I suppose, now that it’s hit the web (after all, Mark Evanier talks about it here) that we can let the cat out of the bag.
The film version of CODENAME: COURAGE will be out July 4, 2004, lord willing and the creek don’t rise. The beginning of the promotional site is up here, I assume it will get better as it gets closer to release. Here’s hoping this film is closer to Peter’s version of his comic than Hulk was.
Don Swan’s documentary about the process of this thing going from comic book to movie has also generated some interest, and may be distributed by Miramax. Peter does show up in the documentary, and details on that can be found here.

Given that the market research company I work for handles a lot of work for Miramax, let’s hope they do pick it up, and we end up screening it. I’d love to see a movie based on a Peter David comic book months in advance. 🙂
July 4, 2004? Isn’t that when “Hellboy” is coming out? You might wanna change that because, sorry, I’m going to “Hellboy”. 😉
Now we just have to wait for “Sentry: The Movie”. I hope Hollywood doesn’t foul up that classic Stan Lee creation.
But with “Bluntman and Chronic” coming out later that month, aren’t they flooding the market with comic based movies?
I can’t believe I missed listing this on the PAD Bibliography. It’s an oversight I will rectify immediately.
Corey 😉
Why should Hulk been “closer to Peter’s vision”? Sure, Peter contributed a lot to the Hulk myth, but it’s not “his” comic. I think the first Hulk movie had to simple and not go headfirst into PAD’s elaborations. Maybe in the sequel.
As for this new movie: congrats!

More importantly, that’s when Spider-Man 2 is coming out. I think I’ll be at Spidey.

I agree that the first Hulk flick shouldn’t have necessarily featured the grey or Merged Hulks, but I do think that there was at least some inspiration from PAD’s stuff in the script. For example, I’d think it would be likely that all the Greco-Roman myth stuff that was going on may have been at least partially inspired by The Pantheon stories. I also think Banner’s attitude in the movie (he was able to admit “I like it,”) was much closer to Peter David’s Banner (and I suspect that’s the real reason Byrne had such a big problem with that line).
As for Commander Courage, can anyone supply a description of this series? I’d never heard of it. Judging by PAD’s usual style, I’m guessing it was satirical?
Commander Courage wasn’t so much satirical as simply homage to a classic character. The post 9/11 revamp, Codename: Courage, had a lot of subtle satire to it, which was mostly missed by people in the wake of the tragedy.
Unfortunately, that includes Commander Courage uber-fan Donald Swan, whose review of the book can be found at http://www.onceuponadime.com/reviews/codenamecouragereview.htm
I’ve also written a fanfic, the beginning of which is posted, on the same site.

Peter’s in that hack Swann’s documentary too? Geez, is there anyone Swann didn’t sweet-talk into appearing in the thing?
Here’s hoping that it just goes straight to DVD.
TWL 🙂
I have no Idea what Codename: Courage is…somebody wanna fill me in?
You’ll be wanting to check out the Mark Evanier link up above, Wolfe
Ok, I’m a bit perplexed…I didn’t get CC when it came out as it wasn’t the kind of book I was wanting at the time..but is PAD responsible for the bášŧárdìzáŧìøìņ of Commander Courage?
I mean, I don’t see any hooks on his hand or long hair or anything…
Though if he’s responsibile with getting Donna D’errico into the Liberty Lass costume, my hat’s off to him….now he can get her out of the costume, heh heh….
Okay, color me confused, but exactly when did this comic come out, or have I completely had a brain fart here and missed this one. I have never even heard of this property before.
Just when I thought I had gotten my hunt for PAD material down to a manageable size.
People say I’m trapped in the goodie goodie golden age but I had problems with PAD’s changes to the Courage character from Commander to Codename. Not just the obvious stuff (from patriotic do-gooder to grim guerilla) but also that it seemed less inventive than the changes to Arthur Curry or Dr. Banner. I think PAD’s shift was a bit too heavily indebted to Gerry Conway’s Punisher (no skull emblem though).
