I was endeavoring to delay announcement of this until Marvel was set to publicize the new projects I have coming up with them. But Joe’s “way of the dinosaur” comment at Wizardworld West this weekend has prompted everything from a barrage of e-mail to “Save Captain Marvel” petitions, so I’m forced to be forthcoming a bit earlier than I anticipated.
Issue #25 is slated to be the last issue of “Captain Marvel.”
The past two years has had its definite ups and downs. The “Marv Goes Nuts” storyline was designed to play to Cross’s strengths as an artist (particularly his uncanny ability to draw characters looking as if there was something seriously disturbed going on behind their eyes.) But Cross was gone before issue #6. I could have shifted gears, but decided to stay the course, and I suppose that hurt us. A parade of other artists each brought their own unique talents, but none of them quite had Cross’s flair for the types of stories I wanted to tell. Fan response was consistent: Gee, we’re bored of Marv being insane, and gee, we miss Cross. Of course, if Cross hadn’t left, they very likely might not have been bored, but that way—as Marv would say—lies madness.
Given carte blanche to wrap the series with #25, I started telling editor Andy Schmidt the most outlandish notions for a story I’d ever come up with. To my astonishment, he kept saying “Okay. That sounds good.” I then said, “But there’s only one artist on the planet who can possibly make it work, and that’s Keith Giffen.” Without blinking, Andy said, “Lemme call him.” Lo and behold, Keith Giffen is penciling issue #25, entitled “Exit Strategy.” On the one hand it’s completely demented; on the other hand, every single aspect of the book is resolved.
I know that fans are going to do their damnedest to save the series. Please don’t make yourselves nuts over it. My read of the current Marvel management is that their interests lie elsewhere, and no amount of fan hand-wringing will make a difference. Besides, in this day and age’s market, a five year (sixty issue in all) run is pretty damned impressive. Instead, if you’re really interested in being supportive of some of the best writing I’ve done in my life, beat the drums for “Fallen Angel” from DC. The trade paperback comes out this summer, the current storyline culminates in issue #11 with one of the most heartbreaking sequences I’ve ever produced, and I’d really like to see that series continue.
As for my new projects at Marvel, which I’ve been hinting at in recent months, both are limited series. In one case it’s because it’s a defined story with a beginning, middle and end. In the other case, basically we’re testing the waters to see if fan and retailer support is there to make it on ongoing. The latter series involves a mutant character of my acquaintance…and the former stars…
…wait for it…
…the Hulk.
So that’s what’s going on right now.

