I got Mighty Avengers. It concluded the current arc, and it did not disappoint. As I said last month, it is a throwback to the original avengers. Yet it has some good twists. I can’t wait to see where it goes next.
.
One character important to PAD X-Factor fans is Pietro. This issue’s conclusion takes him down an interesting path. It is definitely in character, though felt a little different than where PAD left him. That said, the final interaction with a family member was quite tragic. This version of the Avengers, while a lot of fun, does not hesitate to mix in some tragedy as well.

Iowa Jim
Iowa Jim, that was a nicely written review. Spoiler-free to boot. You’ve made New Avengers sound intriguing. I may give it a try based on the strength of your recommendation.
I am sure that you know this Bill, but that was MIGHTY Avengers, not NEW Avengers.
I only point it out because if I can save just one person from having to read New Avengers than I will have dona a good thing..
Spider-Woman 2 and 3– (they got gypped on #2 and the reorders just came in). I finished reading #2. I’ll get to three this evening.
Brave and The Bold– an amusing team up with Bruce and Brother Power. I’m still giving JMS three more issues to get the series going somewhere again before I drop it.
Adventure Comics- Haven’t gotten to it yet.
The Long JSA special- Haven’t gotten it yet.
And something else that I haven’t gotten to yet that I would want to go down the hall to check on.
Wolverine: The First Class is not on the list for January. Is that book dead?
“Gypped” is such an unpleasant word. Perhaps you could something a little less offensive in its place?
**Alan Coil: “Gypped” is such an unpleasant word.
**Perhaps you could something a little less offensive **in its place?
Hmm. I never really found “gypped” to be all that offensive. I know the origins of the word, of
course, but somehow just never really assocaited it as being an insult to a group of people. It is one fo those words that almost transcended its origins. Then again, if one person still finds it offensive, therea are likely others.
I completely spaced it yesterday working on my homework assignment, but I’m planning on picking up Amazing Spider-Man and Pak’s Incredible Hulk today. If all goes well, we’ll get out of class early. I’ve heard a lot of good stuff on IH #604…
Incred. Herc (which I haven’t read yet), the Dr. Horrible one shot (which was a nice piece of fluff with some fun stuff including his origin and the art struck a very good balance between wacky cartoon-y and accurately representing the original cast) and an old Black Widow TPB with JG Jones art that I got for half price.
“Showcase Presents: DC Comics Presents: The Superman Team-Ups”. (Which may, themselves, present at some point, but I’m not far enough along to be able to say for sure.)
So far, it’s pretty typical Bronze-Age DC, which is to say a little too-continuity heavy and still mired in Silver Age “and then stuff happens” style storytelling, but still quite a bit of fun if you can just let yourself go and get into the mindset for it.
I got a rock.

These days i can’t even afford to drive twenty miles to the nearest comic shop (Gainesville to Buford, GA) weekly – much less buy comics.
Lesseenow:
Amazing Spider-man, Spider-man: The List, Spider-woman, and Irredeemable. The last one was the best, although for $3.99, you do not get much story. If it wasn’t that I know the artist, Peter Krause, and try to collect everything he does, I may wait for the graphic novel. $3.99 for a comic may be my limit for a single comic book…
Hey there. It was guilty pleasure week, or characters I’ve been following since I was a toddler week, or something along those lines. X-Men: Legacy and Spider-Woman. I’m not sure if Mike Carey’s X-Men counts as a guilty pleasure, but I can never quite explain my love of Rogue that has lasted decades, except that Avengers 10 was the first comic I bought on my own motivation and read without asking Dad for help. I miss how Spider-Woman’s powers used to be out of control, her phermones I mean… making men fall for her instantly, and making women always get their backs up around her. But I have serious sweet tooth for big rambly Bendis-ramble. Oh which this has in spades. So happiness all around.
I’m becoming a troll here, because I really want to write an article about Mr. David and some of the queer subplots in X-Factor, and I’m not sure how to go about getting in touch with him. So I’m just gonna keep hanging out and hope to catch his attention.
OH… and to Iowa Jim… how are you liking the Mighty Avengers? Slott’s first arch didn’t rub me right and I lost interest, and now Scientist Supreme… Quicksilver at his best (character wise, not best as in temperment)… so my curiosity is peeked.
A good day: bought CBG, Showcase: DC Comics Presents, and Powers Encyclopedia. Plus my dealer gave me a free large-sized Inglourious Bášŧërdš poster.
I initially wasn’t going to get anything this, as I didn’t notice on this week’s list anything that I usually buy. However, I passed by my weekly shop anyway on the way to performing an errand, and decided to stop by anyway, because sometimes, when looking over the books that the manager has laid out on the back issue bins prior to bagging them all, I sometimes either find something I missed when looking over the list on the Net, or peruse something that I end up buying.
.
