Cross your fingers...

We're allowing people to post comments without registering with TypeKey, thanks to the hard work of Jay Allen and MT-Blacklist.

Here's hoping it works. If it does, we can go back to the way it was, where everybody was posting with wild abandon and flamewars started daily and bandwidth was being consumed at an ungodly rate...

...uh, Peter, are we sure we want to do this again?

Thank you. Wouldn't be so bad if it saved my information and didn't have to relog each time to post.

PAD, finally read the Psi-Man series. Enjoyed it and was surprised to see Justice in it. That David Peters guy was all right.

That's good news, because I hate the fact that your space was being disrespected so much. Although frankly, I've gotten to the point where I don't even read the comments any more, because some of you people are crazy.

But hey, this is a victory.

Yes!

I always liked being able to comment, and haven't felt like registering since the lockdown.

I hope this grand experiment in the first amendment works, but I'll hang on to my Typekey login just in case.

Posted by: LesterCarthan at August 17, 2004 12:19 AM

Since installing type key these board discussions have become much more intelligent, relaxed and overall far more enjoyable. Do we want to go back to the days where people would not address Peter’s specific comments but rather attack his religion, politics and overall physical characteristics? Yes registration for anything is time consuming and annoying but there are reasons why virtually all message board require to register to comment.

Very cool! I'm glad that its going back to people not having to sign up. For some reason, I just couldn't get signed up with TypeKey. I'm glad to be posting here again!

Btw, I read Star Trek: New Frontier Book 1-4 recently and thought it was great! Star Trek should be like this series! The cast and story are awesome. Mackenzie Calhoun is currently my favorite Trek captain!

Anyway, I did get the book through library loan (though sooner or later, I would like to own the book. just don't have the money right now..) and so after I read it I wanted to read Book 5 and 6. Well, the library looked for the books and could only find Book 6!

Is Book 5--Martyr hard to find or something?

Finally! Thank goodness! (and good people!)

DF2506, e-mail me. I have "New Frontier" Books #1-9. #9 is the hardcover version, if I remember right. I'm clearing out my bookshelf space, and most of my Star Trek novels (among others) are going. I'd be willing to sell those books (as well as the "Captain's Table" and "Double Helix" chapters that featured "New Frontier") for cheap.

Glad to see this improvement! A "script error" with Internet explorer (latest version) and my Roger's/Yahoo Hi-speed browsers prevented me from being able to use the type key service to log in and post here.

The only web browser that would allow it to work was Netscape Navigator which of course comes bundled with all sorts of services I don't want, so I was out of luck. It’s nice to be back.

I have the sensation about Mr. Peter David thinking about himself as a firm defender of the democracy, the freedom and everything what he thinks is not in the line of Bush.
Nevertheless, he applies sanctions and censures the global thoughts in his Web. Something in the repressive and repressed line of the American government.

Moral: we are all good facing the public. We are all miserable when we think that we lose our privileges. Crap.

Posted by: Alan Wilkinson at August 17, 2004 05:27 AM

YES! I was beginning to think I'd never post here again...

Posted by: gvalley at August 17, 2004 05:44 AM

Good. That whole logging thing was truly annoying. Blacklisting multiple offenders is the way to go!

Heh.

Fascists.

Posted by: Elayne Riggs at August 17, 2004 06:48 AM

Glenn, is this just for Peter's blog, or does it apply to you and Kath and Bob as well?

Posted by: Aaron Thall at August 17, 2004 07:59 AM

Oh thank GOD! My computer wouldn't let me access the typekey website to finish my subscription. I haven't been able to post since you set that bloody thing up!

Thanks, guys, for giving this reader back his voice.

Posted by: edhopper at August 17, 2004 08:28 AM

Good news. Though I registered twice with typekey, I was never able to login to comment.
This pleases me:-)

Posted by: Bill Mulligan at August 17, 2004 09:07 AM

I hadn't realized so many people were shut out. That being the case, I'm glad we're back to this system.

