Back From Dragon*Con

Pat Henry and the crew from Dragon*Con provided the David family with their standard excellent treatment and support, and it was much appreciated.

We had a great time, meeting and greeting the fans, plus seeing old friends (the crew from “Babylon 5”) and encountering some new faces (Barry Bostwick, for instance, whom I’ve always wanted to meet. Dig up on Youtube his 1985 re-creation of Danny Zuko from “Grease” singing “Summer Nights.” He’s at least 20 years too old for the role at that point and he STILL buries Travolta.) High points included Kath and I meeting Terry Gilliam and Kath, Caroline and I meeting Patrick Stewart (who was charmed when Caroline was excited to meet the voice of Mr. Woolsworth from “Chicken Little.”)

Also gave the Julie Award to Leonard Nimoy, which was a personal thrill for me, and reformed MC-Squared with George Perez to host the Masquerade. So that was cool. To me, best costume was Samurai Jack and Aku, with the former played by a seven year old girl squaring off against her dad who was hidden inside an Aku puppet essentially that stretched fifteen feet high, making it the first properly proportioned SJ/Aku confrontation I’ve ever seen.

Plus of course I was on a variety of panels with such folks as Bob Greenberger, Keith DeCandido, Tim Zahn, and Peter S. Beagle. Always an interesting exchange of ideas.

Overall a great time.

  1. Glad you had fun!
Hope to be able to attend this some day.
This is a lean year for me. The only con I will get to this year is ARCHON is Collinsville, IL (St. Louis Area)

  2. I only wish I had a chance to stop by your table and say hello. Both times I went thru the art gallery (great lay out this year!), you had people lined up. The second time I got behind a person dragging a suitcase. As he was about to talk to you, he started unpacking his comic book collection for you to sign, I assume.

You and George did a great job at the Masquerade. My friends and I have started a tradition of ordering in food and watching from the room. The scary part was I was giving your punch lines seconds before you did. : ) So, is it a good thing I’m starting to think like PAD???

  3. I would absolutely love to meet Patrick Stewart. He played the principle antagonist of the piece in an admittedly small role in my all time-favourite TV series’: “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” and “Smiley’s People.”

    1. He even introduced the RHPS performance at Dragoncon. An entire Ballroom of people at 2:30 AM calling him a**hole and him loving it

  4. Dragon*Con was indeed a great time, and it was excellent to finally, properly meet you, however many years it’s been after that first time at I-Con in NY.

Only thing is, I couldn’t find you before we left, and I wanted to give you a copy of that one song, about “Soul Mates”. If you could e-mail me, I’ll send you a link for a download.

Naaaah. Too hammy and corny for my tastes. I’m not a fan of either Grease or Travolta, but “Summer Nights” in that movie is one of the all-time great musical numbers. That Bostwick version turns it into a lame joke. Is that really how he played it on Broadway? That’s yet more evidence that the movie is much better than the stage version.

  6. Mr. David,
Have you ever made to Toronto, Ontario for any Canadian conventions? I’ve followed your Star Trek and Hulk work for almost 20 years (how long ago was “Strike Zone” published??) and always keep my eyes open for appearances. Love to meet you in person someday.

You never saw me and Kim Kindya do that at the 2004 WorldCon (with help from Mary Aileen Buss). Won a few awards for the outfit.
