For one brief, shining moment…

…I respected the hell out of George W. Bush.

Really. No kidding. When he stated in an interview “I don’t think we can win” the war on terror, I was staggered. Because he was right, and because he was honest, and because he was making a reasoned evaluation of something that anyone with two licks of sense could have told him.

The “let’s declare war on something” mentality reduces complex issues to stark black and white terms that can’t begin to encompass the reality of the situation. And when Bush fessed up that the war on terror was, in essence, no more “winnable” than the war on drugs or the war on poverty, I thought, Wow. Okay. Maybe he’s really learning. Maybe he really is capable of growth in a way that his fixed “stay the course” mentality would make you think he’s not.

And the Democrats went to town comparing terrorism to the Soviet Union which, by the way, self-destructed, and the fall of Communism which, last I checked, is still around. And I thought, “That’s just stupid. This is another of those embarrassed-to-be-a-Democrat moments. How can they pounce on him when he’s so indisputably RIGHT?”

So what happened? Bush flip flopped. Suddenly the war on terrorism IS winnable, yes siree, don’t you believe anything else.

Oh well. Back to status quo.

Humor “What If”

I, along with a lot of other folks, have been approached about doing contributions to a humor “What If…?” I’m pleased to say that Bendis liked one of my suggestions…which I figure doesn’t guarantee anything, but hey, it was nice to be thought of.

I won’t tell you the ones I know for a fact they’re already doing or the one of mine that he liked. Sadly, he passed on the one that was my favorite: “What if Black Bolt Had Turretts Syndrome?” Admittedly it was a long shot since it’s pretty…oh, what’s the word? Tasteless. Yeah, that’s it. It’s pretty tasteless, and insensitive, and probably wouldn’t have flown with upper management anyway. But just imagine the possibilities…

Protestors: Just What the GOP ordered

If I’m the GOP and I’m seeing all the over-the-top plans for protestors, I’d be salivating. I’d be saying, “Bring it on.”

I am VERY concerned over this orgy of protesting. I’m not entirely sure of the purpose of it. It comes across to me as massively self-indulgent in that not only will it accomplish nothing in terms of affecting the opinions of Bush and Company, but it may well swing undecided voters to the Bush camp. Why? Because Americans lean toward underdogs, and as protestors do everything they can to make the lives of the GOP delegates as miserable as possible, all they’re gonna do is make the GOP come across as sympathetic. “Those poor Republicans, can’t even have their convention without demented naked Kerry supporters trying to hog the spotlight.”

It’s bad enough with these garbage Swiftboat commercials (although if Kerry expected anything else, he was being naive. The GOP successfulyly painted John McCain, a POW, as “loony,” and Max Cleland, who lost two legs and an arm to a war, as being soft on American security issues, so Kerry thought…what? They wouldn’t pull the same crap on him?) eroding Kerry’s numbers. But Kerry’s own supporters may be the GOP’s best friends.

Assorted Hulk stuff

Tom Brevoort sent me a photocopy of the Lee Weeks cover for the first issue of “Tempest Fugit.” I have to say, it looks absolutely kick-butt. My understanding is that it’s going to appear in an upcoming issue of “Wizard,” along with an interview with me about “Hulk.” Should be interesting since it’s the first time in quite a while that Wizard has spoken to me extensively about, well, anything. In any event, at some point in the future when we have a fully colored version, I’ll post it here.

Also, C.B. and the Marvel editors have approved my script for “What If General Ross Had Become the Hulk?” Here’s the summary that I wrote up for the solicits (I don’t know that this is what it will say word for word, but it was my description.)

“Meet again, for the first time, General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross…a veteran army officer who believes that the time for talk is long past, and all that matters is his country’s ability to develop weapons that will annihilate its enemies. Experience with him what happens when he himself becomes the mightiest weapon on two legs…but is trapped within that weapon, unable to communicate with former allies who only want to destroy him.”

Lynch Mob

I have been informed by Tim Lynch that he has been absent from here recently since he has been wholly involved with the arrival of his daughter this past Friday at 5:49 PM, weighing in at 6 lbs 11 ounces and measuring 19.5 inches.

And I’m pleased to announce that, in a show of solidarity, the child has been named “Fallen Angel Lynch.”

Win Tom Galloway’s Money – Possible categories

Peterdavid.net frequenter Tom Galloway is gonna be doing “Win Tom Galloway’s Money, modelled after Comedy Central’s Win Ben
Stein’s Money,” at the World Science Fiction Convention (Noreascon), on Thursday September 3rd at 10:00 p.m. Other board regular and second-coming of me, Keith DeCandido, is going to be the Jimmy Kimmel sidekick. Tom was looking for possible categories that would be punned riffs off some aspect of sf, fantasy, or comics, such as authors, artists, actors, characters, or editors in the fields, titles of books, movies, tv shows, comics, etc,or general concepts such as robots, spaceships, mythical creatures, etc.

Below are the categories I suggested. If you bright guys have any others, feel free to suggest them.

Remember billjemas.com?

