RANDOM THOUGHT ABOUT “ANGEL”

Y’know, I was thinking about Jasmine’s true name, and something occurred to me.

She’s incredibly, incredibly ancient. She’s female (at least in aspect). She cavorts with demons and is worshipped by them. She’s apparently some sort of succubus, draining the life from people.

Wouldn’t it be interesting if her true name was “Lilith?”

I’m probably wrong. I usually am about these things. The last time I was right about anything was back in September when I figured it was the First, and since then I’ve missed on everything. Guess we’ll find out tonight.

Hey, if nothing else, if it does turn out to be Lilith, then people can accuse me of ripping off Joss Whedon again a year ago when Lilith was the villainess in “Supergirl.”

  1. Makes sense to me, which also probably means it’s not correct.

Separate subject: What about Smallville? Filler episode (like next weeks looks to be), or did some things actually happen (i.e. Chloe and the potential “Daily Planet” column)?

Question: How did those guys “inhale” melted (molten) Kryptonite? You would think the first time they tried it and burned their internal organs away that they would have given up. How did they find out that Kryptonite gave them super strength anyway? And when did Kryptonite develop this effect?

  2. I have to admit- this season of angle has been a hoot. And it sounds like they are going to do an “ALIAS” after this season and turn things around a bit after this season (assuming there is a next season). Tim Minier was quoted on zap2it a couple of days ago saying that the season ending cliffhanger is really a cliffhanger. Rather they looked at it as a pilot for next season.

Things that make you go hmmmmmmm.

  3. I doubt you theory, Peter, only because the Buffy-verse has been notably light on using actual mythologies/demons/etc. They seem much more content to make up their own stuff (I believe Joss Whedon has even gone on record as saying such), since you then don’t have to worry about messing with pre-existing stories.

  4. I think it woould be cool if the Lilith angle was true. It would be welcome to have the identity of the creature have some sort of resonance outside of the buffyverse.

However, it all needs to tie back to Cordelia and Connor somehow… I strenuously hope that they aren’t just pawns to get Jasmine born. Maybe Jasmine is a corruption of Cordelia’s “goodness”? OK, that is a stretch.

I really disliked Stu’s summary that all of the evenmts of the last few years were to bring about this event… that sort of takes the glow off of the decisions that everyone made.

With the season five “reboot” I certainly hope that the series returns with Wesley!

I hope, strenuously, that Connor’s dad-issues get resolved somewhat permanently. I would like to see Connor as more or a team character, the angst-boy has been milked dry. If he isn’t killed off maybe he and Dawn can hook up when she moves to LA to live with her father…

What do you think the possibilities are of Angel finding his “shansu” (or whatever that was called) and becoming human in the season finale?

I have read a rumor that Angel is in the Buffy season finale:

Unfortunately, Cordelia can’t be dead/absorbed … not enough airplay for a “founding” character…. we had to feel the pain of a whole episode (and a couple of weeks of references) for the departure of the insufferable Doyle. Maybe all of the consumed folk return when her name is said…

Jasmine certainly is an uberbitch but nowhere near the caliber and fun of Glory. Isn’t her mouth disturbingly large? Too much smiling, I guess.

Firefly was a promising show, they shouldn’t have pulled the plug so quickly…it took X-Files a season or two to survive on a Friday night.

Speaking of (or in the neighborhood of) Angel speaking Jasmine’s real name:

How does he talk? He couldn’t give mouth to mouth to someone (Gunn?) once because of “no breath”… does he just pass air over his vocal cords to speak? If so, he should give mouth-to-mouth BETTER than others… no oxygen would be diverted by his lungs. Is vamp blood black or red? Red would obviously mean some sort of oxygen present.

  5. Well, if Jasmine’s next step toward world domination is to start a traveling music festival featuring an all-female lineup of pop, rock, and folk artists, then we’ll know she’s Lilith for sure.

  6. This isn’t a spoiler: Lilith was the villain in an original Angel novel called VENGEANCE, by Scott Ciencin and Dan Jolley. The authors, if they’re watching season four, are probably feeling fairly prescient.

  7. You know I did have that thought a while ago, probably thanks to her appearance in Supergirl. But if it is her what was she doing hanging out on the planet of the bug people? And what someone in the hotel watches a re-run of Cheers? Does she lose all power?

  8. Paul: Lilith was Adam’s first wife.

The second wife had no name and was destroyed soon after creation, Eve was the third wife.

William: Kryptonite on Smallville just does weird things to people…and yes, the fumes from molten rock should scalled lungs..unless they’re SUPER LUNGS!!!!

The Chloe/Linoel stuff would be interesting if the show had any kind of week to week continuity–This week, Lana will never speak to Clark again..next week, she forgets she said that…last week Chloe is over Clark, this week she isn’t, next week..she is…

    sigh.