Posted by Peter David at March 22, 2004 11:26 AM | TrackBack | Other blogs commentingWell, I'm sorry to see Captain Marvel go. It's been a fun book to read, and I've quite liked it. But as you said, it'll have lasted 60 issues, and in this day and age, that's a pretty long, healthy run. I'll be buying the remaining issues of the series. (Heck, I've bought every other issue, why give up now?)
On the other hand, I'm also very intrigued by the new projects you're working on. I'm ecstatic to see that you're returning to the Hulk, albeit in a very limited form. But I hope, as a limited series, it's a biggie, i.e. six to twelve issues. That'll give a good year of great storytelling.
Hmm...a mutant character of your acquaintance? An X-Factor character, perhaps? Hmm. Let the speculation begin. I don't have a clue. But I'll probably be reading both projects.
So it kinda was good news/bad news day, as I predicted. :-)
Oh, and to anyone else reading: Buy Fallen Angel. It's one of the best new series I've read in the last five years, bar none.
Aaarrgghh...I'll need to get the Fallen Angel TPB when it comes out. I hate not being able to support the book every month, but I hope that buying the TPB itself shows support in some way.
As far as Captain Marvel, I will be sad to see it go. I've been kind of a lukewarm fan as of late, but I loved a lot of the stuff, including the ultimate Rick Jones storyline, which only PAD could think up, tell, and have it fit so well. It was a fun ride, and having Keith Giffen pencil issue #25 is going to make it a lot more wild.
Finally...Peter David writing the Hulk again. Will wonders never cease. I'll avoid saying any extremist fanboy lines about him showing Bruce Jones how Hulk is done, but truth be told, I liked PAD's work on the Hulk overall. The character grew, transitioned, and things happened. It was a good run and I look forward to seeing what else he has up his sleeve.
Chris
PAD SMASH!! How many copies of this mini-series need to sell in order to get you on the monthly?
Sorry to see Captain Marvel go, but, ohmigod, the Hulk. That's just about the only thing that makes up for CM's demise.
And hey, although you got dealt a lot of crap on this series (lack of regular artist after Cross left, constant threat of cancellation, U-Decide goofiness, etc.), it was still a good read. Kudos, PAD.
PS: I hope the mutant of your acquaintance is Wolvie.
HULK!!!!!!!!
I KNEW IT, I KNEW IT, I KNEW IT.
Sad to see Captain Marvel go...it was truly the one issue EVERY month I looked forward to and read while waiting in line to pay.
Thanks for the great run, Peter and keep up the incredible work on Fallen Angel.
Damn...I'm gonna miss Marlo...
-Albert
PAD, I'm the guy that asked about Captain Marvel at Wizard World. Sorry if you weren't ready to discuss all of this yet. I was just a fan of your work who started buying Captain Marvel since very early in your first volume on the title. I know that sounds like I'm full of it, but I'm not. I really did read your run on CM since very close to the start of it (and picked up the First Contanct TPB so I could see how it began).
I'm happy to hear you're doing more with the Hulk. And I am reading Fallen Angel and have been buying it since the first issue of that series.
Good luck on your future projects, and I'll be buying them. :)
Oh, the gods have awnsered my prayers PAD! Thank you for giving Hulk another shot!
Let me be the first to say it:
Strong Guy! Strong Guy! STRONG GUY!
I enjoy Captain Marvel serie and i will bought until it finish (here in Spain y only have read above 10 issues of the second series)but ...
Peter David on Hulk, this is fucking good, now i finally have read all your old issues and even the worst of all them are really good, i can't wait to read the new ones
First off, I'm glad you've been allowed to finish the book (more or less) on your terms. I'm sad to see Captain Marvel go, but, at least it won't end on some crazy cliffhanger...I hope...(you wouldn't be twisted enough to do that...would you?)
As for the Hulk...I haven't been this excited about an upcoming project since...well...I've NEVER been this excited about an upcoming project. And since most people equate your run on the Hulk with the Hulk's best stories...this just may turn out to be a long term project!
Talk about exciting...
I have written a FAllen Angel TPB's review in a Spanish website on comic-books
www.zonanegativa.com
I hope it help.
Best wishes for PAD and for this series
Oooh, Giffen. But which version? I mean, he has at least three distinctly different styles he's used in the past decade or so (one really dark and full of inks, one using only one line width and no solid blacks, one kinda in between). The style he used during Ambush Bug is my favorite, and would seem appropriate....
PAD,
It's sad to see Captain Marvel come to an end.
On the other hand I'm jumping with Joy (I don't know her, but she's excited too) over your return to the Hulk (stupid Jones made me drop the book that I've had the longest run on).
As for your mutant character let the guessing begin. Havok seems the most likely for an on-going from the characters that you've written. However my hope is for Multiple Man. Your X-Factor run made him a favorite of mine.
A Fan from NJ,
Doug
I'm really going to miss CM.
The impression that I get is that the "mutant" title is the one that holds the possibility of becoming ongoing and not the Hulk. Is there a chance of this Hulk series doing the same?
I'm really sorry to hear that Captain Marvel will be ending. It was as close to a PAD Hulk fix that I could get with you still doing some Hulk characters but without actually doing Hulk. But now Sweet Monkey Jesus you will be doing a Hulk mini series that is the best news I could hear! Hopefully this could eventually lead to you coming back to the regular series? Well I can only hope since you do put the Incredible in Hulk!!
Now as for the other limited series you will be doing let me second the guess that someone else already said and say I hope its Strong Guy!
"Is there a chance of this Hulk series doing the same?"
At Marvel, where the bottom line counts for everything? Once the fans flock to this limited series, I HOPE it opens up their eyes to an ongoing! (If Mr. David's willing, of course...)
[subliminal message]The Pantheon, or at least Ulysses[/subliminal message]
It's a shame if CM is going, but I'm glad to see that, as was being spoken about, possibly on Comic Book Resources, you'll be returning to the Hulk's book.
And if Jean Grey is the mutant you've had aquaintence with who's going to be focused upon, that'll be even better! Who wants Jean Grey in PAD's focus, everybody? Raise your hand for one of the best redheads around next to Mary Jane!
Well Marv so long and thanks for all the fun. Issue 25, Giffen, hmm, does Ambush Bug hop onto Marv just before he jumps in time and winds up in the 30th century where hilarity insues. Seriously the mutant, another vote for Strong Guy.
Is there going to be a trade(s) of the whole Marv goes nuts storyline?
Sad to see Captain Marvel go. I'm going miss Marv and especially Rick and Marlo who have been two of my favorite supporting characters since your early Hulk run. Hopefully you'll get a chance to write them again in the future.
Can't wait to see your Hulk mini-series, hopefully someone great will pencil it, I want this to kick Jones' Hulk ass in every way.
Peter, I'm really sorry to see CM go, but I have trouble believing that the story was hurt by Chris Williams' departure. I think that if the art's adequate, the story's strengths shine through, and while I didn't care that much for the few issues that Angel Medina or Kyle Hotz did, I think Ivan Reis' work was beautiful, Michael Ryan's was really good (it even looked a lot like Ivan Reis in some pages), and even Paul Azaceta's had its strengths, even if its lines were a bit undefined.
It's one thing to try and write a story to Williams' strengths; It's entirely another to say that the book was hurt because of Williams' departure, particularly when the replacement artists were really good.
I'm really looking forward to seeing if Hulk is the star of the book, or just one of them, and if the mutant in the other is a certain short and hairy one with claws.
You know I'll be buying them when they come out. :-)
Well, I'll be sad to see my namesake vanish from comics, but at least he gets to go out in style.
As to the Hulk mini, I, for one, am glad that it's a mini-series. While I enjoyed Mr. David's work in the ongoing serial form, I've always enjoyed stories that have a definite end. There's something about having a definite plan for the end that makes a writer's work really stand out.
Well, I'm sorry to see CM go but at least we get PAD on The Hulk once again. With the current Hulk comic moving to Marvel Knights I hoped that a new Marvel Universe Hulk title would be starting up. It may not be ongoing but any PAD Hulk is better than none.
I'm hoping they get a good artist for this. There are only a few guys out there that can draw BIG superheroes well. Of course, my vote would be for Dale Keown. Barring Dale's involvement I'd love to see Scot Eaton take a crack at Hulk. He does amazing big guys. With Thor changing writer's might we be able to see Scot on Hulk? Another artist whose work would be perfect for The Hulk is Paul Pelletier. His artwork has just been leaps and bounds better on Negation than anything he has done before. His big guys are amazing also.
PAD - Any hints as to who will be handling the art chores?
I'm just now coming back to comics after not really reading in about 10 years. I haven't had a chance to check out Captain Marvel, but I've been reading Fallen Angel, and I'm hooked. Not 100 percent sure what I'm hooked on yet, :), but am intrigued enough by what's going on to stay with the book.
Damn.
I'm really going to miss Captain Marvel, Peter. What a fun ride it has been! I hope you look back on your work with CM and are as proud of it as you are your other runs.
I'll continue to support Fallen Angel every month and I'll be looking forward to your new work with Marvel.
One quick question...can you, or are you willing, to tell us if the rumors are true about Captain Marvel being in a new Avengers book?
Let me be the 3rd to vote for a Strong Guy series.
The sad thing is, you wrote him so well, I wouldn't mind seeing you write Quicksilver, but Strong Guy would be just fine. :)
Kieth Giffen art? Not for me. I stopped getting Cap Marvel after the insane Cap story wrapped up (well not really it was kinda open at the end of "Crazy like a Fox") and the rotating of bad artists. It's a shame, I like the first series, too bad Jemas and Joey Q had to get involved with the stupid relaunch/new direction stunt. Now with Marvel becoming Bendis Comic Group (IMO I can't stand his writing), I buy more and more DC and no Marvel. Plus Marvel refuses to have single issue stories in any of their books, they drag 'em out to 4-6 issues. I will check out the PAD Hulk project for an issue or 2. PAD if you have any say bring back a traditional covers to your books with word balloons, and possibly a scene from the book instead of the standard Marvel pin-up covers of today. Thanks for lending and ear...or um eye.
I always wanted to read a Pantheon series featuring the Atlanta/Hector/Prometheus trio that were left, along with whoever else survied the Fall storyline. I always liked Hector, Prometheus and Atlanta, and thought they would make a nice core to a book.
When I saw the word mutant the first word in my head was "Havok". And I stand by that. Havok would make for a really good character to explore the Marevel universe with. He's been a bad guy, he's been a good guy, he's dangerous. The angles would be obvious, he's never trusted, he can make mistakes, he can be big and flashy, but he finds ways not to be.
The next thought was Strong Guy/Guido. But that would be asking to much.
Madrox the Multiple Man would be fun, too.
...if the mutant in the other is a certain short and hairy one with claws.
Why would anyone want to read a book about my hamster?
(Yes, she's a mutant. How many Siberian dwarf hamsters are smart enough to figure out how to open a plastic exercise ball from the inside?) :)
On the one hand, I'm sad to hear that Captain Marvel is coming to an end. It's one of my favorite current Marvel titles. It will be missed. :-(
On the other hand.... THE HULK?!?!? I was hoping that one of the projects you mentioned would involve the Hulk, PAD. Talk about a dream come true! I know so far it's a limited series, but I'm also hoping that there are plenty of fans like myself who'll show enough interest in the book to convince Marvel to make it ongoing.
Wow! :-)
Well, I am less excited about the new series - but only because I find your ongoing work to be much stronger then anything limited you have done. In fact most ongoing work you have done starts good - but then after a year it becomes incredible.
Still, I am sure I will be getting both series you mention.
What I am excited about is Giffen art on PAD writing!!! Have you worked with Giffen before (I seem to recall you guys co-writing a Starman issue before - is there anything else?)
Two of my favorite creators working together (even if just for one issue)!!! I am looking forward to the mayhem - even if I will miss Marv.
Hi again
I vote for Strong Guy i really liked the issue where X- Factor goes to visit Doc Samsom
I also will like to see Ulysses again, and Hector too
Sad to see the CM series go, and even with Cross gone, I still enjoyed the Marv as madman tale - but then I like (almost) anything PAD produces in comic format.
The Hulk! cool.
As for Fallen Angel - GO BUY THIS SERIES PEOPLE!
This is the absolute best series PAD has ever written. GO out and support it. Buy copies for yoru friends and enemies and casual acquaintances! Put them in Dentists lobbies! (or not).
PAD, obviously I'm on this site because I'm a fan of yours. Though many creators have shown you can't go home again and match prior runs on characters, I have faith you would not be doing Hulk unless you still felt you had something to say. So best of luck, and I'll eagerly await your new projects (count me as another vote for Wolverine).
I've really been enjoying Captain Marvel, and it's a shame it's ending, but once again, you've been given ample warning, so you can at least satisfy a part of your writer's urge and not leave the fans waiting for a resolution that will never come.
Of course, I was one of the folks you mentioned a number of times who just didn't care about Mar-Vell and the like -- My primary interest in Marvel's Captain Marvel comes from the lawsuit that prevents DC from using the title "Captain Marvel," even though they have the rights to the original character named "Captain Marvel." I always percieved the Marvel character as an attempt to take advantage of a unique legal position more than anything else.
That said, once the series is done, I'll go back and start trying to find the first part, since I started reading it to support you as a writer, Peter, rather than any specific work of yours. U-Decide came on the heels of some rather startling gossip about Young Justice being assumed into a Titans book that has since taken my favorite comic from me and replaced it with a book I haven't enjoyed a single panel of (which is why I stopped reading it after issue 3, rather than my standard 6). Having seen how the story ends, and having enjoyed it, I think the month I would have bought #26 will be a good time to go try to find #1 from the first go-around.
The sadness of Captain Marvel aside, congratulations. I hope your next one does take off, since it seems the clime at Marvel has cooled substantially in the wake of Marvel's firing. I sympathize: I had a crappy boss who singled me out and tried to ruin the enjoyment I had for my job once, too.
Also, I love Fallen Angel. It's got the mood I wanted about ten years ago from the Gabriel Knight games.

