That's it. No more. I've had it.

After purging over 500 comment spams from the site (and my own inbox) in the last 24 hours, I'm done. No more unregistered comments. If you're having problems with Typekey-- like no confirmation email-- go here and post; the nice folks at Six Apart will want to know who can't get their email, so they can talk with the ISPs.

If that doesn't satisfy, then send good thoughts to Jay Allen and hope that he gets his new and improved version of MT-Blacklist up and running soon. Even better, kick him some money. (Yes, an appeal for money that neither Peter or I will see a dime of. He's an anti-spammer. Money isn't nearly enough, but the only church I can make him a saint in is the Church of the SubGenius.)

I don't blame you Glenn.
Just keep up the good work.

Yay! It finally worked. I like it. :D

Posted by: Alan M. at June 30, 2004 04:15 PM

If this works, you'll see no complaints from me (except those directed to a certain Mr. Dee...). :)

Posted by: insideman at June 30, 2004 04:27 PM

It is truly a THANKLESS job, Glenn. But rest assured we appreciate ALL your efforts!

Posted by: Katheryn at June 30, 2004 04:38 PM

Hang in there, Glenn.

Posted by: Colonel Cortez at June 30, 2004 04:41 PM

Keep it up Glenn, we all really appreciate it.

Posted by: Luigi Novi at June 30, 2004 04:55 PM

Well, I finally managed to sign up for Typekey, so hopefully, I won't have to wait long for my comments to appear.

Posted by: Kurt at June 30, 2004 04:55 PM

Glenn,

Is it Dee still finding a way to infiltrate the site? Isn't there a way to file legal actions against him/her/it? Or at least give us the IP address so one of us can go pay a "little visit?"

Posted by: Luigi Novi at June 30, 2004 04:55 PM

Yep. It works. :-)

Posted by: Joe V. at June 30, 2004 05:00 PM

Yay!!!! It works!!!!!!! Now let's start arguing.

Anybody besides me willing to contribute funds to
pay for a serious beatdown on Dee and/or a lawyer
to sue her out of her parents basement and force Dee to get a real life and stop bothering the rest of us?:)

Posted by: Toby at June 30, 2004 05:05 PM

Hmm. TypeKey was annoying, but it appears I have successfully registered.

By the way ,Glenn thanks for the good work and you can have first beatdown rights on Dee :)

Posted by: Joe V. at June 30, 2004 05:23 PM

i will gladly pay for the beat down.

I appreciate how frustrating all this has been for you, but hopefully in the long run this whole registration headache will lead to fewer trolls, and thus give the rest of us more opportunities to post *insightful* comments and hold *intelligent* conversations.

Got Typekey in one it looks like so far...

Posted by: Tim Lynch at June 30, 2004 06:23 PM

Thanks, Glenn. After a little wrestling with Typekey, I think I exist. If not, we'll see how this post works.

The only hitch I'm seeing that's probably in your bailiwick is that the "Preview" button just kicks me to everyone else's comments on the topic and not my own. So far as I can tell, hitting "Preview" simply kills my entry off.

no prob whatsoever here.

Unaccustomed as I am to public speaking...LOL!
Hey Glenn, you might have all the bugs worked out now.
BTW: I hate to bother you, but have you looked into the situation mentioned in my previous e-mail about either Peter's PC having a new virus or else the "wat bastawd" who duped his AOL address being up to his/her dirty tricks again?
Thanks in advance.
Lee.

Yay! Got TypeKey to accept me, it appears.

Once this is all taken care of, Glenn, be sure to kick back and take a nice relaxing rest...You deserve it.

Poor Glenn. He's been having a rough time of it these last few days. I can totally understand PAD's decision.

::::::::::::::NOTE TO GLENN::::::::::::::
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Glenn, if you get a chance, the dark gray menu bar on the right-hand side of the page cuts off after "Archives", "But I Digress..." and "Cowboy Pete's" and the remainder of the info is displayed starting underneath the white-background body of the page. Clearly you want that stuff continue down the right hand side like the rest of the content, and not at the bottom of the page.

Yikes! Poor Glenn. You sound like you need a vacation!

Posted by: James M. Gill at June 30, 2004 09:51 PM

I imagine it doesn't really mean much coming from some schlub you've never met before, but we really do appreciate all that you do here. I'd offer to treat you to a showing of Spider-Man 2 if there were any feasable way to accomplish it.
BTW, did anyone else pick up the DVD release of the '67 Spidey cartoon? They've managed to restore it beautifully (though it's still pretty cheesy ;) Ahhhhhh, the warm glow of nostalgia.)

Posted by: Randy B at June 30, 2004 10:29 PM

I had no problem with type key

Posted by: Craig J. Ries at June 30, 2004 11:10 PM

Well, hopefully this mess is sorted out soon, else I might never warm up to this TypeKey stuff.

