per season? 😀

  11. I don’t care as much about Peter David writing for the show because I don’t remember…. never mind… if Peter David was writing it I would rip it from the internet and keep it forever….

My question is…. would you get paid for original characters or concepts?

  12. Well, if I play my cards right, and luck goes my way, I fully intend to make a Young Justice video game, and Peter, I’d be honored if you wrote the script. Unfortunately, I’m still in college, so that dream’s an awfully long way off.

  13. I heard Young Justice the tv series wasn’t cancelled. It’s going to continue on later this year.
