Issue 14 was awesome. Even with his cosmic awareness, Marv has no idea what is in his future, and he’s actually afraid of it. Good take on the old question, “If you could change one thing about your past, would you?” I can’t wait to read how this will affect Marv’s beloved insanity!

Best issue so far, if only cause we got that “middle” Marv to see. Even with just his few lines, I immediately was reminded of why I loved that version….Can we have him back now? :)…or at least a Marvel Knights spin off featuring Marlo, Moondragon, Lorainne…
Dear Peter,
I really enjoyed this issue. It made me wonder what I would say to younger versions of myself. The teenage versions of Rick and Marv were stupid (like all of us were as teenagers) and inexperienced, but the present Rick and Marv are experienced but still seem stupid at times. I really loved the middle versions of Rick and Marv. They still have the ability to see the good in everything. For every bad comment “Present” Rick made “Bucky” Rick had something good to say. It is almost like “Bucky” Rick & “Captain” Marv have a stronger character than their future selves. I’m only 22, is this what is to come for me? I really hope Rick and Marv learn from their past. I hope Rick stops seeing all the bad things that have happened because of him and starts seeing all the good he’s done. I hope Marv stops hiding behind his “insanity,” and faces his fears. I hope they both learn to become heroes again.

Great issue, Peter. Nice to see the “real” Captain Marvel costume. I’m not a fan of the Kree outfit. Hëll, I’m not a fan of any Alex Ross designs to tell you the truth.
I enjoyed the way you foreshadowed change. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
Please, please, please keep on having complete in one issue stories. At 3 bucks a pop I wan’t a whole story.
PS. BRING BACK MARLO!!
I thought the latest issue was okay, but nothing special (sorry).
ps – I support bringing back Marlo as well (as well as the old tone of the book)!
I liked the issue but the art doesn’t really do much for me. I had thought that the new style was something that Ivan Reis was doing but now Michael Ryan is the artist and it looks almost exactly the same. I think that it’s the “painted” coloring that’s turning me off. I guess I just prefer something a bit more traditional.

When is “Marvel the Titan” going to go searching for the Puel 36 Space Modulator? I can hardly take him in that silly costume, please change it back. The day glow coloring is really bad in this book makes everything look like a cartoon, the pencils need to be inked. As for the story, I hope it’s an indication that Marvel will be un-insane soon, the insane Marvel is wearing waaay thin.

Now that Thunderbolts is over, will we see Marv’s relationship with Songbird, or whatever that characters name is, that was hinted at in the previous Captain Marvel Series?
Dear PAD and Co,
This series is steadily climbing back the ranks towards becoming my favorite monthly title again. I loved the last series, which was a Peter David’s fan wet dream: Hulk, Spider-Man 2099, Rick and Marlo. I don’t think I ever laughed so much as I did during the Grendal scene in the “evil comics shop.”
When the series relaunched without Lorriane, Moondragon, and Marlo, I felt a bit sad. Captain Marvel was still excellent, but it just wasn’t the same to me. But as this “insanity” arc builds towards a climax, I find myself enjoying the series, almost despite myself. I was glad to see Genis’s old look and attitude, and the stuff with the Rick Jones was brilliant.
I can’t wait to see what’s next for Genis and Rick!

Well Peter, I loved the time travel theme of Captain Marvel #14, but if Genis is that powerful and insane why would he have fear at all?
Isn’t insanity the absence of all rational thought.
I loved the sidebar of Ben Grimm playing poker with his past and future selves. I wish you could have had a quick hulk/maestro panel for the sake of nostalgia.
All in all I would like to see more of Rick and either a resolution with the Marlo issue or introduce a new love interest.

I thought a neat sidebar – like the Thing’s – would have been to see Captain America talking to himself before taking the Super Soldier serum and then with his triangular shield before losing Bucky…

So, my favorite bit of this month’s installment was “Why would I cut my hair short?”

This issue was the first Captain Marvel comic I’ve picked up in some time. Looks like I’ll be buying issue #15 next month.
Now that Thunderbolts is over, will we see Marv’s relationship with Songbird, or whatever that characters name is, that was hinted at in the previous Captain Marvel Series?
Actually, I think that was hinted at in the Avengers Forever limited series, not any previous Captain Marvel series. Of course, that series also portrayed Songbird as a *member* of the Avengers.
The last few issues have been real interesting, and Marv is slowly but surely climbing back up the list of my favourite comics. The hints of what is to come are pretty cool, and it was amusing to see Rick in his Bucky outfit, acting completely sane, whilst wearing something that only a crazy person would wear.
These self-contained issues have been much more enjoyable, despite not having the payoff that the multi-part stories did.
But I’m definitely looking forward to future issues, wherever they end up going.

