I don’t normally do two blog entries in one day, but I gotta share this one:
I’ve been informed by my editor on SUPERGIRL, Lysa Hawkins (who is also my editor on “The Fallen Angel”) that “Many Happy Returns”…SUPERGIRL #75-80…has performed so well that it’s going to be collected as a trade paperback when the run ends. So the first eight issues and the last six are collected. Interesting bookends.
PAD

“SUPERGIRL #75-80…has performed so well…” …that the series is being cancelled!
It’s a mad, mad world.
I have every issue of Supergirl except for the quickly sold out #76. The trade is probably the only way I’ll get to read that story. It is frustrating that momentum has obviously built on the title and it is “impossible” to keep it in publication. And DC isn’t even angry at you. Oh, well.-JimO
Crazy thought, but… if this TPB did well enough… might your Supergirl come back after a brief hiatus?
You realise of course that this is going to have Leonard spitting feathers don’t you. 😉
So let me guess this straight…sales are high enough to justify trading the storyline, but not keeping the book afloat…my head hurts…
Well, congratulations, I guess. I hope this news takes a bit of the edge off of having the book cancelled on you.
Today Supergirl, tomorrow Atlantis Chronicles, right?
(In a more cynical observation, I note that this announcement comes almost moments after final orders were due for Supergirl #80, almost as if the PTB had already decided to issue a TPB collection, but held back the announcement lest the news of an imminent collection drive down the orders for the final chapter.)
Congratulations again!
This doesn’t make much sense. Why do they collect comics that perform well? Wouldn’t it make more sense to collect the ones that don’t sell all that well. After all, pretty much everyone has already read the top selling books. That’s how they got to be top sellers in the first place.
I actually got into Supergirl pretty late, so I’m going to have to find that first TPB so I can read it.
Yay! This IS good news for Supergirl!
Although I also find myself echoing some of Matt Adler’s thoughts regarding the cancellation of the current monthly. I figured that DC had planned to do it anyway, so they could help raise Supergirl’s ‘profile’ by sticking her into Superman’s books for awhile (hence the sudden creation of this “Cir-El” character). So….after a brief ‘hiatus’, do you think that DC might approach you to write a relaunched SUPERGIRL monthly, and more importantly, would you accept such an offer?
KET
If the TPB performs equally well, there should be a relaunch offer on the table.
I say the same thing about this new Titans book. I recommend, PAD, you suggest a deal with TPTB that if the new book isn’t selling as well as YJ did after a year (what was that, 22K copies a month?), you get to take over Titans, or even better, pick up YJ from issue #56. Even after 5 years on the title, I’m not sure anybody was ready for you to be done.
Good luck with your new endeavors, though, and may you be treated better than you’ve been.
Oh!, you are not funa anymore, its incredible
As I mentioned in a post on the prior entry, I think that the cancellation of PAD’s Supergirl was preordained no matter how well it sold. You may note that there is a new “Supergirl” (called “Cir-el”) at the end of the Superman 10 Cent Adventure, so I’m guessing that DC had already decided to cancel the current incarnation.
I started picking up Supergirl with #75 and I’m really sorry to see it go.
PADguy,
I too must echo a message above, and ask: why cancel the book if it is popular enough to be collected in a trade paperback? I’m tired of DC office politics (ie. cancelling titles to “jive” with the new Titans cartoon) being the sole reason behind editorial decisions. What about the fans?
This is just too ironic. TBTB at DC have decided to issue a trade of a story that a)you had to convince them to go along with and b)was cancelled after it’s first issue (basically). The only thing that would have been more ironic is if “Many Happy Returns” had lasted 5 issues longer by which time it would have probably risen to the top 25 in orders (at the current rate its going) and STILL been cancelled. At least, Peter, you can have the pleasure in knowing that your “Hail Kara” pass did indeed work.
Color me only half-pleased. I’d prefer the TPBs in chronological order, and the second volume should include that wonderful “Supergirl Plus” issue with Mary Marvel!
I finally got a copy of #76 by combing newstands at the Port Authority. Every comic shop I visited had sold out. I am glad you are getting a collection of some more Supergirl stories, but I am too bitter about the cancellation to be that happy.
I too wonder if the end of the 10 cent adventure had more to do with the cancellation then sales.
Very odd if that is true, considering I read that Kara was going to appear in one of the Superman titles.
That’s great to know, congratulations! I certainly hope it can lead to a revival of the series, but no relaunching at number one, please! I’d like it to stay the current volume and be able to reach 100 issues. That would be so wonderful.
What exactly is PAD’s “the fallen angel” and when will it come out.
and what titles is/will he be writing (besides supergirl, young justice, and captian marvel).
Very nifty news! And my hat’s off to you. What a shame the book is cancelled, you are on fire with this story.
I wrote to DC and asked if it wasn’t too late to save this book. I’m just enjoying it so much!
Poetic injustice.
As Zathros said on Babylon 5: “At least there is symmetry.”
As to the comment above about being unable to get #76 – check around at stores and on the web. My store has #75 through current issue all in stock, but this is not the venue for self-promotion, which is why I post under a cybernym.
I’d love to see DC recognize the error of their ways and relaunch Supergirl with PAD and Ed Benes.
And so another fine series bites the dust. Let’s see, we’ve practically gotten rid of all the teen books. Impulse, Superboy, Young Justice, Titans (well, sorta) and now Supergirl. Great way to end it though. Looking forward to anything else you go into (right now, there’s only Capt Marvel), and hope other new books come your way.
PAD also writes the oft-forgotten Soulsearchers and Company
One of the best “Super” titles going at the moment and DC had to cancel it. And, to add insult to injury, the claim that it has sold so well that it deserves trade paperback status! Nothing like kicking us long time fans when we are down. However, I agree with some of the above comments. If the regular title and the trade paperback does well, is it possible for a re-launch, with the same numbering. What a change that would make? My only question is, where do we direct out letters?
What the f***? Really, what the hëll? This has to be the most stupid thing I have ever heard. I am really sorry to see this book go while crap is allowed to remain on the stands. Here’s to hoping that you haven’t been turned off by DC and will write some stuff for them in the future.

If Kara stays in #80, and the book relaunches (whether at 81 or 1), I hope you are writing it, PAD. You have redifined the concept of Supergirl not once, but TWICE! Not only that but made both of them more loveable than ever. No matter what comes of this, we will all appreciate the modern glimpse you gave us into the mind of a young girl named Kara…
