Had a good time at I-Con this year. How can you not when Harlan Ellison is in town?
Dire weather was predicted but fortunately held off, since I-Con (or, as I call it, Schlepcon) can be something of a drag in the rain. Held on the campus of Stony Brook University, you have to walk to various buildings for different panels, some of them practically on opposite sides of the campus.
Did a bunch of panels with such luminaries as Harlan, Bob Greenberger, Dwayne McDuffie, Murphy Anderson, Peter S. Beagle and Norman Spinrad. They were well attended and the fans were uniformly enthusiastic.

ZOMG I-CON LOVE!1!!!1!
*ducks tomatoes*
Sorry I missed it this year, but as finances are a bit tight with my unemployment something had to give… sounds like everyone had a great time!
Such a great time this year! (I will NOT use the word awesome) The first panel Friday night was the Harlan Ellison/Peter David Show. What a show they put on too. They told jokes for over an hour and by the end tears were rolling down my face. Afterwards they signed books and whatever anybody brought to be signed. I’m glad i brought my stuff for PAD to sign, everyone else brought stuff for Harlan to sign.
Coolest thing was, the person in front of me had the original copy of a manuscript that Harlan wrote over 50 years ago while stationed in Tennessee. That was the last time he had seen this story. He was actually speechless for about 5 minutes. Now THAT was something to see. I want to thank you guys, and Murphy, and Bob and everyone who made all the panels I went to an absolutely fantastic time, despite the long treks between buildings.
(Not asking for pity but I suffered a few injuries to my leg and back about a month before I-Con and was debating up til the night before wether to go or not. I’m glad I did.) Thank you again PAD and Co.
I spent a couple months at SUNY-SB one summer for a research apprenticeship thing…schlep is right. Especially in the summer, when most of the stuff on campus is shut down, including most of the bus service (at least, that was the case in 91). And the off-campus commercial strip is on the other side of the athletic fields.
If I hadn’t discovered the Forum in the basement of Central Hall, I’d have gone nuts (it was also a year before I had Usenet access, or even reliable email).
Sorry to go off thread, but has your webmaster changed something lately?
I wanted to read the comments for this topic, and got a strange little graphic around the link. Elsewhere there was a note that pop-ups are being blocked, and I have to hit control when I click the link. That works, although it throws everything into a new tab in IE.
Weird stuff.
Peter,
It was great seeing you again, and meeting you for the first time. I don’t know how you keep up with Harlan, but it makes for a wildly entertaining show.

I had a great time at I-CON. Catching PAD and Harlan Ellison was actually the last thing I went to during the convention, and as always they certainly came through with entertainment. (I hope Harlan Ellison’s vow that this will be his last I-CON ever is just his latest one that turns out not to be true.) I enjoyed most of the panels, ran the game THE GREAT SPACE RACE (lotsa fun) and my 2nd “Super(hero) S&M panel” (which, to quote ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, is exactly what it sounds like), and have 2.5 rolls of film of photos from the convention.
Ionically, the good weather wound up hurting me: Friday morning it was wet and rainy, so I bundled up, made sure everything was sealed in plastic… and wound up hauling everything a mile to the train station in a warm, sunny day. Still, it was t’riffic for the rest of the convention!
Hi all,
So, was there any mention of a release date for Dreams With Sharp Teeth? It’s a documentary about Harlan. All of the previews and word of mouth have made it seem awfully interesting.
With ghoulish delight,
Spooky Mizu
Peter,
I was glad to see that you stopped by the “True Tales From the Comic Book Industry Panel.” Your stories were very entertaining. Sorry you couldn’t stay for the whole thing.
And, if people would like to hear an extra-length review of I-Con by a panel of long-time I-Con veterans, including a member of the Board of Directors and an anime track actress, tune in or log on to “Destinies-The Voice of Science Fiction” on Friday at 11:30 PM on 90.1 FM, WUSB, Stony Brook, NY (netcasting at http://www.wusb.fm). After the show airs, it will be archived at http://www.captphilonline.com/Destinies.html.
Spooky-
They showed the film at ICON. Well worth the watch if you like Harlan Ellison.
Tonight (Tuesday) they have a showing at Lincoln Center in NYC. Unfortunately, I don’t have the flier with me at the moment, but you can probably contact the theater for more info.
Otherwise, I’ll see what info I have from the con when I get home.
Mr Ellison did mention that it was going to be released on DVD sometime later this year.
PAD wrote: Had a good time at I-Con this year. How can you not when Harlan Ellison is in town?
Very true. There is a distinct difference between going to a panel and going to a panel with Harlan Ellison or PAD participating.
I must admit that after a few days in Mr Ellison’s company, I find myself a bit feistier (for lack of a better word). This is not necessarily a bad thing. 🙂
The one good thing about “Schlepcon” is that I get my daily walk in without trying.
I’m just wondering how next years “Shuttlecon” will work. For those that don’t know, due to construction on the Stony Brook campus, ICON will temporarily be relocated to three – yes, three – separate areas, with “continuously running shuttles” between the locations. As much as I enjoy ICON, they usually drop a few balls – including losing movies and/or not having AV people show up in time. I cannot imagine depending on them for transportation.
Dreams With Sharp Teeth MIGHT repeat MIGHT be out on dvd this year. That is what is hoped for. Just a note to make sure nobody gets their hopes up too high for something that might still be a year away.
And I want it for Christmas this year! 😉
1If I may ask PAD, during one of the panels with Harlan and yourself, the famous debate between you and McFarlane was brought up. What was the word that Ellison had mentioned to you to use? I usually bring a notepad but didnt bring it this time.ggrr..
Rich, I think the word you are looking for is “paralogia”
Thats it! Thank you! Great word.
