I’m here, I’m there, I’m everywhere

Well, this is getting interesting. Now that word about my HULK limited series–which, for all anyone knows, could turn into a regular gig if the sales are there–is out there, I’m suddenly getting interview requests from every direction. I’m not knocking it, you understand. It’s just that, with all the stuff I’ve done that’s new and different, the thing that’s getting everyone jazzed is me going back and doing what I’ve done before–X-Factor characters and the Hulk. But hey, I’m happy to keep doing the q and a’s…especially since I manage to discuss FALLEN ANGEL in every one.

  1. PAD,

I just read the interview over at Newsarama. I actually liked how you managed to answer several questions about the Hulk mini, with information about FALLEN ANGEL. Reminded me of certain folks running for high political office there. But in a good way, mind.

  2. PAD,

I believe you said somewhere that Fallen Angel is safe until #18. The Hulk mini comes out in January. Will DC be waiting to see if the Hulk readers spill over to Fallen Angel before they decide what to do with it?

    Jeff

  3. The scary thing is that they will probably start asking you about Fallen Angel about three years after its canceled.

And I too admit the weakness of being such a sniffling fanboy that the idea of you returning ot the Hulk almost gives me warm chills – I’d hate it if you were taken away from Fallen Angel, because that comic is too dang good to let go. We’ve already lost WildC.A.T.S. 3.0 and almost lost Runaways. If Fallen Angel and Gotham Central go that represents about the most outside the box and well written comics out today. By the way, Fallen Angel and Gotham Central are the only two book my wife will read, so if that goes I’ve got hëll in my household. I guess this means “This Time, It’s Personal.” (Been waiting years to find a way to use that line.)

  4. I know it must seem somewhat frustrating to be so remembered for things you have done in the past but I’m sure it’s obvious that every future PAD diehard fan has to start somewhere and there is always going to be that first love that even though there may have been many to follow none will ever shine as brightly in his/her eyes.
I know for me, it’s like all the time that you were not working on X-Factor and the Hulk those characters simply didn’t exist (or more like they just didn’t come around for a visit anymore) so when you go back to them it’s like we get to catch-up with some of our friends again.
I guess that kinda’ makes you like a go-between for us to our favorite characters…don’t worry, we love everything (some of us quite ravenously) but we just miss some of our old buds and can’t wait to find out what they’ve been up to!

  5. Personally I’ve never really read X-Facotr in the old days, mostly because I didn’t like the characters (sorry 🙂 ).
Although I did read a lot of the incredible Hulk issues when they were stilling being distributed (and translated) in dutch, but still during the gray Hulk days the comic was cancelled here, due to dutch people not liking the artist (yeah, we are a graphical folk 🙂 ).
The issues I did read however were quite good.

But only years later I started reading PAD again, this time Supergirl and although people seemed to hate the long storyline I loved it.
    Too bad she was cancelled…

These days I’m reading Fallen Angel and I have to agree it’s some of the best comics out there atm.
During the first few issues I hesitated on starting the series (tight budget), but eventually after all the good reviews I decided to give Fallen Angel a shot (I think it was during issue 7 I think) and haven’t had any regrets about it.
These days I still try to let my fellow online dutch comic contacts know about this book, but unfortunately not a lot of them actually try the series… 🙁
Therefore I can only be approving of PAD’s repeative actions to let people know of Fallen Angel.

    Back to Hulk.
I don’t know the artist and quite frankly I haven’t read any Hulk since the early 90’s, so I’m still uncertain if I should give this mini a shot…

  6. …in many instances, when a creator goes back to a character he was so well known for, they

  7. I have mixed feelings about creators returning to certain characters. If there are good stories left to tell ,and not just a return for sales and money’s stake ,im all for it.If clearly someone has worn out their welcome with the characters or bringing said creator back would not advance the characters i am against it.While i dont know the exact circumstances for the end of PAD on the Hulk i felt like i was left in the middle of a movie wondering what happened.
For me Claremont was past the point of needing to move on when he left the Xmen and i have no real desire to see what he doing with the characters.Which is another issue ,he may be doing good stuff with the Xmen but i have such a bad taste in my mouth from his last run that i dont care to even give it try this time.(Captain Britain characters back already,i see by the covers)
I really enjoy certain peoples ‘ work but i have to have some interest in the characters too.
I love Rucka’s Atticus Kodiak novels ,and his run on Batman.Im so so on his version of Wonder Woman. Its not bad but it could use some punch to it and I have never been a big Superman fan so i havent read his work on the big guy.
From what i hear Peter’s work on Supergirl was great but i just never warmed up to that character.(Sorry)Richard Dragon,Green Arrow, are on my list cause i like the characters.I wanted to like Doom Patrol(Byrne version) and Suicide Squad(Giffen) but neither really work(ed) for me.
I will try out Madrox, and the Hulk mini cause of the writer and hope to enjoy it.Really hope these series help build the fan base for Fallen Angel

  8. I am really looking forward to Pad returning to Hulk. Let me go on record as saying his return will herald a phase in the Hulk

  9. Well, as a past CM and current FA reader, I’m really looking forward to your Hulk mini. I missed out on your 12(?)year run and I’m interested to see what you can to with the big, green guy.

Keep talking about FA. Hopefuly everyone will hear about it, and if anything, fans wont have an excuse for missing out on it.