I ended up buying IDW’s Transformers #1, not because I usually buy Transformers comics (though it does hold some nostalgia for me, because Marvel’s version of it in the 90’s was the first book I ever bought regularly, and was my gateway comic for the rest of Marvel’s line), but because sometimes, when I encounter a brand new artist whose style blows me away, I like to have at least one book from him/her to have around on my bookshelf. I never thought I’d be so impressed with another style of rendering the Transformers after the animation style employed by Pat Lee and his imitator, but artist Don Figueroa‘s style blows me away. Detailed, articulate, and beautiful, with an assertive way of depicting the characters.
I also bought the new CBG, because I found Peter’s BID on the publication origin of Spider-Man to be interesting, and I figured it might contain some details not already in Wikipedia’s article on the character that I could add. I was also amazed at how the size of the mag had been reduced. I remember seeing how the page count went down several months, maybe a year ago, but I didn’t realize that so much of the glossy pages were now replaced with newsprint again, and even BID is only one page. It reminds me of when the mag was a weekly newspaper.

I didn’t get anything. I buy comic books on Saturday like a normal person.
On this past Saturday, I got the first issue of SWORD, which I never heard about until I saw a review on another website I look at. I don’t think there is any way I would’ve bought it if I hadn’t read that review. Anyway, it’s a decent enough book. The scripting is better than the plot or the premise. It’s by someone named Kieron Gillen, whom I’d never heard of before, but his scripting reminds me of Peter David for some reason. You can decide for yourself whether to take that as a compliment or an insult. (I meant it as a compliment. To Kieron.)
I also got a New Mutants and the new Dr Strange. (Both a bit weak, but good enough.) And I got a couple of old books, including a New X-Men, which I love. (Not that overated Grant Morrison snoozefest. I mean the REAL New X-Men, by DeFillipis and Weir. An X-Men story about kids in school, with real teenage character interaction and very little action, the way X-Men series are supposed to be, so naturally, the series didn’t last too long.)
Then I went to the regular bookstore. Oftimes, they sell their remaining comics for 99 cents after a few months. That’s how I get a lot of the books I like, but can’t afford to buy regularly. However, they did not have those discounted issues this week. Instead, they had two long boxes full of old comics for 99 cents each. Not four or five months old– but old. The newest ones were more than two years old, and most were older than that. Several were from the ’80s or ’90s, and there was even a Luke Cage, Power Man from 1975! All in good condition, at a regular bookstore that doesn’t sell used comics normally. I ended up buying ten of them, although that meant I spent more that day than I would’ve preferred. But hey, I might not get a chance at a deal like this again. (The comic book store has limited shelf-space, so they mostly limit their back issues to books that are in demand, and there are none under two dollars.)
I got Secret Wars #12!!! Finally! I’ve been waiting twenty-five years to find out how that story ended! (There is a copy at the comic-book store, but they charge six dollars for it, and I’m not willing to pay that much.)
Let’s see, I got X-Men: Legacy #229, Zorro #17, Mighty Avengers #31, Nomad #3(of 4), Justice Society of America 80-Page Giant, Adventure Comics #4, Brave and the Bold #29, Flash: Rebirth #5, and the Black Knight one-shot.
The only ones I’ve read so far are Flash: Rebirth #5 and the Black Knight comic. The Flash comic was pretty good. It cleared up a sticking point I had from earlier in the series. It also brought back a name and costume that fans of PAD’s late ’90s DC work may recognize. The Black Knight one was okay. However, it was telling the origin of the character and the Ebony Blade, which I’m sure was covered before in a completely different story.
I also tried to get the new issues of Mickey Mouse and Friends and Walt Disney Comics and Stories. However, it seems I go to the one comic shop in the US where Disney comics actually sell out.
I won’t get anything till my monthly bundle arrives next Tue/Wed but the comic I’m most excited about getting is Maus, which, to my eternal shame, I have never read. I’m told I’m in for a treat.
(I was expecting it last month…but it was out of stock 🙁 )
Jess Willey said, “Wolverine: The First Class is not on the list for January. Is that book dead?”
I, too, am fretting most grievously over this possible tragedy. Might it just be on temporary hiatus? It’s been one of my favorite Marvel titles ever since it started.
Well… I assume someone is seeing my posts, as they aren’t getting posted.
If Mr. David is seeing this… we’ve met a couple of times, I used to be the buyer for the Silver Snail in Toronto. I realize you are super busy, but I would love to cover X-Factor in Xtra! magazine, I can’t see how the exposure in a queer magazine would hurt.
Please get in touch. If you are seeing all of my non-posts, please get in touch.
I made an advance payment for the latest X-Men Legacy but I have yet to pick it up. Darn it! December is soooo close but so far away. I can’t wait anymore for X-Factor #200. Because I couldn’t get my fix, I ended up splurging on X-Factor hardcovers. Now, I’m penniless. 🙁 Your fault for being such a GREAT writer, PAD. *bows to you*
PS Because of the high cost of comics in the Philippines, I’ve decided to drop X-Men Forever and just stick with Legacy (although Mike Carey still doesn’t know what the heck he’s going to do to Gambit) and X-Factor. Maybe you should consider moving Gambit over to Madrox’s squad. You certainly write the characters a hëll of a lot better than Carey. :p
Just to stay on topic, I’ll mention I picked up Dark Avengers 11. But I wanted to ask Peter, you’ve done several book signings and I was wondering how difficult it is to sign 1000 books? I saw this link at the Huffington Post of Sarah Palin leaving a Border’s Bookstore signing with 1000 upset fans disappointed that she didn’t sign their books! At least she could have explained to the crowd why they had to leave. Seems rather cold to leave like that. Funny, those Sarah Palin fans!
