Some folks got annoyed when I posited a scenario which had Gore as President and Congress not only not letting him attack Iraq, but going into month eighteen of an investigation trying to prove 9/11 was his fault.
Well, here’s one that’s even more annoying.
Considering Congress spent eight years investigating virtually every business tie the Clintons had, and delving into everything from Whitewater to travel bureaus to Clinton’s sex life…
Let’s say that Gore HAD been given the okay to attack Iraq. If that attack resulted in lucrative clean-up contracts for businesses that either had been major contributors to Gore’s campaign, or that Joe Lieberman had previously been involved with…
Am I the only one who thinks you could clock with an egg-timer how long it would take for a full-scale investigation to be put into motion?

Look, I’m a Democrat, but I supported the war. Even my wife does. So did The New Republic. I’m not a Republican supporter, but I don’t let my opinions regarding which party I vote for in the elections influence my opinions on how to fight crime worldwide. Trust me everyone, in order to solve our problems in this world, we shouldn’t base our feelings on it according to our political opinions.
If we are going to be playing “What if?”, I think if Clinton were a Republican president dealing with a Democratic congress he would have been forced out over the FBI files. I don’t consider it beyond the realm of possibility that he would have been impeached over sexual harrassment. Remember the Democrats investigating the claim by a Carter aide that George H.W. Bush had delayed the release of American hostages in Iran until after the 1980 election?
You can believe that there were all of the investigations of Clinton because the Republicans were trying to harm his presidency, or because Clinton really was a sleazeball. In my opinion the first point is arguable but the second point really is not. He really was a sleazeball.
Liberals like to talk about Republican’s “big business” ties, but I think government officials should have private sector experience so they can have some idea how the economy works. In any case, I don’t see how electing someone who spent his or her entire adult life in the pursuit of political power is preferable. John Kerry has made a career over seeking public approval and marrying wealthy women. Does *that* make him qualified to be President?
Oh yes, and heaven forbid that we have people in office that have actually had real jobs running businesses, instead of people that, for the last 20 years or so, have made their job begging people for money to run for re-election.
Oh yes. And Heaven forbid we have someone in charge of an economy who has never gone hungry, never had to work at a minimum wage job. Good thing that the corporations are in charge of politics, because we sure can’t afford it out of our pocket… which we end up doing anyway.

Speak for yourself. You may be one of the fat and lazy slob Amercians you speak about, but don’t condemn the rest of us responsible productive Americans for being like you.
Mr David,
While I have the utmost respect for your work and I really do enjoy reading just about everything you write, we do disagree on politics. I was just wondering though, why do you think that most people that are in the arts (such as writing, acting, and such) are liberals? I’m sure there probably isnt a concrete answer but I was wondering what your opinion on it is.
I got burned out shortly into this discussion. I mean, we all know what opinions are like, because everyone’s got one (not bellybuttons, but not too far off anatomically)- and everyone else’s stinks. Why can’t anyone just say that the scenario posited doesn’t work- not because the Al Gore unit is not President- but because if he WAS President he wouldn’t have the stones to attack Iraq or Afganistan anyway. More likely he’d go after Haitti and Rhode Island.
By the way, Mr. D. Loved the HULK book. Hard to believe the movie will be as good. I haven’t kept up with you in a while. I was sorry to hear about your wife’s passing. All my best.
