(giggling hysterically)
That is just bent. In the words of Hawkeye Pierce, we’ve gotta share this with the whole camp.

Not too shabby… if you overlook a couple of points:
1) McCain was one of the 27 Republican senators who TRIED to impose tighter regulations on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, but were stopped when the Democrats closed ranks and blocked the measure.
2) Using a teenager (especially a pregnant one) to make crass political points is exceptionally tacky.

McCain’ efforts came long after the damage was done, Jay. It’s good that he put forth the effort, no arguing that, but Fanny and Freddie were just a part of the problem (only %15 of the sub prime loans) and McCain didn’t do anything about them until 2006, which was much too late to have an affect. I’m not saying Obama did any better, but that particular point isn’t much of a win for McCain.
There’s also a problem with point number 2. Palin has drug her family to rally after rally after rally. That small baby of hers has been exposed to enough roaring crowds to give rock stars ear damage. Palin herself is crassly using her family to score political points.
Plus, her views affect pregnant teenagers, so it’s relevant.
Pretty good video. But what does McCain have to do with banking deregulation?

McCain sat in on the coercion of Keating’s regulator to lay off of him, leading to the ~$3 billion bailout of Keating’s lending institution, and McCain’s supposed public contrition. Then, up until lending institutions started failing in the last couple months, every sentence out of McCain’s mouth was a noun, a verb, and “deregulation.”

I thought McCain was the one who called for deregulation, and two democrats (Barney Frank and some other one I don’t remember) are accused of saying that there was no problem with the banks?
It’s a lot more complicated than that. Lots of people in the US government have been pushing deregulation for 20 years. There’s a lot of blame to go around. McCain wasn’t “the one”, but he was one of many who wanted to deregulate various industries.

You mean, say, like right-wing pundits would never do, write a column suggesting, say, that it would be a good thing to kill Chelsea Clinton, becuase she had “the taint” from her parents? Nobody would do that, would they? http://www.nationalreview.com/derbyshire/derbyshire021501.shtml – and this guy’s not even a US citizen, i believe.
Mike, that’s a pretty despicable column, but he doesn’t QUITE call for her killing. He cites other cultures that would, then condemns them, but yeah, I don’t like it one bit. I carried a grudge against Rush Limbaugh for HIS treatment of Chelsea Clinton for years. I have NO use for using the children of politicians to attack their parents UNLESS and UNTIL those children insert themselves into politics — like Chelsea did this year.
McCain did more to rein in Freddie/Fannie than Obama or Biden did, and was stopped by the unified efforts of the Democrats. And other Republicans tried to put some controls on the FM twins in 2003, and were stopped then, too.

Wasn’t there a story just a couple of weeks back about the tactics used by one group to keep Republicans from doing anything about Fannie and Freddie as well?

Craig, I don’t know of the specific article that you’re referring to, but Politifact.com has a detailed article on the subject.
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2008/sep/17/mccains-warning-fannie-and-freddie/
Their basic finding is: McCain spoke up after a widely read report drew attention to chicanery at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, but it’s a huge stretch to suggest he could have somehow averted the current crisis.
So he deserves some credit on the issue, but not a whole lot.
Obama has essentially been neutral since he came in after all the damage was done. He says he wrote a letter about Freddie and Fannie, but the letter wasn’t really about issues that lead to our current crisis, so I don’t give him much credit for that.

Ahh, here it is:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081020/ap_on_bi_ge/the_influence_game_housing
“Unknown to the senators, DCI was undermining support for the bill in a campaign targeting 17 Republican senators in 13 states, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press. The states and the senators targeted changed over time, but always stayed on the Republican side.”
Sounds like somebody had the opportunity to act, but fell to greed instead.
I’m curious — has anyone done a video of the “I am Spartacus” scene from (duh!) SPARTACUS, but with “I am Joe the Plumber” replacing the quote?

What total rubbish… and I can just imagine the attacks if Palin’s children were left behind in Alaska: “Look! She’s a lousy mother and she’s abandoned her children!”

Rich, when Palin was asked to drop the first puck at a hockey game, she knew she would get booed. So here’s how she decided to handle it:
But what I thought I’d do is I’d put Piper in a Flyers jersey, bring her out with me. How dare they boo Piper!

She used her own 8 year old kid as a hatred shield. That is definitely “crassly using her family to score political points.”
She’s not the only politician to do this. However, I’ve seen a lot more of her kids on the trail than any other politician. Plus, this is the woman who is proud that when her water broke at 4am, she didn’t go to the hospital for another 16 hours because she wanted to stick around for a political luncheon and then fly home.