I picked up a copy of the “Marvels” TBP for half price. This is to rplace the individual comics I once owned but were gotten rid of along with half my collection when I left it in the care of my sister and brother-in-law after I moved to LA.
But that’s another story….
Dear PAD, When is Fallen Angel #5 going to come out? I ask because I no longer trust any of the Comic shops in my area. (The Golden Apple in LA being one of them I’m sad to report.) Let me tell you what has been happening. I bought FA #1 on the Day of it’s release, yay. Then when I went back to Golden Apple the following month for #2 only to find out it had sold out. Booooo. I wen to 2 other shops in the area and even one that was out my way and they all said the same thing: sold out. Now this is good news/bad news. Good because you sold out. Bad because they didn’t order enough, and worse becuase in the following weeks, not one of them re-ordered it. OK. Now it’s time for issue 3. I picked up the last copy (I made a point to get there early on the day of release) and got the last copy of #3 on the shelf. (At Golden Apple.–Don’t know anything more. I got my copy and didn’t check any other comic shop or worry about re-orders.)
Issue 4. I was there on the 7th of October and told (by GA) “Sorry, didn’t ship.” I was there the 14th and told “Sorry, didn’t ship.” I was there the 21st and told “Sorry, didn’t ship.” I tried two other comics shops in my area and none of them seem to even know what I was talking about. Back to Golden Apple on the 28th and it still hasn’t shipped yet.
Now we’re into November and on to “Green Hëll Comics(and record)Shop,as I’ve lost faith in Golden Apple.
On the 4th they tell me #5 hasn’t shipped yet and on the 12 it hasn’t shipped yet, and no luck on the 19th (although that was the day I stumbled across the Marvel TBP for half price, so still…Score!)
So really, what’s going on here? Fallen Angel is the only comicbook series I still collect, and I hope this post comes across a well balenced, casual concern for the future of the series and a fantic rant from a fan going through major “Lee” withdrawals.
Thank you.
I only got six books this week, all Marvel.
SPIDER-WOMAN #3 was a fun read, but felt a little decompressed. Malev’s art was beautiful as always—- actually even more so than usual, but I couldn’t help but feel like this arc will read better in one sitting. I dunno, are the motion comic webisodes any good? Maybe that’s the better format for this thing.
AMAZING SPIDEY 612 was kinda disappointing. I enjoy Mark Waid’s take on Spidey, but some pretty ham-fisted back-tracking on some recent developments (no spoilers) was a let-down. After OMD, Spidey can’t be married. But apparently it’s also not okay for him to act like a normal single 20-something. Soooo…. we’re just going back to wheatcakes and high school, or what? Also: the Electro plot feels somewhat dated already. In a few years, it’s gonna read like “let’s put Beatle wigs on our guys!”
Also got DARK AVENGERS, THE LIST: SPIDEY, X-MEN LEGACY, and WOLVERINE: WEAPON X. Dark Avengers was far and away the strongest of the bunch. I always love seeing Molecule Man, and I wish he’d pop up more often. The interaction between him and Norman was gold. THE LIST: SPIDEY was pretty solid, though I think it’s a bit weird to swing for the fences with a big Capra speech, then have someone on the next page refer to Capra. Kinda beating the reader over the head at that point…
Overall: good week.
I enjoyed Mighty Avengers, Invincible (which is still fun), and Flash Rebirth. I haven’t read Flash Rebirth yet, but I guarantee my favorite read of the week was Incredible Hulk #604. It’s so good to have an interesting to read Hulk book again. I’ve read that Loeb is going to be leaving his Hulk book somewhere around #20…. would you ever consider writing the book? I think a PAD and Pak writing duo could create a golden age of Hulk…. besides you’ve already kind of wrote an issue of it when you did the “What if General Ross became the Hulk” book. 🙂
I’m still waiting on the newest X-Force and Wolverine: Weapon X.
Just so you know, I’m looking forward to X-Factor #200 more than Christmas. I LOVE CHRISTMAS!!!! But X-factor #200 is gonna blow my mind like #50…maybe even more. Is that even possible? DARN YOU AND BLOWING MY MIND WITH SO MUCH GOOD READING!!!!!! *is tempted to re-read Wolverine: Election day*
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED —
The Brave and the Bold #29. Batman and Brother Power, the Geek. Older readers will ‘feel’ the story more than younger readers, but it will still appeal to most.
I got Mighty Avengers. It concluded the current arc, and it did not disappoint. As I said last month, it is a throwback to the original avengers. Yet it has some good twists. I can’t wait to see where it goes next.
