Stuff I’ve finished lately or am going to be working on

Just to keep you guys in the loop on upcoming projects.

I’ve written an episode for “Ben 10: Alien Force.” A few weeks ago they recorded the script; it’ll be on the air sometime next season. Entitled “In Charm’s Way,” it will be the first appearance of the villainess Charmcaster who hasn’t been seen since the original “Ben 10” series. I’ve also scripted a “Ben 10: Alien Force” manga for Del Rey entitled “Ben Folds Four.”

I’ve also turned in the manuscript for a new “But I Digress” collection that will be published this summer by Mad Norwegian Press, with cover by J.K. Woodward and intro by Harlan Ellison.

I’ve been asked to write more issues of “Wolverine: First Class” and I’ve just seen the first pages of an issue guest starring Thor. I’ve also turned in the first issue of a new limited series that’s going to be announced next weekend at the New York Comic Con.

  1. Sounds fun. I like Ben 10: Alien Force a lot more than the original series, so I’ll definitely catch your episode.

  2. Heh. I know basically zip about Ben 10, so I’ll have to look into that one.

I’m not a huge Wolverine fan, but a huge YIPPEE about the new BID collection — I’ve been hoping for one for a good long while.

And I await the announcement of the mini!

  3. Given Mad Norwegian’s history, are you entirely sure they meant summer of 2009?

I love their stuff (I stumbled across their ABOUT TIME series covering the original run of the Doctor Who TV show several years ago, and enjoyed the Buffy and Angel guides as well), but it does seem like it takes forever for things to come out.

Admittedly, they don’t generally promise anything until they’re actually ready to go, so I’m really not trying to knock them. They tend to have things I’d like to have the instant I hear about them, and waiting is hard.

  4. Peter, how does the Ben 10 manga fit in with you contract with Marvel? They didn’t grandfather that in, did they?

  5. If the mini involves either Wolfsbane, The Lady Liberators and/or the return of Eyescream I will be quite pleased.

  7. I have no idea what Ben 10 is.

And I wish I could say I’m willing to buy issues of Wolvie: First Class, but I’m not. Too Many Titles Syndrome. If the Previews are any indication, it’s going to be a mess when the movie comes out, as I think Wolverine will be in every title Marvel publishes that month. Or on the cover, at least.

New mini-series? I hope it’s more Star Trek, personally. 🙂

  8. Very cool. I’ve come to adore Wolverine First Class, and I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with the book.

  9. “Peter, how does the Ben 10 manga fit in with you contract with Marvel? They didn’t grandfather that in, did they?”

In practice, all ‘Marvel exclusive’ means is that a creator can’t work for DC. And it might only apply to DC’s superhero line, Jason Aaron still writes for Vertigo despite being Marvel exclusive, but that could be grandfathered in.

Nice. Just newer stuff or a range of columns spanning the entire life of BID?

I have no idea what Ben 10 is.

    Kid show.

  11. Can’t wait for the announcment of the mini.

Also, don’t know if you are aware, but in the newest Word Balloon interview with Bendis (The Bendis Tapes) he blatantly — and without warnings or not even discussing it — spoiled the newest X-Factor. The one that you urged people not to spoil on the recap page.
I’m not trying to stir up any trouble… but I think you need to smack him around a bit! :p

  12. Nice to see they’re going for the talent on Ben 10. I was worried they wouldn’t be addressing Hex and Charmcaster in light of the revelations on magic the show’s had.

  13. Landry Walker–

If you are Landry Quinn Walker, I just today read your one-page comic in Ersatz Peach, and enjoyed it very much.

    🙂

  14. Sweet! I found a copy of the old BID collection at a Big Apple Con a few years ago. It was even autographed.

Didn’t Harlan intro the old one as well?

  15. Also, don’t know if you are aware, but in the newest Word Balloon interview with Bendis (The Bendis Tapes) he blatantly — and without warnings or not even discussing it — spoiled the newest X-Factor.

Yeah. I’m not real happy about that.

  16. Thanks for the warning, Kirk. I read the trades, so I’m always behind and extra spoiler warnings are very appreciated.

  17. Sounds good! I can’t wait for the next BID collection (yes, I read them each month in CBG, but having them together, along with frequent comments after the columns, is nice). I would say Harlan Ellison contributed the intro to the last BID collection: It was his, but except for the first few sentences it had appeared before on the dangers of being a columnist.

Love the pun title for the Ben 10 magna!

