THIS YEAR’S PRO-AM

Ariel and I will be rolling in the PBA Pro-Am this year, being held at the AMF Lanes in Babylon, Long Island. We’ll be on the same squad (hopefully) at 3:30 PM on Sunday, November 23, and I’ll also be rolling on my own in the 7:30 squad that same day. So c’mon out, say hi. Heck, if you bowl and there’s still room on the squads we’re on, join in.

  1. May we presume you’ll be staking out Lane 5, PAD?

    J.

(Who’s just NOW getting why McHenry was getting deja vu near the end of “Double Or Nothing…” have you NO shame at all?)

  2. Good luck.

I doubt anybody would want me and my lifetime bowling average of about 65 to fill out those squads, however fun it might be.

The squads are put together randomly; the total squad wood doesn’t factor in. It’s every man for himself. Besides, it’s 9 pin no tap, meaning 9 pins down on the first ball counts as a strike, so that evens the odds a bit.

Besides, if you go there and you suck, it gives comfort to the other guys on the squad who all think, “Jeez, at least I’m not as bad as *that* guy.”

  4. Just out of curiosity, is the game going to be telecast? Before the advent of ABC’s “Wide World of Sports,” Sunday TV used to be filled with bowling shows. And, at least in my youth, the winner was almost always a beefy guy named Ðìçk Weber. (The sport used to be the Midwest’s version of a British fox hunt; you can drink booze and bring women with you during the sport.)

  5. The Pro-Am will not be telecast, no. However, the Pro-Am is the event that precedes the actual Pro bowling tournament, with the finals on ESPN Sunday at 1 PM EST. We (being Ariel, Kathleen and myself) will be attending that. Theoretically we’ll actually be in camera range. Perhaps we’ll all be wearing our “Pirates of the Caribbean” shirts or something equally identifiable.

  6. Aaa! You mean I’ll actually have to stay on ESPN after Sunday NFL Countdown [by far the best NFL pre-game show in existence, BTW, to those who care about the NFL ;)] and watch the bowling they’re always obligated to mention is on next?

    (Seriously – have fun!)
