I never liked this concept in the first place, of course I don’t care much for X-static anyway. I’m glad Marvel changed it’s mind about this. Social commentary or not this whole thing just seemed disrespectful.
well, after the ‘Diana: the People’s Princess’ comic put out by Topps, how could Marvel have possibly done a better job? 🙂
(and if nobody out there remembers this, count yourselves lucky!)
And yet Bill Jemas will still be acting as if he has the biggest balls in the world. If Milligan had tried this at Crisis or 2000AD, no one would’ve cared, except to laugh.
I mean, how could it possibly be more offensive than the Weekly World News anyway?
With Elvis look alikes jumping out of airplanes in Las Vegas and cross dressing Marylin Monroes all over, how could this have been any more offensive?
So the royal family didn’t like it, who cares? She isn’t my queen and I don’t pay her any of my taxes(those go towards whacky liberal spending).
You know that has to be the reason Marvel changed their minds. I seriously doubt Marvel would worry about bad press or else why do they make half the choices they do?
The whole Princess Diana thing =
Worst Idea Ever.
Hello – as a brit mind if I put in my tuppen’orth ?
I loved the idea – one of the central themes to X-Statix has been the manufacturing and manipulation of iconography. Now, Diana was a woman who certainly manupulated her own iconography when she was alive – often for worthy causes such as banning land mines and AIDs charities admittedly, but also on occasion for her own agrandisement.
The idea of a comic incorporating her is ironic given that this very week her own trust has had to suspend operations whilst it sorts out a very nasty fracas with the Frankiln Mint. Diana has become a commodity in her own right.
Nor is it the first time she has appeared in a comic – some years ago a spin off comic entitled ‘ Night of The Living Dead – London ‘ was produced , 2 issues in that mini-graphic novel format that used to be so prevalent, and the portrait of a thinly-disguised royal family, including the Princess, was probably less flattering than Pete Milligan would have done. Or you might check out Steve Bell’s If… strips.
I’m not even sure if it is disrespectful – we do not know what they were going to do with her. Had she – the character in the comic – for example, continued to speak out against land mines and AIDs then her characterisation would have been in keeping with the real Diana and thus may even have been respectful to her.
On the other hand, had she embarked on a torid lesbian love affair with Venus De Milo – then they would very definitely have been disrespectful.
As it is, we may never know… pity
If any of these ever saw print they would be extreemly collectable now and in years to come. Perhaps there are scripts floating around…
I find it hard to believe that this whole thing was ever anything more than a Marvel ploy to draw attention to the book.
In fact, how do we know that Marvel had planned this in the first place? All I’ve ever seen is one image…easy enough to produce and a lot more cost effective than scrapping a completed comic. Looks fishy to me…like Jemas decided to stir up some controversy for its own sake.
This story was rummored for awhile before the news broke. I am pretty sure they had the issues done. Not that I put it past marvel to do something like that. But I don’t see Milliagan and Allard being a part of something like that.
Actually, 2000 AD already had a go at Princess Di, only she was still alive then. A 1993 episode of Big Dave written by Grant Morrison and Mark Millar had Di and Fergie replacing the royal family with robots. It ended with Dave having a threesome with those scheming trollops.

I notice that the other comic companies (I’m thinking DC and CrossGen, but even Image probably qualifies) haven’t tried any one-upmanship on this line. Like, I’d expect Image to jump on the comic book adaptation of the independent film “Jesus Christ, Vampire Slayer,” but so far no bite.
Peter Milligan is one of those authors I Just Don’t Get. His X-Force just seemed rather pointless. No fun at all.
Sort of like Mark Millar, who writes the most un-fun comics I’ve read in the last five years.
