Convention highlights

1) Kathleen was in one piece: As anyone who’s read her blog knows, Kath was in an auto accident. Fortunately she’s fine, albeit a bit achy and bruised. Upon learning of the accident Friday, I immediately headed home, rendering me unavailable for the Marvel autograph session and also the Mondo Marvel panel. I left word at the Marvel booth, but somehow they didn’t get the message to panel moderator Jim McCann. On stage he noticed my absence and wondered aloud where I was. When one of the panels whispered in his ear what had happened, a startled Jim said “Oh my God!”…right into the open microphone, causing some degree of confusion and alarm for the audience which he quickly had to undo.
2) The Gordon Lee trial being dismissed: As reported elsewhere, the CBLDF announced on Friday that Gordon’s lengthy trial nightmare has been tossed.
3) “Tigerheart” presence: Between the 3-day passes with the book cover, the galleys giveaway, and the posters, Del Rey’s push for my Peter Pan pastiche was a thing of beauty.
4) Our seder: We had a nicely sized hotel room that enabled us to have some friends over to celebrate the first night of Passover.
5) Saturday evening: After the seder, Kath and I went party hopping. The Marvel party was incredibly well attended, although insanely cramped. We wound up at a bar hanging out with the Robot Chicken gang, with me playing ping pong against Seth Green. He won 21 to 14, but considering I haven’t picked up a ping pong paddle since my early 20s, that’s not bad.
6) Constant stream of fans: At my artists alley table, I had a constant stream of fans. In the words of Eeyore, thanks for noticing me.
7) Got some neat stuff.
8) Caroline sat at my table making countless drawings of the water horse from the film of the same name. She would announce that they were priced anywhere from “six bucks” to “twenty seven bucks.” Not that she knows denominations; people could give her a dollar and she’d be thrilled. She made over thirty dollars which she then spent at the Mattel booth on toys from the film “Cars.”

  1. Sounds like you had an awesome time, Kath’s accident notwithstanding. Glad to hear it.
And speaking of ping-pong: if Caroline is even remotely a fan of The Backyardigans, there’s a ping-pong centered episode called “Blazing Paddles”. Well worth a viewing or three.

  2. I am sorry to hear about Kathleen’s car accident, but am glad her injuries were limited to some bruises and aches.
I just got off the phone with Gordon Lee, who is about to go out for a well-deserved celebration. Words cannot express my elation at the outcome of his case. Beneath all of the legal issues and abstract principles (all of which are vitally important, mind you) was the story of a man whose freedom and livelihood were in jeopardy for no valid reason. I know from many conversations with Gordon that this was taking a heavy toll on him and his family, financially, emotionally, and spiritually.
I feel that my meager donations to the CBLDF were well-spent, and another donation is on its way. Because ultimately, trampling on freedom of speech causes human suffering — and standing up for that principle can relieve or even avoid that suffering.
Gordon, again, I am so very happy for you and your family. You may now get on with the rest of your life.

  3. Good to read that Kath is mostly a-ok. Having been crashed into once before myself I can relate to the after effects very well.
Good to read about the Gordon Lee case as well. Myres just let me know about it about 10 minutes ago. Now, pessimist that I am, I guess it’s time to start filling the coffers for the inevitable next dust up.

  4. Glad Kathleen is OK.
I’m also glad to hear the Gordon Lee case is now history. It’s about time the case was dismissed!

  5. Good news all around.
Caroline selling srtwork is too cute for words. Any chnace you could post one of her masterpieces?

Following in her big sister’s footsteps. I remember buying a drawing off of Ariel a few years back. I think it was “James Marsters’ Cat”

  7. Peter, thanks for signing my copy of Before Dishonor. I was pleasantly surprised to see Kathleen, Ariel and Caroline, who I had never seen before in person. Caroline was even more adorably curled up in your arms than in photos, and after a day of selling artwork (Hëll, I got 30 years on her, and I’ve never sold thirty dollars of sketches in a day!) No wonder she was fast asleep by the time I saw you, and it was extremely generous of you to continue signing books with your free hand.
I have a question, though, which I was going to ask on that Shana thread, but it seems pertinent here too: I remember Shana writing one of your But I Digress columns years ago when CBG was weekly. Has she continued to pursue writing professionally?

  8. Good to see you and the family at the Con. I think the whole thing went very well, especially compared to two years ago.
One observation that made me go hmmm. You could , in general, come by most creators at artist alley and stop and chat. Might be a few fans in front of you, but everyone was pretty accessible, even the “hot” artists.
Put the same creator at the Marvel or DC booth for a signing and there’s a long line of fans waiting for just a quick hello and autograph.Hmmm?
Signed, for this one time only,
    Brad Marshall 🙂

  9. Sorry to hear about Kath, glad she’s ok. Thank you again for the galley proof. It will pass the time on the commute into the city on the LI double ARRRRR ( who knew we had a pirate railway system?)
    – oh yeah, in addition to being an ex-NYRFie, I was also an intern in a 85/86 @ the House of M….heh forgot to mention that. Talking to you and Jim Steranko were my own highlights.

  10. I paid a handsome fee for Caroline’s picture and well worth it. I’m the one on Saturday that mentioned I have a Caroline myself who is 5 and will help to embellish the artwork of your daughter. Thank you again.
    Happy Passover

  11. Glad to hear Kathleen is OK. Between the four of us, my family have been in around ten car accidents, from rear-enders to a car-totaling adventure on a cloverleaf to trees collapsing on the front hood. They are Not Fun.

  12. So glad to hear that the Lee case has been dismissed. ‘Travesty’ isn’t enough of a word to describe it… made my fellow Georgians look like a pack of troglodytes. Not to say that some of them aren’t, but things like the Lee case don’t go far toward convincing the rest of the world that most of us have long since evolved the gills out of our necks and dropped the vestigial tail.

I too am thankful Kathleen is okay.

  20. Oh great g0d, Caroline sounds so cute. *I* certainly wasn’t that talented when I was five. My horses still look more like dogs.

  21. Speaking of the con, the report on the Tokyopop panel that just was put up today on Newsarama ( http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=154618 ) talks about their Star Trek projects.
    Peter gets mentioned in it:
They then showed a projection from Star Trek: The Next Generation. They’ve got a third “original series” Star Trek anthology in the works, and a Star Trek: The Next Generation anthology coming in either October or November. Tokyopop said that they’ve gotten some of the original Star Trek talents, and they have some Star Trek: The Next Generation writers working on this too.
An audience member asked if they thought they could get Peter David, but Diaz-Przybyl answered, “I honestly don’t know offhand. If we can we probably will.” She assured the fan that the editor in charge of the project “is actively pursuing writers like that.”
I’m sure many would like to see you get involved with this.

  22. “‘Travesty’ isn’t enough of a word to describe it… made my fellow Georgians look like a pack of troglodytes.”
That’s true — and unfortunate. I’ve been told that the Floyd County DA’s office has a reputation for prosecuting *everything* with the same zeal that a dog tears into fresh meat. I don’t think it’s fair to judge the whole city based on the actions of one overreacting parent and a dysfunctional DA.