  9. More about Smallville (I’ll stop commenting on the subject here just as soon as Peter makes a blog entry for the episode):

Wasn’t Clark a little reckless (I mean more than usual) with the whole revealing of his powers to other people, especially other people who want to, and tried, to hurt him?

    A. All three of the bad guys know what he can do,

    B. They all survived (a novel approach), and/but

    C. They aren’t talking.

    I don’t understand….

  10. Scavenger: The Chloe/Linoel stuff would be interesting if the show had any kind of week to week continuity–This week, Lana will never speak to Clark again..next week, she forgets she said that…last week Chloe is over Clark, this week she isn’t, next week..she is…

    sigh.

Scavenger, have you been to high school recently? What you just described there was the majority of my HS experience…

  11. The Chloe/Linoel stuff would be interesting

Wouldn’t Lionel and Chloe getting together be, um, like, illegal? How old Chloe on the show?? 16…17 tops. If that is what you meant…I guess there is no limit to the Luthers…

Oh – William – I posted a comment to your comment about hitting the back button after you preview screen and losing the information. Wasn’t sure you saw it because how long that thread was. I just said that I have been copying my comments before the preview page so if I hit back and it is gone, I just simpley paste it back. Hope that helps…

  12. I still think Jasmine is Yog-Sogoth, Cuthulu, or any of the other great devourers from Lovecraft fame… when I first saw the tentacled thing that was my first thought, then spider-demon-boy called her something to that order…

    She’s an Old One.

I think Lilith is a bit too much…

But I’ve been off on everything these days, including the NCAA Final Four…

  13. Xyon,

Yes I did see your note about the “back” button, and I even emailed you a thank-you (from your website Contact Me page, since that is the only place I could find an email address for you) but I guess you never got it. My email here at work is at best an iffy proposition. Thanks again.

  14. Sorry about sending an off-topic response…

Mr David, have you seen X-Men 2? I’m probably been quite subjective, but I personally think it is one or the best comic book adaptacion that I’ve seen to the big screen… What are your thoughts on the movie?

    Thank you.

  15. I doubt you theory, Peter, only because the Buffy-verse has been notably light on using actual mythologies/demons/etc.

Well, they did make use of the Loa. Although, granted, instead of voodoo gods, the loa was a talking cheeseburger, but still…

  16. Existing mythology was also tapped when Willow invoked (summoned?) Osiris when Tara was killed.

Don’t know enough about Hecate and Wicca to comment about that usage. Although BUFFY’s take on Wicca seems to be a very loose adaptation of the real thing from what I understand of it.

  17. The last time I was right about anything was back in September

Why do I have the feeling Kath is in the background going “It’s been longer than that”? 🙂

  18. Was watching Buffy on FX today. Buffy had a neat quote to Xander, “Didn’t your mother tell you its all fun and games until someone loses an eye?”

Judging from the past few episodes, I’d have to agree.. fun and games are over.

  19. Speaking of stealing ideas, I know some people who think Joss Whedon is stealing ideas from anime. They drew up all kinds of similarities. It was all very impressive. Just one problem: Joss Whedon doesn’t *watch* anime. But why should we believe him? A writer’s job is to make stuff up, right? Why should we trust one of *them*?

There’s no such thing as a “new” idea. People shouldn’t let similarities affect their enjoyment of a story. I don’t hear people accusing Neil Gaiman’s early work on Sandman as being an awful lot like Alan Moore’s work on Swamp Thing.

My favorite quote from Sandman will always be that line from “The Hunt.”

“Never trust the storyteller; only trust the story.”

You can’t steal ideas. Ideas are free. Unless someone says you’ve stolen an idea and sues you. Then they cost a pretty penny.

  20. Umn, my ancient India mythology is a bit weak, but what about Shiva? Perhaps some other “devourer”? in that very ancient vein?

Well, for one thing, according to Hindu mythology, Shiva is male.

  21. Isn’t Shiva called “the Destroyer?” At least that is what the Remo Williams/Destroyer novels say.

  22. About Joss stealing from anime, well… Devil Hunter Yohko is a series about a teenaged girl who is the latest in a long line of Devil Hunters, destined warriors who fight demons, vampires, and all the dark things that are in the night.

It predates Buffy. Now, I’ll agree that Joss isn’t stealing from it, but it is odd, don’tcha think?

  23. I don’t think I saw the issue of Supergirl you speak of, but wow! This helps to point out how many comics writers can turn to various movies and TV programs they’ve seen to look for ideas and inspirations for what they’re writing in comics…and to bring forward even better results, I kid you not. Keep up the good work in the future too.

  24. Rachel might you be thinking of Kali?

And plus like Lilith PAD used her as a villianess (Young Justice 8-10)

  25. Actually, she only appeared in issue ten (and even then she wasn’t really involved)