Sorry about the double post. I just had a language filter condemn me for the use of the word "g o - r o." I don't even know what that means, but considering it let in the word "fuck," I'd really love an explanation. Otherwise, this will stick in my craw and give me an anneurism. Like the news I got from a friend of mine the other day that Family Video (a small chain of video stores here in Illinois, if nowhere else) had adopted a "no-piercings" rule. Apparently having a porn section with ridiculously squeaky saloon-style doors isn't shocking to patrons, but a man with an earring is.
You know, I read the other day a comment from a Cable fan that there is to be an X-Force limited series later this year.
I plan to get it regardless at this point, but having PAD write it would make it so much better. :)
But a single mutant character? Well, I can't think of any notable ones that hasn't had their own series of some sort already.
The fact that Emma Frost and Mystique get their own series atm just boggles the mind though.
if the mutant in the other is a certain short and hairy one with claws.
Yes, because gawd only knows that Wolverine doesn't get near enough exposure./sarcasm.
I'll hope for Quicksilver or Havok. Someone, anyone but that retarded ape with claws.
BTW, this is sorta on-topic: I recently went out and bought a *HUGE* chunk of PAD's run on the Incredible Hulk. I could only collect it during the last year or so of PAD's run, because I live nowhere near a comics shop, and had to rely on grocery stores and pharmacies.
Anyhoo, I recently acquired a consecutive run from 346-428, plus 434 and 436-440 and the annuals. I'm about halfway through reading it all, and I loved it. I've read a few issues from the Pantheon era (specifically issues 396-400, the infamous bachelor party for Rick Jones in 417, and the wedding of Rick Jones in 418, followed by the very moving AIDS story in 420).
This is great stuff, and I'm glad I was able to track the issues down at a good price. It's got me anxious for more PAD Hulk. :-)
Sorry also for the double post, but some of the strongest writing of PAD's I've read was the issue of Incredible Hulk with Betty's death and the subsequent farewell. Very very moving material. I started with issue 454 and read through the end of PAD's run, but those last two issues blew me away.
Just thought I'd mention that. I'm so excited about the new project!
Maybe if you called it X-Captain Marvel it would sell better, and hey, the world needs more x-books.
Captain Marvel is the only comic I really, really look forward to each month, and while I don't think Genis & co will be completely gone forever, I'm still bloody pissed off, and upset.
Sad to say I dropped CM when the intervention storyline ended. Finances being what they were, it was either show my love for all things Fantastic Four, or a book I stopped putting at the top of my pile because of the story. FF won out. Sorry, PAD. I tried to do both. At least I stuck around for AN ending... Good luck with a stinkin' mutie and that green testosterone case everyone wants you back on. ;)
On a bit of an off-topic bit... Isn't it great to live in a world where, thanks to movie weekend box office, we can safely say that Jesus was devoured by zombies?
Sorry to hear about CM's fate. The big silver linings (i.e. your new projects) are already getting praise uptopic, so let me mention a couple of others:
1) It sounds like you were given enough notice that you can craft a true and proper ending to the series rather than having it yanked out from under you. That's somewhat unusual for cancelled books (or at least it used to be), so I'm happy that we'll get a real ending rather than a "huh?"
2) On the "Marvel politics" front, at least this time Joe was just giving away news a bit early rather than trying to create a self-fulfilling prophecy. Given that predictions of cancellation often lead to enough readers fleeing to cause exactly that cancellation, at least this was simply a news item rather than a sparring match.
Looking forward to the new projects -- I'm not a huge mutant fan, but I picked up your X-Factor run and will certainly take a look at the new one. (And Hulk, of course, is mahvelous news.)
And if folks aren't reading Fallen Angel, they ought to be.
TWL
Sorry to hear that Marv will no longer be with us PAD. I had not read your previous run, though was a fan of your Star Trek: New Frontier books. I picked up the first CM trade when it came out, loved it, and promptly got a subscription to it. I'll be picking up the Fallen Angel TPB and be giving #12 a chance in June (I just hate to start in the middle of arcs, nothing personal).
You've become a writer I enjoy to read every month, so now matter what the financial situation, I will make room for you.

Here's another vote for a Strong Guy series. Failing that, another vote for a Havok series (since the character hasn't been used well of late).
Kick out the jams on the Hulk, PAD!
You know, I read the other day a comment from a Cable fan that there is to be an X-Force limited series later this year.

Nope...Nicieza and (*shudder*) Liefeld. And, even were PAD to write it, that second name is about the only one that I can think of that would still bring me to pass the book by.
*****************
Going to miss Captain Marvel. Looks like another "Nytwyng's Marvel Reading List Declines" point is on the horizon, what with Bendis taking over Avengers alongside the CM cancellation. (Then there's the new creative team coming aboard on Thor that I've not heard of before...that one will probably be on the fence, at least.)
Well, at least I'll still have Fallen Angel and Soulsearchers and Company to tide me over until the new minis start.
I've bought Captain Marvel since the begining, and the only problem I've ever had with it is that it felt...too much about Marv and Rick bickering. Constantly. It was fun for a while, but almost six years later they're still going at it.
That and I think Marv would've been better served if somehow Rick wasn't around, I want to see this arrogant comsic powered prick deal with humanity. I want to see him surprised, and baring that, I want something EPIC, huge, and not dealing with aliens we've seen a million times.
No matter what every Marvel comsic/series and story deals with the Kree or the Skrulls, or the Shi'ar, been there, done that. Neat, but not neat seeing it the same way over and over again(Kree as analogs for fascism, etc).
Eh, maybe I just never really liked the series and bought it out of loyalty. I always felt like it was never what I wanted, it was fun for what it was, but it never seemed to be what I wanted coming out of Avengers Forever(which was huge, I wanted a series that had that sense of importance and purpose).
Truthfully, I never thought the series had a reason to be, other than to spin off from Avengers Forever. It never felt like Marv and Rick really wanted to be seperated, they just knew they needed each other(for some reason I can't remember or was never stated) and couldn't stand that fact so they bickered.
That and I didn't like the idea of putting Marv through the ringer when he didn't actually need to go through the ringer, IMO. He needed to grow up, not be torn down and rebuilt, he needed to see things that shook his arrogance off and allowed him to see that he could be wrong. Instead this whole "I'm gonna make the world better by forcing my half assed POV on everyone" thing seemed to take the element of the character that worked the least and beat it into the ground.
It's weird, a writer whose work I like, a character I liked, and the result doesn't work for me. It never really worked for me, but I wanted it to.
That and the costume change bothered me to no end. Pacheo's Marv costume is perfect, the Ross one blew goats. I find it hard to read the issues with Marv in the Kree get up.
Wow, Giffen and David. Two of my favourite creators together.
Can we see more of this, please?
Charlie E/N
Well, assuming it's an X-factor character, logic says it's either Havok, Quicksilver, or Wolfsbane.
Quicksilver, since Avengers is getting the whole relaunch.
Havok, as he's a pretty untapped leading man type.
Wolfsbane, as she just returned in New Mutants, and Marvel's pretty happy with female solo mutant books, ie Mystique and Emma Frost.
Well, I'd much rather read PAD on Genis than PAD on Hulk again. But I'll likely buy it regardless.
Guess this means he doesn't get the second Avengers series. Oh well.
From the way it looks, the most marketable thing it could possibly be is Havok with the least marketable albeit most amusing being some sort of Strong Guy/Madrox series.
Matt
Well I will miss it, but I'm not so very amazed. CM has certainly improved since it started being more about CM. The first run was just a littletoo much Rick'n'Marlo'n'Moonie for my taste.
For some reason I can't see a Strong Guy series lasting. He's great supporting cast, but not a lead, not right now.
I gave up on Austen's X-Men, so I have no idea what's up with Havoc. But he's a tad boring.
Quicksilver on the other hand is my firm bet. Admittedly, one of the problems I have with PAD's books is that they do tend to feature interchangable sardonic pragmatists (Genis, Calhoun, Apropos, Lee etc) but given that that's the central character type PAD's into writing, Pietro is clearly of the same school. I'll buy it.
To me, this kind of seems like "well, people are going to be pissed that we're cancelling Captain Marvel, so let's put Peter David on the Hulk to shut them up."
While I liked the early issues of this Captain Marvel run, the last several months have not been as entertaining. I really don't mind seeing Marvel go at this point. I enjoy your writing and I'm so pleased with Fallen Angel which is terrific! Anyone upset over Cap should check out Fallen Angel which is so much better. I know its apples and oranges, but when I read both in the same sitting, I find myself enjoying Fallen Angel far more.
I'd love to see you do other Marvel books, particularly Daredevil, which IMO has been extremely boring since Kevin Smith's run ended years ago. The issues are hardly distinguishable. I think you could make that book a fun read again.
Unhappy about the CM business, but understandable with everything that seems to be happening at the House of Ideas. I'll support it till the end.
As to a character that PAD is familiar with, how about Random... interesting mutant ability, not sure if he's been used recently, and if not, it's coming up on time that he'd need to be used to keep the rights in force. Wouldn't mind Strong Guy or Madrox, but something just said Random to me when I read Peter's statement.

