I’m heading out to a book fair in–of all places–Deadwood, South Dakota (now I wish I watched the program). I’ll be out there with editor Andy Schmidt, pushing the notion of comic books as being something other than the province of children and forty-year-old virgins, although we will be doing a panel on comic books aimed at kids. .
I’ll be back Sunday afternoon.

Ian McShane is in it and you haven’t made a point of watching it?!?
We can never trust your judgement on anything again.
🙁
I’m taking a Teaching ESL course (English as a Second Language), and later today I’ll be giving a presentation on why comic books could be an educational tool for new learners. My fellow students feel that it’s a great idea, hopefully the teacher feels the same.
Hey Peter, when are you coming out to Minnesota again? We’ve got our big comic book convention in two weeks and it would be very cool to see you there.
Mr David,
Has anyone every pushed back on the “comics are just for kids” meme, by talking about the difference between the medium and the content? I’m sure you could get a bunch of nodding heads when you say that cartoons are for kids. Then mention, “yeah, my 4-year-old just Luvvvvs Sealab 2021 and The Family Guy.” I know it seems obvious, but it seems like an argument I don’t hear often.
Listen, when any c**ksucker walks into town thinking he can tell some local f**king cowsh*t what to read, he better bring some gifts like the for the local dignitaries, like he’s the Prince of f**king Arabia. Or else that c**ksucker might find himself sucking on a gun barrel instead of a c**k. Just a word of f**king warning.
Deadwood fans will get it:-)
*boggles* You don’t watch Deadwood??????
Seriously — best show on television. Better than Lost. Better than House (and that’s hard for me to say). Better than Battlestar Galactica. Better than Rome. Better than The Sopranos. Better than all of the CSI and Law and Order shows put together.
Get the first season on NetFlix or something. It’ll take an episode or two to get used to it — the cursing may seem overdone, but it really isn’t, and it’s part of the rhythm of language. Really, there hasn’t been a TV show this well written since NBC kicked Aaron Sorkin to the curb after the fourth season of The West Wing.

“Really, there hasn’t been a TV show this well written since NBC kicked Aaron Sorkin to the curb after the fourth season of The West Wing.”
Keith: How can you, author of the novelization of ‘Serenity’, say such blasphemy? ‘Firefly’, may it not rest in peace but instead arise from the ashes, has that honor (even though they sort of ran concurrently). And I’d have to say that the dialogue, particularly in the first five episodes or so of “Deadwood” is particularly forced. But that’s me.
Oh, and South Dakota kicks ášš just on general principles. Deadwood, Sturgis and Rapid City are fantastic (and Rapid City has a very good brewpub right off of 90).
Have fun in my home state! And watch out for the Jackalope!
Because Firefly wasn’t the best written show..or even close to it. If nothing else, it had the #$#@%@ train robbery episode…that alone keeps it as being “best written”.
Don’t confuse a good execution with a good idea. Firefly had one..but not always the other.
Nah, the “Train Robbery” was a forced episode. I don’t hold it against Whedon and Minear. And I still disagree. “Deadwood” is ok, but I have yet to be convinced it’s great. But I’m still trying. “Serenity: Part 1/2” is still the best two hours of TV I’ve ever seen. Even better than “Bakersfield P.D.” (why does Fox always kill the good ones?). That said, I don’t watch a helluva lot of TV.
Hm, I sometimes wondered if it is worth trying Deadwood but so far we haven`t done so either. I will keep it in mind for a rainy day when there is not much to watch.
We have just watched the start of Lost. Wow, we both loved it! The Emmy is definitely deserved.
Battlestar Galactica is great, too. I also find Stargate Atlantis very enjoyable. We still watch Stargate SG-1, too but more because of habit instead of enjoyment. I wasn`t a fan of Ben Browder in Farscape and don`t like him much there either. The new storyline bores both of us. At least Vala is gone for now which is at least something.
How about a 25 year old virgin with a Peter Pan complex?
Deadwood is no doubt the best show currently on television, followed closley by the Wire, Lost & the Shield.
On the Firefly/Deadwood/West Wing debate-
Sorkin’s last episode of West Wing was in spring of ’04.
Firefly aired in fall/winter of ’02, ergo any debate regarding the best written show since Sorkin’s departure on West Wing wouldn’t include Firefly
Seriously, rent season 1 of Deadwood. I bought it for my dad for Father’s Day (he’d been raving about it) and he immediately gave it back, forcing me to watch it all before he accepted it. It was worth it.
Deadwood is great television. I’m not sure it’s better than The Sopranos (it is often hard to remember how good The Sopranos are, seeing as they only have 13 episodes every three years or so) but its pretty dámņ good. I also set the TiVo for Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage and Rome, making me wonder why can’t other networks emulate HBO more. The production values are high, but these days, can’t you make it up on the back end with DVD sales?
Oh, and nice riff Ed.