  18. Peter,

I’m glad to hear about these new projects and I look forward to the mini-series and the BID collection. I’ll probably buy both. Could you give us an update on any upcoming projects for Star Trek: New Frontier and the Hidden Earth series?

    Thanks.

  19. I’ll absolutely be looking forward to the next collection of But I Digress! I’ll certainly check out the other items as well. 🙂

    Wildcat

  20. Will any of these be good?

Just kidding, couldn’t resist a “stupid fan question” 🙂

  21. I didn’t know you had written anything for Wolverine: First Class. I like your handling of that character. I’ll have to check that out.

Looking forward the new BiD collection as well.

  22. @Alan Coil

I am the same Landry Walker who did that one pager. I think in all the years, you are the first person to ever mention that bit of work. Thanks. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

  23. VERY happy about the new BID collection!

Special request for the Disney Villains Roundtable to be included in that one!

  24. Peter, am I to understand that you’ve already done previous work on Wolverine: First Class? If so, can you tell us which issues, so I can go and pick them up? Thanks.

Btw, how long will the Freedom Clock remain on the main page?

  25. Peter’s first issue of Wolverine: First Class (co-starring Kitty Pryde in all-ages appropriate adventures) comes out in March. He begins with issue 13.

  26. With the Alien Force episode, you’ll end up with 2 generations of Scullions really liking your work. Unless you scare him.

  27. Since i can’t comment in the SNL thread I thought I’d mention that they did Patterson again and if anything they were harsher on him

  28. You’ve done an Alien Force ep? And a Charmcaster one, at that? Awesome. It could only end up being more awesome if Alien X gets somehow erased from the Omnitrix and gets replaced in the 10 by someone Ben can actually use. [/fanboy]

At the very least, this should be the ep that puts humankind back in the magic business.

  29. Wolverine: First Class is considered “All ages.” Unfortunately far too many readers interpret that as “kids only,” just as a G-rated film is typically considered the province of children. Aside from avoiding profanity and excessive violence (and sex, obviously), I don’t approach W:FC as any different a writing assignment than anything else.

  30. Anything that reclaims G-rated or All Ages material from uninteresting, adult-unfriendly pablum is a good thing. I was going to say it was hard to imagine how comics could deal with violence in a non-adult manner, but it’s been no more than 25 years since that was the industry norm. All Ages material is very welcome so long as the other flavor survives.

  31. Thanks, Peter. I’ll be buying it. Btw, as I asked on the other thread, is the question of whether the one who slept with Theresa was Jamie or one of his dupes one of the things you said you’d address in upcoming issues of X-Factor? I’ve updated the Wikipedia entries on those two characters, and thought it relevant. If it’s a “just keeping reading” type of thing, then I’ll hold off.

  32. Just read your article about George Lucas, VERY GOOD! A thought that came to me while reading was, if the Jedi are genitic in nature and they frown on marriage and sex how do they evolve? Terrific article. Best wishes, Steven

  34. I haven’t been watching Alien Force because it’s lacked the original show’s (okay, not going for a pun here, I swear) charm (dammit) but I really will have to see this. Especially because, geez, didn’t they sort of retcon all the magic into being some sort of alien energy projection in a way that was really boring? Well, I’ll trust you to make it more palatable, like you did with that John Byrne story about Lockjaw.

But here’s something I’ve always wondered – when you write a script for a TV show, have you necessarily seen every episode of it? Some writers claim they do and some say nobody does, and I haven’t found out which is your take.

  35. In my case, I did indeed obtain every episode of the original “Ben 10” and saw as many episodes of “Ben 10: AF” as I was able to obtain.

    PAD

  36. That’s cool. For some reason, I think of Alien Force as considerably weaker (I’d like to know your thoughts, too), even though the original show had some dud episodes (the guy had water from the fountain of youth in his dunk tank… why again?).

But I know you don’t deal in plotholes. Well, not MUCH, anyway, and if you have them there’s usually something awesome hiding inside.

  37. Okay, fair enough. I’ve avoided Alien Force for much the same reason as Anonymous, but you writing an ep makes me interested enough to give it a chance.

And though I’d prefer a Ben 10 manga over an Alien Force manga, I’m willing to check that out too.

I’m avoiding Wolverine: First Class like the plague and will continue to, but I’ll lay odds on the mini-series being a Lady Liberators title. Or at least, that’s the hope. Still, whatever it is I’ll probably read it.

  38. No, Sage, he’s saying the manga IS original flavor Ben 10.

But why avoid Wolverine: First Class? I’m gonna admit to not having read it either, but it’s not because of some deep-seated objection to it.