As to a character that PAD is familiar with, how about Random... interesting mutant ability, not sure if he's been used recently, and if not, it's coming up on time that he'd need to be used to keep the rights in force. Wouldn't mind Strong Guy or Madrox, but something just said Random to me when I read Peter's statement.
jeff
While I'd certainly enjoy a Strong Guy mini-, my guess is that it'll be Quicksilver in a tie-in to the Avengers-related titles relaunch.
A mutant Peter has had experience writing. Can it mean...
Wait for it...
...
The return of Dick Chalker!!!!
Probably not, but you never know. Some of my favorite comic moments involve Quicksilver and Strong Guy, so I would buy them in a second. MArvel being Marvel, it will probably be yet ANOTHER Wolverine series, but if it is, how about bringing back crazy Bert Corrigan, the guy who thinks he's in the movies. If he thinks he's Frodo, he and Wolverine could have some cool adventures.
Ben Hunt
This is both the really worst news ever (Captian Marvel) and some pretty good news to go along with it... (Hulk limited series and unnamed X limited potential unlimited series (probably X-Factor related but i've been praying for PAD Wolverine forever! (not that he isn't in enough books as it is...)))! I don't want CM to go! I Don't want Marvel to lose one half of its cosmic series... (Thanos being the other one... which i don't see continuing past issue 12... Silver Surfer just doesn't count anymore...) I don't want to miss Marlo and Rick and Moon Dragon and Steckee and the others... This sucks... My letters may do nothing.. but i'm still going to write them... hell it worked for Paradise X and Spider Girl... Maybe it'll work 3rd time...
MArvel being Marvel, it will probably be yet ANOTHER Wolverine series, but if it is, how about bringing back crazy Bert Corrigan, the guy who thinks he's in the movies. If he thinks he's Frodo, he and Wolverine could have some cool adventures.
And, Marvel being Marvel, there's a fair chance Bert really did find a magic ring, and he's questing to dispose of it in some volcano or other, while some old foe of Doc Strange is trying to capture and use it...
...hey, just because you're a paranoid schizophrenic doesn't necessarily mean there isn't some massive conspiracy out to get you!
Man..Captain Marvel canceled. *sigh* Its such a good title!!! I thought the 'Captain Marvel' crazy stuff was great (especially that one issue where things got really crazy, set in that other dimension). I do miss that stuff.
" Going the way of the dinosaur" Talk about your lack of respect. I like Joe and Marvel, but the way they have been treating Captain Marvel and you PAD...*sigh*
I have to say though that I add my voice to the people that are happy to see you do the Hulk again!! I wasn't a regular reader of your Hulk run, but I did read some of the issues and they were really great. So I missed out on a lot of your Hulk. I'm definitly looking forward to the Hulk limited series! Here's hoping it does GREAT and gets you back on the Hulk regular series. *knock on wood*
Anyway..man..the Captain Marvel cancelation news sucks. Though I'm sure #25 is going to be a great issue though. Giffin is a good artist. Should be a wild ride!!

" Is definitly going to keep picking Captain Marvel up till the end and will read the Hulk min-series (and would definitly pick up Hulk if you became the regular writer!). I'm not sure about Fallen Angel though...my interest in that series has been fading honestly..."
Really sorry to hear about this. I always thought the prob with Captain marvel isnt the writing or the art but that it takes place in the "cosmic marvel" genre. People seem to be reading more down to earth stuff lately (unless they are miniseries like jim starlin does)
Well best of luck to you and I hope that you can get on a big marvel or dc book that fits you.
Hearing this, my first thought for the mutant book was Strong Guy. I would love a Strong Guy book, but he's been gone so long, do new readers know or crae who he is? Do enough old readers?
Then I considered Multiple Man. He'd also be interesting, but the same questions apply there.
I believe Random is dead, and also those darn questions pop up again.
Wolfsbane is a frequent aquaintance of PADs. She has re-emerged in the Marvel Universe. Marvel is trying more female solo books. She has a fan base, albeit small. She is current. All this makes her a good bet. She is also one of my all-time favorite comics characters. So I hope..... =)
But...... Havok is also a better bet, as people have been wanting a solo series for him for years. He has a strong fan base, also.
The same argument can be said for Quicksilver. With the Avengers hoopla coming this year, a tie-in like Quicksilver's make for a good possibility.
Just some things to ponder.
Go Rahne! =)
60 issues is almost as long as Mark Gruenwald's run on Quasar.
It's longer than most series running today.
That is impressive.
That, and the core base still enjoys the comic and the creators still enjoyed making it. Overall, that is a triumph.