Posted by: Eric! at August 17, 2004 09:29 AM

Yeah! I haven't posted since the registering thing. I'm sure I was missed by all.

Sw33t. I never could get registered or whatever through typekey...

Posted by: Kathleen David at August 17, 2004 09:44 AM

Yep. It works for my site too. Come on over and comment.

I agree that having to log in every time and the way the "Remember Me" button was about as effective as a Fisher Price control knob was extremely annoying and a bit more time-consuming, but I support making sure that trolls like Dee are fenced off from the site.

But what's MT Blacklist, Glenn? Is it something that manages to keep out trolls or something the same way a registration system does? How does it work?

Posted by: Craig at August 17, 2004 10:12 AM

Nevertheless, he applies sanctions and censures the global thoughts in his Web.

Wow, a position of ignorance.

And people say this place got more intelligible with TypeKey. ;)

Posted by: Marc Foxx at August 17, 2004 10:15 AM

Ah, sweet chaos, how I missed thee!

Posted by: Joseph Finn at August 17, 2004 10:31 AM

But what's MT Blacklist, Glenn? Is it something that manages to keep out trolls or something the same way a registration system does? How does it work?

It works by blocking comment spams from certain IP addresses and URLS; the creator of the script maintains a periodically updated list of the latest spammers that you import into Blacklist, and then it blocks the spammers (and anyone else you care to block manually) from commenting.

Posted by: Tim Lynch at August 17, 2004 12:17 PM

Doug, I suggest you look at the threads that led up to Glenn imposing TypeKey in the first place if you think Peter's been using heavy-handed censorship (oh, 'scuse me, "censureship") around these parts. I suspect you're coming in without much of a sense of history.

BTW, Glenn ... not to say that re-enabling all of this hasn't been great, but if in your copious free time you could at some point think about looking at the Preview feature and why it doesn't work, I think a lot of people would be VERY appreciative.

This is a test, this is only a test. Had this been an actual post, it would contain some sort of information.

Posted by: EClark1849 at August 17, 2004 02:03 PM

Hey, Glenm

If you have so much free time on your hands suddenly, maybe you could post something on your OWN site for me to comment on.

Just kidding. You never respond to what I post there anyway.

Posted by: Charles K at August 17, 2004 02:25 PM

Sweet sweet relief.

Posted by: Mike at August 17, 2004 03:02 PM

Just a comment.... all blacklists SUCK and are worthless.

It's only a matter of time before someone trying to post finds themselves "banned" because their IP range has been blocked.

Hardly anyone has static IP's, and blocking them is the worst possible solution there is.

doug: Nevertheless, he applies sanctions and censures the global thoughts in his Web.
Luigi Novi: First of all, I think you mean his blog, since he doesn’t own the web. Second, the only person he “sanctioned” was someone who was harassing him and the rest of here with flames, racial epithets, and insults made toward him and his wife. Lastly, in what way are that person’s thoughts “global”? What, was Dee really Unicron or Ego, the Living Planet in disguise?

Luigi Novi: I second that motion. ;-)

Posted by: Mitch M. at August 17, 2004 05:49 PM

Ah, back from beyond.

I quoted PAD's "beat you senseless with a dead mackerel" on the Geoff Johns board, but a flame war failed to erupt.

I realize asking "Isn't Doc Savage made of bronze?" isn't as egregious a sin against all that is holy as asking "Julie Schwartz? Who's she?" but I managed to escape a 'warned' label on the GJ site.

The mods must have decided to let the mackerel threat pass, just for the halibut.

Nice to see everyone back and posting again.Welcome back to all the old gang and welcome to the new people. As much as i was opposed to the registration i did understand why it was done and hopefully wont be needed in the future.just in case im keeping the typekey codes in storage if we need them again. As bad as i thought registration would be after looking at some other
forums "Byrneing" up the internet i realize its not the regisration its the person running the forum that results in censorship and boring discussions.