Just some responses to other people’s points:
Actually the old Captain Marvel series did touch on the Songbird future during a story where Genis was jumping backwards through time. Excellent issue, BTW.
And I still think Genis just isn’t as crazy as he is trying get to everyone to believe. As was hinted at here, he’s hiding from his future…I said last month thought I thought he was hiding from his responsibilities.
After a very good (albeit unnecessary) relaunch, I quickly lost interest in this book, so I gave up on it after Coven. But I floipped through this issue in the store yesterday, and although I put it back, I’m probably going to end up picking it up next week.
And I’d also like to add that I’m all for a big supporting cast. To me, I think that’s always been part of the charm of Spidey.
Rob R.
Alright. After voicing my opinion last month regarding my dismay at the direction of the series since it was rebooted, I figure it’s only fair to respond that this issue went a long way towards pulling me back in to the book which was skidding towards my drop list. It was good to see some hope that what has gone on during the “insanity arc” won’t continue as an indefinate meandering status quo.
More of stuff like this, please.
On the costume issue,
Personally I think there’s a reason for this.
Why?
Because I read the ads… and there’s going to be a whole Kree storyline coming up.
Plus, Peter has always been one to plan ahead. The details have always been important. Yes, jokes are on the fly, but what more can I say than I think he’s a heck of a plotter and a great storyteller. So no great reason for it, but I do think there is a methodist behind the madness. Um, make that method behind the madness and the costume.
This is what Marvel needed, by the way. A hero that actually sees the end, and therefore has full justification to his means.
Between this, Supreme Power, 1602 and Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel has my money.

Boy, did this issue make me miss “heroic Marv”. “New Marv” may have blasted him to smithereens, but heroic Marv “won”. Which brings to mind a question: is New Marv actually more powerful than his previous incarnation, or would it be a fair fight?
I loved it. My favourite bit – The Thing. Here we have a situation in which everyone is SUPPOSED to be reflecting on their lives, deciding if they’ve made the right choices… and here we have The Thing playing poker with the other Grimms.
Excellent.
“Actually, I think that was hinted at in the Avengers Forever limited series, not any previous Captain Marvel series. Of course, that series also portrayed Songbird as a *member* of the Avengers.”
It also portrayed Captain MArvel as an Avenger who was “in space towing the corpse of Eon out of the solar system.”
Dear Peter,
Nice work on the past few issues. I’ve been enjoying the series for the past 50 issues and i’m sure i’ll enjoy them for however long they continue. Anyway, I loved the balance protrayed between the “innocent” “experianced” and “regretful” aspects of all the characters shown. While we’ll always have our “regrets” about what we did in our lives, our “experiance” always lets us learn from them. Plus, it was nice to see the young and younger Marvs and Ricks as well. I especially loved the line on the hero’s journey. That is one of the ideas i’ve loved about these characters and this book from the start; they change and grow with each new adventure. Its interesting as well that Marv is actually afraid of what is coming next. I wonder how Rick will react to this. Well I’ll stop my rambling now… nice work everybody!

Dear PAD
Ok this issue was great. It made me feel like the wait for what is going to happen with Marv’s insanity was really worth waiting for. I really found it interesting that it was the “middle” Marv and Rick that made the most sense. It was like it was during that period of there lives they were more optemistic about the future and could see the faults in their old selves and future selves. Even though the future selves were more experienced in the world it shows that they were not the wisest of the three selves shown. Anyways I liked this issue and it was the best one in quite a while which is saying a lot seeing they have been all good.

#14 was great all around. I really liked the similarities between the versions of Marv’s and Rick’s alternate selfs, combined with the difference in how the latest version ultimately dealt with the other two. Although, to be honest, after the shot of the three Ben Grimms, I was hoping for another full of the dozens and dozens of versions it would take to get all of Wolverine’s past selves out in the open.

Dear Peter:
Not exactly sure where you’re headed with the overall storyline yet, but am enjoying the ride so far.
Meanwhile, while a somewhat lighter approach would be the logical next step story wise after everything that has happened, I would not recommend going as far as the original thirty-six issues.
Hopefully you will find a ‘fair and balanced’ medium between the two.
But like everyone else, I would like to know what’s been going on with Marlo and Moondragon too. It’s been so long since her last appearance, are Marlo and Rick even still married?
Sincerely,

A good ish, but one which raised a very important question, one I believe may well cast a great deal of light on the direction in which the book has been going:
“That’ll be twenty-five cents”?!?
Great issue. Seeing the contrast between crazy Marv and hero Marv was interesting to say the least. Reading the transition month by month I think I’d forgotten just how noble and heroic he used to be (and hopefully will be again).
It was also nice to see Rick getting his cynicism chipped at by his younger self.
Great. Just great.

Oh God. I’m typing up the review for this on my CBR Forums thread, and as I typed in the title, it hit me. I know exactly what Peter’s doing.
For the love of God, please let me be wrong.
Regardless, I’m looking forward to next issue, even is the title is “Squish.”