I'm really sorry to hear about CM being cancelled. It's one of my favourite books. I suppose the news could be worse though; they could be replacing PAD with Chuck Austen. They're about to ruin New X-Men with him, so i wouldn't put it past them.
I'm looking forward to ur new projects though. I'm still hoping for a new PAD Captain Marvel mini or ongoing series sometime in the future.
Rogue #1 is released in July. PAD wrote her in the Uncanny issue he did before he took of X-Factor. Marvel are a bit simple that way too. he wrote two female solo books so in their eyes he is a female solo book writer.
I may be the only person hoping to God that the character is Madrox. Outside of Forge with his ability to invent anything, Madrox has the most untapped potential out of virtually any mutant out there. Think of the moneymaking possibilities of working 10 jobs simultaneously and coming home with 10 paychecks to merge into one person at the same time having several other bodies on the couch watching TV or traveling on vacation. Think of the educational possibilities of assigning one body the task of learning a martial art, another computer sciences, another a musical instrument, another a language etc. and then merging back into one being with all of the knowledge and skill or "feeding" the other selves the knowledge through the low level telepathic link they share. In Peter's hands this could be a lot of fun.
How about a New Universe mutant, like Justice? (OK, so that's really digging deep into the cobwebs of the past -- 18 years or so -- for a mutant no one else has thought of yet -- and a highly unlikely one at that.)
I'm seriously hoping for an X-Factor character here. My heart cries for Strong Guy, but I see Polaris, Havok, or Quicksilver as the more likely.
Maybe we'll finally get a good Havok book out of this deal?
Hmm as Aaron Thall wrote:
> Good luck with a stinkin' mutie and that green testosterone case everyone wants you back on. ;)
Wouldn't that be better expressed as "green adrenaline junkie"? You know, seeing as stress makes the change ha--oh, I'll shut up now:-D
Seriously, glad to hear you're getting to wrap up Genis' book the way you pretty much want, and I'll be looking forward to the Hulk mini, seeing as the regular book's in sorry shape these days. Maybe (and I'm nowhere near the world's biggest fan of PAD on Hulk, I'm just less critical of the man than any of the subsequent writers) if sales for the limited outdo the regular for those months, we can stage ourselves an honest-to-gosh coup in all definitions of the word.
Oh, but Peter, when can we get another Justice series on the books, huh?;-)
~Gary
I am sorry about the fate of Captain Marvel but must admit, it would have saddened me more if it would have been Fallen Angel.
I have never been a fan of the Hulk character and therefore also never read PAD`s Hulk but I am happy for the fans who enjoyed PAD`s Hulk. But I am curious about the other limited series PAD was talking about. If I find the idea behind it appealing, I will give it a try.
Congratulations.
Congratulations on finishing such a long run on Captain Marvel.
Congratulations on winning the U-Decide contest.
Congratulations on getting through the project under such difficult situations.
Congratulations on the two new minis you have coming from Marvel.
Hey, we can complain and grouse about the series ending, but when you look back, you did great work. Thanks, PAD (and to all the artists and editors and inkers and letterers, too!)
I definatly hope the new series will be more four-color stuff with traditional superhero action. I do like advanced scripts, but it gets kind of boring tough to get emotionally envoloved when they do finger snapping and destroy/rewrite the world every so often.
If not for wanting to support Peter David's writing I would have dropped Fallen Angel.
Hi
It was Vic Chalker, not Dick Chalker, i think it will be a really good comic.
I think that PAD can make a good work working with Liefeld like he do in BID with Rob's Captain America XD
I am truly sad to see the end of Peter David's CAPTAIN MARVEL. On the other hand, I am glad that Marvel had the sense to not abandon Peter. I am truly looking forward to seeing the HULK MINISERIES. I would love to see a story focusing on Hulk's Mr. Fixit days.
As for the other title, my gut feeling is that we will see Peter doing Rahne or Rogue in a title aimed at trying to tap the teenage girl market. Otherwise, how about Moondragon?
By the way, any Peter David fans looking for a replacement series for CAPTAIN MARVEL should pick up SOULSEARCHERS AND COMPANY. It is so much fun to read.
Quicksilver would be good. I really liked your take on him in X-Factor. I can picture the cover..
"Marvel's most Annoyed hero... Quicksilver." Then a shot of him tapping his foot, "Are you done looking at the cover already? I got places to be."
I started reading Captain Marvel with the beginning of the infamous U-Decide campaign. I'd just recently gotten back into comics and saw the second issue sitting on the shelf. My first reaction was "Wow, Peter David writes this book?" My reaction after reading it cover to cover on the way back to the car and returning to purchase issue one was "Wow, Peter David writes the HELL out of this book!"
I've picked up every issue since and enjoyed Marv's little trip through insanity, and was actually quite disappointed to see it end in recent issues. It's been a wild and hilarious ride. Spidey's cameo issue remains the best thing ever to happen to comics ("Omigod, it IS a whack-job psycho-sexual thing).
I'm glad you'll have the chance to wrap it up in a meaningful way and certainly look forward to the few issues we have left.
Thanks so much for bringing my favorite comic series to life. I know you feel there have been problems along the way, but I think it's been a near perfect ride.
Sorry to hear about Captain Marvel, but I'm excited about PAD's two new Marvel projects.
My dream book from PAD would star Quicksilver AND Maddrox. By himself, Pietro isn't as interesting, for a number of reasons. But teamed with Maddrox, the two opposite personalities playing off one another as they did in X-FACTOR, what a book that would be! Not that PAD couldn't make a Quicksilver solo book totally cool -- I don't know another writer who could make Pietro the SOB so sympathetic and lovable.
But no matter who the mutant of Mr. David's acquaintance is, I'll be buying the book!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay, now that that is out of my system. Bummer, although hopefully you can end the series on a semi-closed note. CM has been a fav series of my PAD, since issue one followed Avengers Forever, and it was definitly not what I expected given AF tone. And I've loved every minute of it(well, truth be told, more the first series then the new one). But it was good writing, and hopefully someday we'll get the old issues beyond "First Contact" collected(especially the Kelly Saga, and let's not forget the whole time warp in the toliet incident).
Hmmmmm, perhaps you can write Havok and Polaris, and since she's insane, you can have her dump Havok for CM. That'll be sure to outdo the recent Cyclops/White Queen hookup.
As the others mentioned, I'm sorry to see Captain Marvel go... I'm also angry to see it go. The Hulk mini is fantastic news. How about 200 issues? That's limited and gives me something to look forward to after being robbed of one of my favorite titles.
Seriously, what does a guy have to do to get this mini turned permanent?
Don't wait for the trade, folks!!!
While I'll lament Captain Marvel, because I guess I'm one of the few who thought the book was both solid AND great reading these past few years since the U-Decide relaunch, I think I'm happy that PAD will be doing a new Hulk mini.
I've never been one of PAD's biggest fans on the Hulk, in fact, I can be fairly critical, esp. re: the Merged incarnation and some of the comedic turns the book took while under his control. That said, I dislike every other writer who has come on the Hulk title since PAD left; whether it's that 12 years of nobody on Hulk but PAD somehow made it tres chic for everyone else to forget how to write the character, or whatever, the fact remains PAD is the best Hulk writer in recent memory next to luminaries such as Bill Mantlo, Roger Stern, Len Wein, and Stan Lee himself.
What I suggest is that everyone get out there to make sure PAD's return to Hulk can get the good press it deserves. Pre-order your copies (yes, plural) as soon as the solicitations come. If you guys want PAD back on the Hulk full-time, if you want a second title to counter Bruce Jones' less-than-incredible run (purely MHO), or if you want PAD to take the title back from BJ. we need to make Marvel listen to the only things they understand: SALES FIGURES.
That means: order as many copies as you can safely afford; GIVE the puppies out to new fans, lapsed fans, whoever you can so that the word reaches; and lastly, for cripes' sake, DO NOT WAIT FOR THE TRADE! This is YOUR opportunity to take back the character and vote with your wallet. If Marvel doesn't see immediate results, if they don't see an upsurge with this miniseries, if they don't see that it's selling many, many more copies than the regular Hulk monthly, then there will be NO HOPE of PAD doing any sort of regular or semi-regular Hulk project after this one!
This crusade is definitely one (much like the one to save TV's ANGEL!) worth fighting for...no question who the better writer is between Mr. Jones and Mr. David.
Go Peter!
~Gary
(cross-posted at Newsarama, the Hulk board, and elsewhere)
An Avengers relaunch?
AGAIN!?
Didn't they learn the first, second, and whatever other times around? :)
Wow...this is terrible news. Hopefully PAD's mystery project with a mutant will turn into an ongoing. The worst part is, what will ever become of Marv and Rick after this? Hopefully, someone will rescue them from character limbo.
There is a God!!!
I cannot wait to read this new Hulk limited series. PLEASE let it be a maxi-series, there are so many stories that remain unfinished! Like what about Janis from 'Future Imperfect'? She came back for a reason that we still don't know, and is (presumably) still wandering around the Marvel Universe.
And what about the Hulk being able to come out whenever he wanted to? (circa HULK #465). It was quite an interesting idea that was never exploited by any of the hacks that came aboard after you!
And hey, what about the U.S. government sanctioned Gamma irradiated chicken storyline that you started in HULK #404? Where the hell was that going to go? I need to know! AARRGHHH!
That's just three of the many story threads that remain unthreaded. Besides all that,I am just so happy that you're back. Now that HULK is a MARVEL KNIGHTS book, surely this limited series is a lead up to another HULK book, set in the regular Marvel Universe, with you at the helm. Sounds damn good to me.
Welcome back, Peter. Take off your shoes and make yourself at home.
THE HULK! PAD back to the Hulk!
I'm buying two copies of each issue - that's that. This is fantastic.
I'm fairly certain Miguel O'Hara isn't a mutant, but if PAD should decide to claim that he is in order to fit the description we heard, I'll be more than satisfied with that.
I need to go get my 2099 collection and read through Spider-Man and X-men again.
Short form:
Sorry to hear that CM is ending. It was one of the most unique books on the stand, and I was a great admirer of it. At least it does get to end properly, which is the silver lining, I suppose.
Long form:
On my site. Check as you will.
JLK
Damn! I've always enjoyed your writing, but Captain Marvel, of late, has had the added joy of being completely unpredictable. After you've read comics for the better part of fifty years, a title that consistently takes you by surprise is a joy to be savored. You made good use of the added freedom they gave you on Captain Marvel. Comes to that, the only version of "Legion of Superheroes" I liked was Giffen's dark version--the one everyone else hated--because it, too, was utterly unpredictable. I should enjoy CM 25 quite a bit, at least.
PAD,
I'm sorry to see the book end. I got on board at issue 1 of the relaunch and I loved every second of it.
Until Cross left.
However, I still bought it and I could still dig it. I loved the storyline and I still liked the art styles.
But the reason I dropped the book was because I dropped comics out of my budget because of money issues.
It sucks because I get caught between wanting to support and just not being able to. I hate being a fan on the sidelines.
I'm not realy a Hulk fan so I'm not jumping for joy like the others, however, I do keep up on your novels.
So I'm sorry to hear about the cancellation. I'll be scouting for back issues as soon as I have the means...not that it helps.
Sorry to hear that CAP is going away. I liked it, although I never understood why a book that often took place in the blackest areas (outer space) didn't have inking. Was it just something to save money, or was it something CrisCross wanted?
I'm hoping that Marvel revives Strong Guy with you--I really loved that character, and I don't remember what did happen to him.
I'd also recommend SOULSEARCHERS from Claypool Comics to everyone, although I'm not crazy about the new art team yet. I really liked Gordan Purcell's art on the book--perhaps Peter and Gordan will team up again in the near future. (STAR TREK anyone?)
Well then, congratulations are in order. Yes, congratulation PAD. On 60 + issues of Captain Marvel, which I enjoyed immensely but also on Hulk and the other project.
On a side note, I just saw "Comic Book:The Movie" and another congratulations on your acting.Well done!
Michael Norton
PAD on Hulk, but only as a limited series... I dunno, that just seems like a cruel tease of the true Hulk fans.
That said, I can't wait. A cruel tease is far better than what passes for a Hulk comic these days.
And oh yeah, I'll miss CM!
Having PAD back on the Hulk is the best thing to happen to the character in years. He wrote the best Hulk stories, bar NONE. As a longtime fan of the character suffering through Bruce Jones's re-cycled X-Files garbage, I am ecstatic about this. If we can get Dale Keown on art then we're talking fanboy nirvana. PAD back on the monthly!!
I can see it now. At the end, the son brings back the father! Yes, the original Marv is coming back! Uh, okay, maybe that's a parallel universe.
Enjoyed the run.
I haven't checked out Fallen Angel yet, but I'll change that this Wednesday.
If only Rick Jones could have been left out of this new incarnation of CM. Rick Jones was the reason why I never picked this book up. :(
A mutant PAD is acquainted with? But is it one WE are aquainted with, or someone new?
Come to think of it, when WAS the last new X-character?
A new Hulk story by Peter? Smashing!! Since Marvel is dropping Captain Marvel, would it be possible for DC to bring Peter in to do a monthly SHAZAM comic? :-)
So, yeah...
I guess we should be happy CM ran as long as it did. Thanks for a truly unique ride, Peter [ups-and-downs filled as it was (which I personally like in a ride)]. It's always sad to see a series you love (especially one you have been following since #1) go.
As I'm a complete meritocrat rather than a blind follower of... well, whatever - you'll be happy to know that I'm still buying Fallen Angel and plan to continue doing so. Naturally, Hulk is good and energizing news (suck potential for a PAD written Hulk mini: %0.13), and I'll give your mutant acquaintance a shot too.
Oh well. At least JQ gave you the proper respect of calling CM a dinosaur and not a Dodo.
Not surprised to read PAD's statement to the effect of Marvel probably not paying attention to fans' hand-wringing. A shop here informed me that they had ordered extra copies of a specific issue, yet still sold out on the first day and that was that because "Marvel doesn't take re-orders." Well, la-de-da. Makes me glad I buy almost no titles [yes, F.A. being an exception] any more.
"Marvel's pretty happy with female solo mutant books, ie Mystique and Emma Frost."
But are the fans?
A friend has always found the Frost character interesting and he's spitting nails at how they're screwing her up in the dismal EMMA FROST title, ignoring (so he says) much of her established back story. Not to mention the mousy brunette not looking ANYTHING like the statuesque blonde who was the White Queen. What? She telepathically exchanged bodies with someone (her high school rival, perhaps)? Isn't there some sort of law against that? At the very least she should have someone take her to task about it if it happens. Not to mentionher behaving in a manner not at all consistent with the very competent, intelligent character we know she's supposed to be.
"Peter David fans looking for a replacement series for CAPTAIN MARVEL should pick up SOULSEARCHERS AND COMPANY."
Love to. But, as I discovered when I tried finding a copy of the one with the League of Incidental Individuals, that book doesn't seem to be making it into Canada. :p
I really hate to see this great series go. :-( I will continue to support Fallen Angel, which is AWESOME. Marv' has always been one of my favorite titles and I looked forward to it every month. I am really sad to see that it is leaving.
No, Vic Chalker was the little guy who electrocuted himself with his own battle suit. Dick Chalker was the mutant dinosaur who called himself Carnivore, IIRC. Both are dead, but so was Purple Man.
My nerdery is unchallenged.
Ben
Its a sad day in Muddville.
I am really going to miss Captain Marvel, but the good news is a Hulk series written by PAD. Please, Please, Please do a story with the Maestro I loved that character. And a sure fire way to sell out every issue would be to have George Perez come on board the project. Good luck with your future projects Peter.
Regards:
Warren S. Jones III
Hopefully, the mutant books will star Quicksilver. PAD nailed him during his X-FACTOR run, and as the son of Marvel's mutant Osama bin Laden, there's potential for a really cutting edge series. I'd love to see QS teamed with Val Cooper to fight terrorist threats. Sort of like 24's Jack Bauer on speed...
Since Marvel is dropping Captain Marvel, would it be possible for DC to bring Peter in to do a monthly SHAZAM comic? :-)
I believe Jeff Smith (BONE) is working on this now.
Travis
PAD,
Man watchin another of your books get the boot, really sucks. I do have faith in you man, I know Rick and Marlo will be there in your new HULK book...they have to be. Marvel should just sign the rights over to you. Your continuing take on the whole Rick and Marlo storyline was my main reason for buying CM all along.
As for the "Mutant," I seem to recall a mini- series called "Fallen Angels" a late 80's Marvel Mutant joke......there was a couple of Lobsters, Multiple Man, Devil Dinosaur, and Warlock and Sunspot if my memory serves. I'm thinkin you can be writing Fallen Angel for DC and Fallen Angels for Marvel....why not?
Ok maybe not, but even if your new Series is based on the adventures of a Blue Lobster ....I'll be there.
Thanks for yet another great book, that "the powers that be" dont have the brains to see.
Quote"Peter David fans looking for a replacement series for CAPTAIN MARVEL should pick up SOULSEARCHERS AND COMPANY."
Love to. But, as I discovered when I tried finding a copy of the one with the League of Incidental Individuals, that book doesn't seem to be making it into Canada. Unquote
I'm in Canada and have been getting it for years thru my comic book store.
I had to change stores because the one before the one I go to now told me 'we can't get it in'. So went to the new one...and they got it no problem. Some shops just don't want to be bothered, even for an easy sale.
Travis wrote:

