“Potato Moon,” Part 19 by Amanda Panda

potato_moonThey drove into the drive-thru. It took Woeisme hitting Edwood on the back of the head to get him to stop at the right section. He glanced at the menu, but it all seemed like meaningless gibberish to him. Just like the past few days. Just like all of his life, really, but he tried not to think about that. It was rather depressing and made him destroy furniture, and he knew how Bela hated to come back to a broken home.

“I’ll have a…a,” he floundered, aimlessly. Behind him, cars honked in impatience. Even their honking sounded like his beloved’s voice.

“French fries!” Woeisme snapped. “Smothered in ketchup, drizzled with salt-”

“I want a hamburger!” Something interjected.

“Check if they’ve got sweet and sour sauce, I love sweet and sour sauce…”

Sweet and sour sauce. How many times had Edwood tasted that most elegant of sauces on his dear Bela’s lips? Twice. Once, when he had failed to book a reservation for the fancy restaurant she had been dropping hints about for…for sometime, she claimed, and they’d ended up at a Chinese takeaway. And the second time…oh, the second time, when they had been getting intimate, and she had drawn out a deliciously naughty bottle of flavoured lubricant…

Wait. That hadn’t been sweet and sour, had it? It was labelled ‘Virgin Cherry’. But it had definitely tasted sour, as well as sweet. Edwood crinkled his perfect nose in confusion. Maybe Bela had just tasted sour that day. Why? What was she hiding? Was it all part of Quayle’s nefarious plot?

Oh, why did he blame Quayle! It was all his own fault! He could not even keep track of his darling Bela. He was a useless, subhuman, sparklingly stupid example of the follies of male existence –

A blow to the back of the head brought him back to reality.

“Fries,” Woeisme hissed. “Salt. Ketchup. Sweet and sour sauce if they have it.”

“Hamburger!” Something yelled.

“Lobster!” said Jakob.

“Lobster?” repeated Woeisme. “They don’t have lobster here-”

“Lobster!” Edwood shrieked. “That’s it! That’s what this is all about!” He put the pedal to the metal. The pieces were all coming together now…

  1. Lobster! I like this. Having had to gather orders while going through the drive through one too many times. I could sympathize with Edwood.

  2. Heh, yeah, that sweet and sour bit was nice. Poor Edwood, he spends so much time brooding that he never gets anything done.
