Slightly dodgy posting lately

We’re here at Crescent Con, where the hotel initially advertised cable access in the room. Technically, yes: As it turns out, about fifteen percent of the rooms. However, believe it or not, we can also get internet access if we sit with Kathleen’s computer in the hallway outside the room. For some reason the atrium serves as some sort of bizarre conduit for net access or something. So I’m sitting on the floor outside the room with the computer balanced on a chair.

Convention is going well so far. At their evening cabaret I took a whirl at their Karaoke, going with ‘Purple People Eater.” Unfortunately for some reason the words didn’t come up on the screen, and it’s been ages since I’ve done the song. So I did the best I could from memory, but totally went up on the last stanza (although, naturally, I remembered as soon as I got back to the hotel room.)

Haven’t seen a thing of New Orleans itself. Hoping to have a chance on Sunday, since Saturday’s booked. Wendy Pini had an adventure getting out here, missing her Thursday flight and then getting delayed today in Houston before finally staggering in. Poor Richard kept worrying about her, so it’s a relief she finally got here. Marv Wolfman’s here, so that’s cool. And Caroline, I’ve discovered, has increased in her running speed. She runs so fast that her hair literally blows back behind her. Her goal is to make it to an elevator and ditch us. I was charging after her at one point, sprinting across the hotel lobby, and I was carrying her pink security blanket. Remembering my “Peanuts,” I swing the thing like a whip and it snagged around her waist, stopping her cold, much to her surprise.

Attendance doesn’t seem to be huge, but we’ll see what happens Saturday.

  1. Reminds me of the hotel my wife and I stayed at on one vacation that advertised “data ports” in every room. Being somewhat immersed in the world of the technophile, we assumed it *must* mean ethernet access! It’s a good thing we brought the modem cable too, as it turned out that a “data port” was simply a modem port on the side of the phone so you wouldn’t need to unplug it from the wall.

On top of all that, the phone was next to the bed, not the desk, so if we wanted to get online, we had to set up the laptop on the bed.

(Then there was the 2-year-old list of dialup numbers, of which the nearest number was $1/minute from the hotel. Fortunately the first thing we did was check the current list of access numbers…)

  2. Glad to hear that things are going well (aside from the “outside in the hall” computer access part) and that people are arriving safely (if a bit late).

I wish I could have been there to hear your rendition of “Purple People Eater”. I dig karaoke.

Also, good to see a real world application of comics knowledge coming to your aid! Bravo for inspired thinking in using the security blanket.

  3. PAD,

With your obvious skill at handling the towel like a whip, perhaps they should hire you to get Harrison Ford back in shape for his bullwhip scenes in Indy 4!

  4. It sounds like your hotel has wireless internet, although you didn’t mention if you have a wireless card.

It also sounds like more hotels are going to wireless internet, but, if they’re anything like the Holiday Inn Select we stayed at in San Diego, they’re probably not prepared to hand out wireless cards for those expecting ethernet jacks. 🙁

  5. Since you are in New Orleans (a city WELL worth checking out), may I suggest going to Mike Anderson’s seafood in the Quarter and trying “alligator 7 ways..”

    Highly recommended.

  6. I was in New Orleans in January. Beautiful city. Be sure to check out the Ripley’s Museum in the French Quarter. Then you can get the kids all hopped up on sugary beignets at the Cafe du Monde just down the street. (Coffee to DIE for!)

So… Peter… are you ever going to sing karaoke at Farpoint or Shore Leave? Would certainly liven up the room. =)

  7. Should I ask how you determined that you can get net access in the hall outside your hotel room?

  8. Newsrama released an image from X-Factor from their Wizard World coverage.

Can’t say I really care for the art style.

But then, I don’t really buy comics to hang the inside pages on the wall. 🙂

  9. Nick-
I figured it out because there was wireless access in the lobby atrium which we can look into. The walls of this hotel were built back when they used plaster and wood to build the walls which is an effective barrier for signal. However if I go out to the hall which looks off the atrium I can pick up the signal.

  10. That X-Factor image looks great. Is Ryan Sook confirmed for the art chores on X-factor or just providing covers?

  11. There’s an article about the new X-Factor series over at Comixfan.

Hey PAD, who were the characters you wanted but couldn’t get?

  12. PAD (or any other helpful soul),

Apologies for the off-topic post, but has there been a PeterDavid.net blog topic covering Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince yet?

I just finished reading it and am curious about others’ thoughts and ideas about the book. Just to be clear, it’s not that I’m a slow reader, it’s that I was saving the book for a 12 and a half hour plane flight that ended up getting canceled (thankfully!).

  13. I hereby issue a challenge to PAD, The Silent Killer, to break his silence at the next Farpoint Vic’s Place karaoke. Should he do so, I will do my best to warble through New York, New York. He can even have his Pips on stage with him: Friedman, Greenberger & Weinstein…HEY!? Isn’t that a law firm? 🙂

  14. 1 I am glad that I was given the opportunity to meet you at CCC. I enjoyed our conversation about idiot savants. Hope you had fun!!!

What the hëll are you TALKING about? I’ve sung at Vic’s. I did “The Saga Begins” one year, and last year I did “Time Warp.”