I believe Jeff Smith (BONE) is working on this now.
I understood Smith to be doing a 4 issue 'Monster Society of Evil' prestige format mini. After that I expect there'll be another attempt to launch an ongoing. Probably one that completely misses what the character's about, as usual.
PAD on the Hulk, even if for a limited series, is just too cool. Thank you thank you.
Ok maybe not, but even if your new Series is based on the adventures of a Blue Lobster ....I'll be there.
Would that be a blue wind-up lobster?
Yeah, there we go - Peter David writing a "VeggieTales" comic!
Actually, on reflection, I'd love to see what he could do with Larry-Boy... :-)
I think its a shame that Captain Marvel is getting cancelled now that its back on track as a good book. I'm one of the readers who thought the insanity story went on far too long and I hated the Coven story especially. I know of at least 4 people who dropped CM at the conclusion of that arc. I also really thought the gap between #5 and #6 was a big mistake since I know a lot of us felt like we missed an issue. By the time the insanity story was over, I was hoping Genis would be replaced by Phyla as CM. I liked Genis before the insanity, but now I have no identification or sympathy for the character and am glad to see him go. I am however, sad that we will be missing out on Rick, Phyla, Marlo and Moondragon.
This is such great news! I will be buying two copies of the PAD Hulk and hoping for the best.
Mark B.