  10. Well PAD, maybe it’s because this really SHOULD be interesting.

I dropped Claremont’s X-Men 2 issues in (thought it was drekk). I stuck with Starlin’s Thanos because I’m a real sucker for big T, but I really did get the feeling cosmic Jim was either uninterested, past his prime, off his game or all of the above – and meanwhile Giffen’s arc kicked ášš all over the place. I lost interest in Byrne/Claremont’s JLA midway through issue 1.
I can’t think of any other recent ‘big returns’, so if there were any that I’ve read, it only shows how impressive I thought they were.

Meanwhile, you were JUST NOW responsible for 60 straight issues of one of my top five books in the last years (CM), and Fallen Angel is a terrific read – so not to dis your legendary Hulk run or whatever, I think you are NOW a writer at the top of his game; and those other ‘returns to big easy’ type things turn out to be by people PAST theirs.

So yeah, I definitely AM looking forward to your run on the Hulk. Why should anyone NOT be?

  11. Oh, and Lester, I hardly think this is an either/or situation.

I really loved Bruce Jones’ run on the title. It was a mix of contemporary and classical, suspenseful and entertaining, new and familiar. Everything you want out of a Marvel comic. I felt Hulk was better than it has been for years with this writer, the art was tremendous, and I couldn’t wait for the next issue.

And now I’m looking forward for PAD to come in and do and even better job!

  12. This is going to sound like heresy, but I never read a single issue of Mr. David’s heavily-admired “Hulk” series. I was a fan of his “Supergirl” and his “Excalibur” novels. These days, despite my early misgivings, I’m a fan of “Fallen Angel.”

The thing is, perhaps people are either remembering how good Mr. D’s “Hulk” was…or they’ve been dissatisfied with what’s been done with the Hulk by many of the people since then.

(I don’t remember a similar reaction when the suicidal Steve Gerber announced his six-issue “Howard the Duck” special.)

By the way, I’ve just got power on since Hurricane Charley came through my neighborhood – a hurricane I actually DROVE through. I’ve made it through the rain (although the contents of my fridge didn’t) and I’m pretty much in love with the whole freaking world right now. So I can’t even think badly right now about anyone, even those guys who took away Mr. David’s original “Hulk” gig. Just give me a few days, though…

  13. Glad to see you working your HULK mojo again, PAD–even if I wasn’t one of your staunchest supporters back in the day, it’s clear you know the character better than virtually anyone around these days and are the best choice among those who have written him. (And yes, I’ve been picking up FA the whole time, and plan to start MADROX as soon as it’s available.)

Of course, it’ll also be great to see you reunited with your JUSTICE co-conspirator, Lee Weeks!:-) (Who’d know about JUSTICE? Yup….I’m HIM, PAD…the one guy at cons and elsewhere who gives a fig about John Tensen;-)

Uhm….anyways, I’ll be on board for the duration of HULK: TEMPEST FUGIT, of course, hoping for more to come.

    Best,

    ~Gary

  14. Great concept Peter:

I love the Tempest concept. Hopefully the 2 individuals the Banner/Hulk are fighting to protect will be Betty/Rick or Rick/Marlo. It would be nice to see familiar faces and Bruce would fight harder to protect loved ones than total strangers.

Either way I am sure the 6 issue series is going to be gold. And I have read all of your works. Even the Popeye comic and especially Fallen Angel.

    Keep up the great work.

    Regards:
    Warren S. Jones III

  15. PAD–

Out of wicked curiosity (and to settle a bet–don’t ask!), who’s going to be editing TEMPEST FUGIT? Axel Alonso, or someone else?

    ~Gary

  16. I intend to pick up the mini series when it comes out (and the “What if?”, too. I enjoyed PAD’s run on “Hulk” and it’ll be interesting to see what he has to say about the character these days.

I would’ve picked up “The End”, but never saw it in my store.

Speaking of the Hulk, I never understood how people decided the merged Hulk was called

  17. Well, your return to the Hulk holds a special meaning for me, PAD; you were the one writing the book when I first began my own comic collection. I had read a lot of the Tales to Astonish issues and the other early appearances of the Hulk in Avengers and Fantastic Four chronicled by Stan Lee when I was very young (my Dad had bought them when he was a kid. He still owned them when I was born, and often read them to me as bedtime stories). The Hulk instantly became my favorite comic book character of all time.

Once I was old enough to start my own collection, I bought my first Hulk issue. It was #365, part two of the “Countdown” storyline. I’ve followed your Hulk run every step of the way since then, buying the back-issues whenever I could. Thanks to your efforts, I continued to enjoy the book for many years to come. In a sense, I grew up with the Hulk. As he continued to change and to grow as a person, so did I. I found that I identified a lot with his outsider status in the Marvel Universe, even among other super-powered beings like the Avengers and the FF. Whenever things got me down, it was always nice to escape into the Hulk’s world for a while and see what he was up to.

Ah yes, those were good times. And I’m more than grateful that I now have an opportunity to experience some more; it’ll take me back to my childhood. Thank you, PAD. 😀

Yea but did you read the thing. It was awful.

  19. Just read the article, man am I excited. PAD the way you talk about the Hulk just seems right. It’s like you have a real connection to the character. It was meant to be…

  20. All you have left to do now is Aquaman and you’ll have the trifecta. And I just heard Will Pfeifer is leaving the book.