Ages ago, around the time of U-Decide, Glenn pointed out to me that Bill Jemas had, shockingly, not locked up www.billjemas.com. “Ohhh, Glenn, get it for me, would’ja?” I asked. And Glenn did. And after having some giggles at Bill’s expense, I publicly stated that if he wanted to take it off our hands, we wouldn’t cybersquat on it. Never heard from him.

Until recently.

So just to let you guys know, with any luck www.billjemas.com will be undergoing new management and will be the launchpoint for…well, for whatever Bill Jemas is going to do next.

Brian’s response and my response to Brian’s response

Brian Hibbs replied to my commentary here…

http://www.comixexperience.com/savblog/savblog.html

…so you can go check it out there ’cause I’m not going to reprint the entirety of someone’s blog entry since–y’know–one really shouldn’t do that.

And fortunately enough, I don’t feel like I’m in a pissing match with Brian, because ultimately we’re after the same thing: To sell comics. But he makes a couple of points worth addressing specifically…

To my friends at ComiXfan Forums

…a comics related website where they’ve set up a nice page for me and everything…guys…I’m just about ready to give up. Lately, every time–EVERY time–I try to read or participate, I get slammed with “The Server is too busy. Try again later.” Entire posts of mine have been blown into oblivion by that message. I dunno what goes on there, but it would be nice if somebody fixed it.

In case I ever wondered…

We live in confusing times from a sexual preference point of view. I mean, here you’ve got the Governor of NJ who’s been married twice and has two daughters…and then comes to the conclusion he’s gay. Which worried me because, hey, I’m twice married and I’ve got four daughters, so maybe I’m twice as gay and just don’t know it.

Well, thanks to the Olympics, I’ve discovered something that has proven to me, conclusively, where my preferences lie.

Women’s Beach Volleyball.

I could watch that for hours. I dunno what the hell this thing is doing in the Olympics, and I absolutely couldn’t care less. Although when you think about it, and how scantily clad the participants are, it comes the closest to the original spirit of the Olympics considering that the participants used to compete in the nude.

Hunh. I wonder what the ratings would be like if they reinstituted that rule.

So she’s not in Rome anymore…?

Tom Galloway pointed out this item from the Boston Herald:

“A Paris Street man was out strolling with his dog in Thursday night’s gentle rain when a woman appeared from the gloom with the unorthodox pickup line, “I am Buffy the Vampire Slayer!”
To prove her point, she threatened him with a 12-inch wooden stake. She missed her mark, prompting the would-be blood donor’s faithful hound to give chase. The dog didn’t get to sink its teeth in and police could not locate the witchy woman, which is probably one collar they and the brave pooch could do without.”

This is an example of lousy reportage. First, calling her a “witchy woman” is silly since Willow was the witch. And second, it should be clear that it wasn’t REALLY Buffy for the obvious reason that, if it were, the guy would–well–be dead. Tragically, a call to Wolfram and Hart could have clarified the situation, but with Angel no longer connected to them, they might not have been forthcoming.

Stan Lee’s latest cameo

What’s that, you say? When asked what’s the most recent sequel film that Stan the Man appears in, you say “Spider-Man 2?”

More fool you.

Stan told me about it at San Diego, but said he wasn’t sure it was going to be in the final print. So I didn’t want to say anything until I saw it myself. But yes, by gosh, folks who sit through “Princess Diaries 2″ and actually remain conscious until the last twenty minutes will see Stan himself trading bon mots with Julie Andrews. His character makes a ham-handed, strangely accented pass at Andrews’ queenly character, punctuated by loud “Whoop whoop whoop” noises. The flummoxed Andrews is informed by the young woman accompanying Stan, “Please excuse my Uncle. He learned all his English from watching Three Stooges movies.”

Personally, I think the film needed much more Stan. But Ariel liked it, as did the movie audience which was almost entirely little girls and their moms, so I hardly think I was the target audience.

Nyuk nyuk nyuk.

Cross your fingers…

We’re allowing people to post comments without registering with TypeKey, thanks to the hard work of Jay Allen and MT-Blacklist.

Here’s hoping it works. If it does, we can go back to the way it was, where everybody was posting with wild abandon and flamewars started daily and bandwidth was being consumed at an ungodly rate…

…uh, Peter, are we sure we want to do this again?

Saw it coming, but not quite

Well, I predicted months ago that Bush would announce a troop pullout right around the time of the GOP national convention to try and take the sting out of the situation in Iraq. What I didn’t see coming was that he would pull them out of places where people weren’t shooting at them.

The statement he gave was, “Our service members will have more time on the home front, and more predictability and fewer moves over a career.” Now I’ve got no problem with this. Pulling troops out from Cold War posts when the Cold War has thawed is a sensible, reasonable thing to do.

The question left open is, is he going to milk the “Our boys are coming home” cow for the convention and then keep them home once they’re here (a process that will take a year or two)? Or, once re-elected, is he looking to turn around and ship them off to Iraq? Is it short-term popularity gain, long-term planning to replace dying Americans…or neither? Or both?