You're both forgetting about Rick Chalker, aka #1 Fan, who replaced his hands with fan blades, realized he couldn't hit the recessed button that opened the door so he could leave his house, and slapped his forehead in recognition of his own idiocy.
I am the TRUE king of the nerds!
Adam Schwartz
Thanks for all the great work Mr David, I have been buying Captain Marvel since the new issue one and it has always been excellent, I particularly like the fact that the lead character was insane and that it wasnt going to end in one arc and also that you seemed to stick to your guns with each storyline, not falling into any of the writing styles that are becoming commonplace lately.
So Thanks and I guess I will read your other books to make up for it.
About the mutant title.
A Rogue mini of around 12 parts was announced.
So I gues this could be that title.
The last Rogue-mini s*ck*d big time, so now just let a REAl writer work on the character, so she will become interesting again, just like before the Lobdell-period.
Furhter, I really like Fallen Angel.
Although I hesistated a few months after Supergirl was cancelled, I still decided to buy the book.
Although I still miss Linda :(.
You're both forgetting about Rick Chalker, aka #1 Fan, who replaced his hands with fan blades, realized he couldn't hit the recessed button that opened the door so he could leave his house, and slapped his forehead in recognition of his own idiocy.
Didn't #1 Fan decapitate himself? In an issue by PAD? And I seem to remember Quicksilver made a quite funny comment on this.
Travis
In response to the StarWolf:
1.) Yeah, Marvel doesn't do reorders. So what? That's what advance solicitations are for. Also, this wouldn't be a problem if retailers stopped acting like whiny fans (and more like businessmen) and ordered extra of titles and then - I don't know - tried to SELL them. Most retailers i know in Philly hardly order enough of the HOT books, let alone ones they may have to actually push (like "Fallen Angel"). As a result, hardly any stores have a decent back-issue supply anymore. It's all about "pushing the trades'.
Also, StarWolf, I and other fans actually do like EMMA FROST and MYSTIQUE. EF was #46 on the charts for December which is great for a book with a female lead. And of course she's not like she is today. The whole point of the series is to learn and watch her grow and evolve to this point. Fans like yourself are what is killing the industry. Characters are not only supposed to stay the same, but to have also always been the way they are. Are you the same exact person you were ten years ago? If you are, that's too bad. The ironic thing is what PAD does better than almost anyone is keeping characters ringing true, while taking them in new and exciting directions.
"Didn't #1 Fan decapitate himself? In an issue by PAD? And I seem to remember Quicksilver made a quite funny comment on this.
Travis"
well, yes, thats what i was implying by the whole "replaced his hands with fan blades and then slapped his forehead." which would lead to a messy situation. led to a great annual by PAD featuring, if i recall correctly, Cloot, sean young in a catwoman suit, and a vigilante who was friends with Guido and inspired by the batman movie. A great pad written story.
I also enjoyed vic's appearances in but i digress, like when he leaps out of a marvel boardroom and his parachute failed to open.
"NERD extroadinaire!"
Adam Schwartz
Sorry to see Cap go, but it was a good run. I've been following Fallen Angel since it's beginning and will keep reading until it ends. I think I'll use the money I save to pick up the Teen Titans, I thumbed through an issue yesterday and it was better then I thought it would be and... Wait a minute, THE HULK!?!?! and when will this be out?
"The Janet Jackson situation has gone way beyond proportionate response. We're seeing a nationwide crackdown that movie producers, TV producers, radio producers, are all saying specifically relates to Janet Jackson."
Perhaps. But I do wonder if it all doesn't point to some long-simmering discontent among the Bible-thumping Right who just needed a high-profile case to jump on and start things rolling? Consider the problem with the comics shop in texas, for example. The Super Bowl thing was not an isolated case of society getting on its hind legs and saying "we don't like that." There have been others of late. Just this may have been the proverbial straw breaking some quadruped's back.
"Fans like yourself are what is killing the industry. Characters are not only supposed to stay the same, but to have also always been the way they are."
Not necessarilly. Two corrections here.
1 - A change should at least make sense. I've lost track of how many people of my acquaintance deride the beyond idiotic bit in X-MEN years back when Magneto yanked the adamantium out of Wolverine ... without killing him?! He's tough, but that's ridiculous. And out of character for magneto who was never really shown as deliberately cruel, except maybe against Holocaust perpetrators. And don't get me started on those dopey bone claws. Where the heck are those supposed to come from?!
2 - A change should also evolve from what they are 'today' to something else 'tomorrow' (comic time). The bit with Emma is having what we KNOW her past to have been suddenly being thrown out the window for no good reason and that history rewritten or ignored, all the while failing to take into account what we KNOW she will become.
There's only two words to describe this: bad writing. And why should we encourage it with our hard-earned money when we have much better writers (such as PAD) to enjoy?
Any chance of getting a core X-title? Look at X-Men, two of the PAD era X-Factor characters (Havok and Polaris), and to be written by *brrrr* Chuck Austen. Multiple Man, Strong Guy and Quicksilver are currently in limbo so presumably available. Come on, how brilliant would a PAD run on (adjectiveless) X-Men be?
Hi, Peter!
I'm very sorry about the cancelation of the Capitain Marvel. I'm a huge fan of him and of you. I hope you return someday to the Incredible Hulk, who is my favorite superhero.
Greetings!
Rogerio
1.) Yeah, Marvel doesn't do reorders. So what? That's what advance solicitations are for. Also, this wouldn't be a problem if retailers stopped acting like whiny fans (and more like businessmen) and ordered extra of titles and then - I don't know - tried to SELL them. Most retailers i know in Philly hardly order enough of the HOT books, let alone ones they may have to actually push (like "Fallen Angel"). As a result, hardly any stores have a decent back-issue supply anymore. It's all about "pushing the trades'.
And you've obviously never owned a comic store, nor thought about the amount of money it takes to buy and maintain such an inventory of comics that may or may not sell.
And that's the gist of it: the owner of the shop I used to go to when I lived in southern Iowa has an inventory of hundreds of thousands of dollars in comics that never sold.
Shops don't want to take that kind of risk, and Marvel doesn't want to make that kind of waste.
Starwolf, you wrote:
I've lost track of how many people of my acquaintance deride the beyond idiotic bit in X-MEN years back when Magneto yanked the adamantium out of Wolverine ... without killing him?! He's tough, but that's ridiculous. And out of character for magneto who was never really shown as deliberately cruel, except maybe against Holocaust perpetrators. And don't get me started on those dopey bone claws. Where the heck are those supposed to come from?!
Many things happen to comics characters that are utterly ridiculous. I can't begin to count, for instance, how many times Cyke has been knocked backwards into walls, hard enough to leave an impression, only to get up and shrug it off. After a while, you get numb - it's what passes for "suspension of disbelief" in comicdom.
Mags wasn't being "deliberately cruel" - he, like Charles, was simply fed up with the status quo of their little feud, and thought he could make them go away if he put Wolvie through enough. Little did he know, that would finally be what it took to get Charles really mad...
The bone claws? It was made pretty plain early on that no one really understood how those adamantium claws were supposed to have been implanted in Logan's arms, and be retractable and shit. With the idea that he had the ability to grow bone claws from his forearmes, it begins to make a little bit more sense, not less. When the adamantium was implanted, apparently, his body, in self-defense, extruded those claws. The adamantium bonded with that bone, as with all the rest of it, and the rest is "history".
On the other hand, I think I'd like to see PAD write a series about Northstar and Iceman... ;-)
You did a great job, Peter. 60 issues is actually better than anything CM has ever achieved; the 62 issue original run of CM (Sr)had a 2 year or so break between issues 16 and 17, and the character, storyline, and everything were pretty radically changed; so it's more like 2 different series than your run is. I look forward to your upcoming Marvel shorts, and I'll go anywhere you tell me to to tell DC how much I enjoy Fallen Angel!
dAN
I'm sorry to see CM go. I followed him from Avengers Forever and through both volumes. I even have the Bowen mini bust. As a fan, all I ask is that you go out like Newhart, not Cheers (ie, guns blazings).

