NU?SARAMA

In case anyone is wondering what in hëll goes on with Newsarama lately–some stories can’t be read, and no response posts can be made–I asked Matt Brady about it and he said:

“We’re changing over to a better bulletin board system today, and will be moving to a new server tomorrow or the next day, but as of now, you can still read most of the articles on the front page – you just can’t post. The traffic just showed us where the weak spot was in regards to what our BB system could do, and the server we were on.”

So now you know.

  1. Off Topic

    From Cinescape:

Next week I’ll cover some DC characters who could use a fresh look, but if I’ve missed out on any Marvel heroes you feel need the treatment, write me! In addition to that, I’d also like your help on a future project. After THE HULK comes out, I’m going to do a two-part column on the best and worst movie adaptations of comic books (which one THE HULK will ultimately fit into is up to the filmmakers, obviously). I want to include your views on the subject, so mail your votes for best and worst movie adaptations of comic books, along with the reasons why, to me at feedback@cinescape.com. Should be fun!

Since the same topic got so much response here, I thought everyone might be intresed in giving their opinoins and insights again to a diffrent source.

  2. The new server’s still wonky. I posted once and then couldn’t get on again. The column widths are erratic (the constant sidebar ad doesn’t make things any easier) and you can embed URLs in your sig but the italics and boldfaced type don’t work correctly. However, it looks like it’ll be very nice when they finish working it out. The server change needed to be done, there’s no doubt about it; even before the Waid/Jemas news hit getting onto Newsarama was spotty at best.

  3. I really feel for them. Running my own Comic News & Reviews site at Comics -N- Such and running my own programming business I’m well aware of system and bandwidth issues. It can be very difficult to deal with increasing viewership and overhead issues on an older server. Of course moving to newer hardware isn’t much fun either. Feel for them guys!

  4. I agree Anthony.. same situation here.. I’ve been asking them repeatedly to switch from the CGI routines which have a ton of memory overload issues..

Here’s to hoping they try something PHP or ASP based..

  5. They seem to have switched to a vBulletin (like X-Fan) board system. That PHP/ASP-based?

  6. At least the Pulse is still working okay (also- movie poop shoot- Newsramma’s host- has been gooffy for a few days too. Must be related to the newsramma problems I am thinking)

  7. 72 hours and Newsramma is still down. Those 6 people Joe Q say are upset about the story must be still bringing it down with all of their traffic.

  8. Yeah vBulletin is php based.. nice to see they finally listened to the suggestion..

Hey Matt, if you’re interested, I’ve got a lot of comic themes for vBulletin when I was running the program if you’re interested.

As for those “6” people.. why not tell them to sign the petition if their movement is so large. What wonked the servers is crossposting the link EVERYWHERE and people repeatedly going back over and over.

    It’s not 6 people, but it’s not 60,000 either..