Anyways, I want to talk Spidey 2, and this is definately one of the few places I think I'll get some serious discussion about it.

All in all, a great movie. Can I say it's better than the first? I dunno.

One thing I really love is cameos and mentionings of others. We got that in the first one with Dr. Connors, Eddie Brock, etc.
Now, Connors really isn't a cameo character, per se, in this one, but the line about Dr. Strange was great; I'm guessing it's Sony that has the movie rights to that character? :)

I wish there was more of this stuff between the different movies and studios.

Anyways, I had read, just in the last week, that there were supposed to be some mentionings/cameos of a few others: Black Cat (her real name), Carnage (his real name), and somebody else who escapes me atm. Unfortunately, either I missed these or somebody was yanking the proverbial chain.

Just checkin' out the new system.

As one of the people who suggested the option of moving to a registration system, I'm feeling a lil' guilty. Sorry Glenn :(

Hope in the long run you feel that it's worth it.

System seemed to work fine for me...I mostly just read your Blog but sometimes I like to comment...I know this will get lost in all the traffic but did Mr. David he was in Wizard this month, in the Magic Words section...wonder if they realized it was this Peter David?

Posted by: Brad Milyo at July 1, 2004 02:20 AM

methinks it worketh

Posted by: Brad Milyo at July 1, 2004 02:23 AM

Is the typekey login only good for the computer at home that I created it on, or can I use it on my computer at work too?

Posted by: Brad Milyo at July 1, 2004 02:25 AM

...and should I have to sign in every time I want to post? I've had to sign in twice again for this post and the one before it, even though I signed in once to make my original post. I'm confroosed... And how is this gonna keep Dee out?

Posted by: Brad Milyo at July 1, 2004 02:27 AM

Just got back from seeing Spider-Man 2. I'm sad to say I was underwhelmed. I didn't feel the excitement during this one like I did during the first one. Lots of good in this one... just too much blah...

Posted by: Jay Allen at July 1, 2004 04:39 AM

It will be ready in less than 10 days... Hold tight...

Posted by: Karen at July 1, 2004 05:23 AM

Hold on Glenn. With all this positive evergy being sent your way, your stress levels should be close to normal! I've said it before and it bears repeating; we ALL appreciate the work you do keep this site up and running.

Posted by: Fred Chamberlain at July 1, 2004 07:39 AM

Great work Glenn!

BTW, anyone know how I can remove my e-mail address from being publicly displayed on my posts?

Fred

Thanks for wading through that mess, and keep plugging away. Your work in the background continues to make this an entertaining blog... (oh, yeah, that PAD guy can say some interesting stuff...)

That wasn`t easy but I am hoping I can post now. This is a test.

If it works, please disregard the email I sent to you, PAD. Sorry if I was too hasty.

Finally, it works! I take back every voodoo hex I threw at Typekey.(But not the ones I hurled at the shrouded one)

Posted by: Bladestar at July 2, 2004 09:57 AM

Hmmmm, tweak some IE settings, now it works from IE...

Posted by: BHaddrell at July 2, 2004 10:38 AM

I don`t understand. I come back several hours later and two of my comments are gone.

At least I had no trouble logging in this time.

Posted by: James B at July 2, 2004 11:10 AM

Well, that was somewhat annoying, but no more so than for City of Heroes.

Verizon (bellatlantic) just doesn't seem to like some of these services... both typekey and CoH had problems with the fine spam filter.

This is variously James or James B (jbonnell@bellatlantic.net).

Ah well, got in with james_bonnell@yahoo.com.

I think things will improve over time. Just a few bugs in the system

Posted by: Thomas E. Reed at July 2, 2004 06:58 PM

The biggest problem I had is that I couldn't find the stinking button to register!

I had to enter a message, click on the "log in" link, then find the "register now" on the message.

Yes, it's possible that this might fool the more lice-ridden monkeys into not registering, but...shouldn't there be a link on the main page?

Posted by: Jago at July 3, 2004 01:17 AM

Testing this, since I signed up for Typekey about a week back...

Posted by: Baron Banter at July 4, 2004 11:21 AM

Testing

Posted by: John C. Kirk at July 4, 2004 07:12 PM

a) Testing...

b) I've noticed a small problem with the comments page - whenever I bring up the comments pop-up window (or display the comments for an entry in calendar view), I get:

**
Microsoft JScript runtime error: 'document.comments_form.email' is null or not an object
**

This happens in line 322 of http://www.malibulist.com/mt/mt-comments.cgi

document.comments_form.email.value = getCookie("mtcmtmail");

I'm guessing that most people won't see this error, because they don't have Visual Studio (or some similar programming environment) installed on their machines. Since I do, it gives me the option of debugging the code.

This has only started happening recently (since the move to TypeKey), so I assume it's related to that.