Man, i think i know too…
Let’s see… “slacker” genis had his own series, “hero” genis had his own series, now “crazy” genis has HIS own series…
A trilogy of sorts, don’t you think??? And the way things are going… it’s gonna end bad…

Well, let’s find out. Tell me the title for the next issue. If you do, you’re the first to tumble to it.

Wouldn’t happen to be “Squish”, would it?
Aaaaaaanyway…
As I got halfway through this issue, I said to myself: “I get it. I get the whole insanity story and what it’s building up to. This is the most brilliant super hero story in years.”
Then I got to the END of the issue, and realized that what I thought was happening now couldn’t happen.
Which makes me happy, because now I’ve got a fantastic idea in my back pocket which has never been done before. 🙂 So PAD, thank you for the great issue and the only-slightly purloined idea.

If ever there was a doubt to continue reading Captain Marvel, this issue was a pleasant cold shower followed by jubilant slap in the face.
What I love about Captain Marvel is the depth with which philosophical ideas on the human condition are discussed. Oh, and there’s some cool action now and then too, but I’m in it for the depth. Too many comics these days are all about the next big shock or the newest storyarc or the reinterpretation of so-and-so character. But Captain Marvel accomplished all this and more every issue without stopping to jump up and down and yell “Look at me! Aren’t I cool now?”
Pony-tail Marv, clueless Marv, or psycho Marv, I’m in for the long haul. Keep it up.

I’d just like to congradulate PAD on fifty great issues of Captain Marvel. Thanks to Peter, the Captain is no longer a ridiculous pony-tailed party animal, or a two dimensional cardboard cut-out version of his father. And in case you forgot how it used to be, this issue reminds you in a most entertaining fashion. I haven’t enjoyed Captain marvel so much since Jim Starlin was writing it.
dAN
Yeah, the next issue is indeed titled “Squish.”
PAD
Mr. Peter David,
I like your work since the Spectacular Spider-Man. I’d never thought but I liked the Hulk eventually when you wrote (all the way) and I love Captain Marvel.
But the mad Genis…
I miss Marlo, Rick and Lorraine… and your excellent humor (I have until CM #12 so far, I live in Europe, Hungary).
Anyway, I wish you happy days and everything.
Thanks for the Captain Marvel. Excellent comicbook.
I always trust PAD to pull a serious out of what seems like the doldrums.
Fact is, I’m really tired of Marv the Crazed God. I can’t point to any particular issue or issues I’d get rid of — they’ve all been good in and of themselves — but it feels like we’ve been slogging along through this arc forever, and given that it’s not a terribly pleasant arc, that’s about twice as long as it should have gone.
And yet, whenver I’m getting tired of something PAD is doing, he inevitably blindsides me with something that makes my head ring (Spyboy 13.3 comes to mind).
So I’ll remain faithfully patient. I don’t expect Marlo or Moondragon back, alas (going back over old ground rarely works, even if the suits would allow it), but I expect to be whapped upside the head Real Soon Now. And I expect to love every minute of it.

Whats with the revolving door artists? I was so happy that Ivan Reis was working on the book….then they took him off. I didn’t think anybody could compare to Ivan and then you give me Michael Ryan who was equally amazing….then they took him off the book too. Please find a way to keep one of these guys. I think their versions of the character have been the best yet.I’m really enjoying the series and it gets better with every issue. Please find a way to fit Mar-Vell into future stories [living or dead]and by the way i really like the “painted” look on this book
Man, my store didn’t have it. I missed it. Aggghhhh, don’t move the dang football, Lucy.
Sorry.
Anyway, I look forward to it. Glad to hear the book is working, and that the members of the old CM team are still chugging along. Just learned CrissCross is gonna be on Firestorm with Jolley. Love his art, ain’t lookin’ forward to the “new direction” for the character. Glad to hear that Peter is Still Clickin’.
Wow! It was incredible. Issue 14 got me re-energized. The Coven storyline was good, but not great. Maybe it’s because I never really read Hulk during your run. I did learn quick though. To be honest, I loved Genis in his somewhat naive nature. The insane Genis is really powerful. No two ways to dispute that. Which is good because I’ve always felt Marvel should be a powerhouse in the MU. I just wish it didn’t cost his sanity in the process. Who knows, perhaps once Genis learns from this experience he can retain that knowledge and still be as powerful.
This issue really made me realize how much I miss the Old Marv. His comments on his Heroes Journey was great. It really made me remember why I love this character so much. I’m probably so excited on the mere notion that change is on the horizon. For better or for worse. I’m just praying for better.
Scott
Reading this issue, as another said, reminded me how much I miss the Cap you were writing when the title began. BRING HIM BACK!
