Congrats to Kelly Kulick

Not only is she the first pro bowler to be featured in a Marvel Comic book, but she can add to her resume being the first woman to win a PBA title, having won the Tournament of Champions yesterday in Vegas. The result is a big honkin’ trophy, a two year exemption on the PBA tour meaning she’s back on the tour next year, and a $40,000 payday.

And all I could think was, Oy, she’s got $40,000 and she’s in Vegas. This could end badly.

Seriously, this happened in Vegas, but it’s not staying there. It’s a new world and she’s the first citizen in it. So for those of you whose first exposure to her was in the pages of “Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” see what can happen? (Actually, now that I think about it, Stephen Colbert showed up in FNSM before he turned up in any other Marvel Comic. I sure can pick ’em.)

  1. Along the lines of “bad things that could happen in Vegas,” at least she HAS $40K to spend there. You don’t need to have money to lose it at the tables.

  2. Well, my understanding is that the event was out at Red Rock. So while there’s a casino next to the lanes, she’s otherwise relatively isolated from the Strip (and, if she’s into the outdoors, some really nice desert/canyon scenery and hiking areas).

  3. I don’t have much interest in professional bowling, but any friend of Flash Thompson can’t be bad, so she has my full congratulations.

  4. Let my add my voice to the chorus of voices saying

    “There are PROFESSIONAL bowlers?!?”

    is that my coat?

  5. Did you read this drivel?: http://www.fanhouse.com/2010/01/25/chris-barnes-the-guy-who-lost-to-a-girl/?icid=main|main|dl8|link3|http%3A%2F%2Fwww.fanhouse.com%2F2010%2F01%2F25%2Fchris-barnes-the-guy-who-lost-to-a-girl%2F

You can summarize the writer’s attitude in just one sentence, one he wrote himself: Rule No. 1 in determining whether an activity is a sport: If the best female in the world can beat the best male in the world, it doesn’t qualify.

    Jeeze, feeling inadequate much?

There’s an interesting question somewhere in there about what makes a sport a sport (as opposed to an activity or game,I guess) but making a blanket statement like “If the best female in the world can beat the best male in the world, it doesn’t qualify” just makes me really want to see a female win at some completely undeniable sport just to see guys like this writer have to squirm.