Jumping into the Wolverine bone claw issue here...
It's been awhile since I've read Wolvi or X-Men (I have continued to collect them, but got so bogged down in other things in life that I'm quite far behind in my reading, like years behind), but my recollection of the whole situation was Mags losing it and taking it out on Wolverine, who would have died if not for the telepathic intervention of Charles or Jean. The bone claws, I thought, were implied to always have been there (just look at last years Origin), so that's how the adamantium claws worked. He had the claws with muscle structure attached to move them around, much like a cats retractible claws (with the exception of the fact that a cat doesn't push it's claws through its own skin). When his skeleton was bonded to the adamantium, so were the claws, being bone and all.
I could be wrong, but that was my understanding/recollection. And I personally prefered the idea that they were bone and not some metal implant, because how could he have operated them without some kind of musculature already there? And, bone is quite strong and hard (ask any martial artist who can smash his fist or elbow through cement), so I thought it was neat.
Monkeys.
Captain Marvel is one of the few books that I buy these days and I'm definitely going to miss it. I loved the title all the way through, especially all of the unexpected twists, turns and laughs. My main hope is that this version of Captain Marvel stays around after issue #25. Anyway, thanks for the great stories.
Seeing as how your run on the Hulk was the only comic that I read after I got fed up with most comics (and their glittery, hologram covers), I'm definitely there for the Hulk mini-series!
(just look at last years Origin),
It's too bad that I thought Wolverine: Origin was such utter crap.
What I find amusing about the whole Wolverine claws issue is how come is adamantium claws were always looking like machetes (thin) instead of rounded like his bone claws? :)
Depended on the artist, Craig. The original Weapon X and Wolverine illos showed claws that were rounded, like an animal's. The earliest shot I've found of Wolvie's claws looking like blades was in Frank Miller's "Wolverine" mini, where Miller's concentration was on the concept of Wolvie as a failed samurai. To thoroughly beat us over the head with the allusion, he was drawn with his claws looking like little katanas. Since then, he's most often been drawn with dirks coming out of his hands. (Did make for a classic exchange in the second movie, though:
COP: Put the knives down!
WOLVERINE: I can't.)
Hey, if you want to complain about drawings that clash with established character facts, how about the tendency to draw Cyclops as a buffed-out weightlifter, with everyone still calling him "Slim"?
Craig Ries:
I understand about taking a risk and money needed for inventory and all that. I just no of no other group of businesspeople who continually badmouth their own product and then wonder why they're not selling it. The comic retailers I know that have been successful take advantage of the 10-cent and 25-cent issues, drop some off at tattoo parlors, donate to libraries, and try to make deals with local theaters to take advantage of the movies. Oh, and they also hand out a ton of stuff - to kids in particular - for Free Comic Book Day. One of the declining retailers in Philly made people buy $10 worth of stuff to get their "free" comic. Then he wonders why he has had to close half his stores!

Sounds like some smart retailers here.
Though I'm of the mind that the economics of the direct market are so wonky that the system is more to blame for declining circulation than the content of books.

But bozos like this one can't help....
No. They don't. And neither do older fans who see nothing positive about the industry. I write for the Philadelphia Daily News, and am always pitching comic related stories. Yet almost always when I try to get a fan's perspective, it is something negative. Wizard World East was the worst. Every time I approached someone, even as a fan, I got negative feedback. To wit, some responses to positive statements and questions I made:
1.) Wizard is all hype. There's no news in Wizard.
2.) Comics are ridiculously expensive.
3.) Two-thirds of this stuff doesn't even need to come out.
4.) Grant Morrison is ruining the X-Men
5.) Chris Claremont no longer knows how to write the X-Men
6.) Scott Lobdell always sucked on X-Men
7.) Chuck Austen absolutely blows on X-Men
8.) Am I excited about Kevin Smith? The attention he's getting is sickening! You'd swear Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were here!
9.) You talked to Allison Mack? You know, they should have made Chloe black and kept Pete Ross white if they had to have a black character.
10.) You like Buffy? Come on, Lobdell and Niceza are terrible and don't know how to tell Buffy stories
11.) Jennifer Garner's Elektra looked like a whore
After a while of this, I decided to just mingle with the writers, artists, etc. as much as I could. Also, after making all of these statements, no one ever followed up by talking about a book, writer, or artist they liked.
(Jonathan (the other one)): Hey, if you want to complain about drawings that clash with established character facts, how about the tendency to draw Cyclops as a buffed-out weightlifter, with everyone still calling him "Slim"?
I'm having a very strange experience... because it's odd to see someone other than ME typing that out.
**drops flowers at gravesite of "Body types in comic art"**
Back in the day, like in the 80's, weren't there commercials on TV for marvel? I seem to remember (unless i did crack when i was 8... which i did... ) commercials for Marvel Comics with the tagline "find out next week in marvel comics!"....
Paul, I remember those commercials too. I had forgotten about them until you mentioned them. But, maybe we had the same dealer...

Paul Skowronski,
Yes, there used to be brief ads at the end of G.I. Joe pushing the comics, which partly explains why G.I. Joe was SO successful. Then the CONCERNED PARENTS OF AMERICA got involved. They were actually being dragged into comic stores and FORCED (sarcasm) to buy their kids something to read. So they put pressure on Congress to pass a law stating that the ads for comics could no longer coattail related TV shows (heaven forbis they face the pressure of telling their kids NO!) Which is why you don't see comic ads at the end of Spider-Man cartoon, Teen Titans, X-Men Evolution; Superman/Batman hour or anything else. Sad, isn't it?

That's not necessarily strange. The nickname could have pre-dated his "body-developement", but still stuck. (Given the X-men's tendancies to exercise, drawing Cyclops as anything but well-developed would read wrong.)
And sometimes, people are given knicknames that are just the opposite of their body type/personality as a joke that sticks.
Kip, it was established originally that Scott Summers was the "lanky" type - one of those guys who, when they exercise, don't tend to get the huge bulging biceps. They stay slim, at least until middle age catches up with them and they start to bulge in places that have nothing to do with muscles. My brother's one of those types. My observation is that, while sometimes lacking the raw power of their bulkier brethren, the lanky ones do tend to be faster to move, which can more than offset sheer muscle mass in a fight.
The problem here, as I see it, is that in the '80s and '90s, there was a trend that called for all supertypes to have the same bodies. Men were to be built like anorexic weightlifters, while women were all to be slim and large-breasted. (Which led to some of the characters I developed for the RPG "Champions" - Mass, for instance, who increased her bodily density to achieve the strength and invulnerability of an Asgardian, while looking like a mere slip of a woman... but I, too, digress.)
Paul Skowronski,

I don't know what your sources are, but the reason that comic books aren't advertised during a comic book cartoon is because of advertising laws that are in effect, not because of any conservative parent group.
Yes, because of advertising laws that were enacted specifically as a reaction to kids who were bugging their parents to get the comic after seeing it adverised on "G.I. Joe". The law did not exist before. But again, some people would rather pass laws than either tell their children NO or (gasp) have them actually read something.
Oh, and my source is pretty high up the food chain, and someone who would benefit tremendously if this law were no longer in place.
Sure, big corporations and that is why it was put in place.
Maybe it's just me, but after reading the phrase in the above, I think it might be kind of cool to start a JLA spinoff, featuring the parents of all those Leaguers whoe folks are still alive, and call it CONCERNED PARENTS OF AMERICA...
...like I said, maybe it's just me... ;)
Nooooo! It's always the good stuff that has to go. No more Captain Marvel and no more Angel. Arrgh!!! I just hope the series doesn't end with Marlo being killed or something.
Well I certainly hope Peter and Marvel will re-consider and continue Captain Marvel, the best comic book of the past decade! Let your voices be heard at www.x-worldcomics.com#savemarv
Ken,
Big corporations? Please. First, I did not say that. Second, why is it so hard for parents to tell their children no? Third, if as a result of ads at the end of "Teen Titans", "Spider-Man" and "X-Men", more kids were actually bugging their parents for something to read, as opposed to the latest video game or $120 sneakers, is that necessarily a bad thing? I don't think so. You may disagree. But i a tired of laws that supposedly "protect children" that simply are used to control people. Some kids bugged their kids for a G.I. Joe comic! So what?
Jonathan (the other one),
Your last post was actually pretty funny!
Thanks,
Jerome
Captain Marvel is one of my favorite comics, one of the ones I always make sure I get when I go to my local shop. I'll certainly be re-reading the older issues to make up for it.
But on the other hand, as I've been reading comics for more than twenty years, I've developed a taste for limited series over ongoing ones; There's a beginning, there's a climax, there's an end. You can buy every issue without going digging into the rent money.
An upcoming Hulk mini sounds like just my thing. Tell me Sam Kieth or Dale Keown is gonna draw and and I'm sold.

Since Marvel is dropping Captain Marvel, would it be possible for DC to bring Peter in to do a monthly SHAZAM comic? :-)
I believe Jeff Smith (BONE) is working on this now.
=============================================
Actually, I was going for The Pun..SHAZAM...Captain Marvel...and all that.
I am extremely disappointed that Captain Marvel is being cancelled. Personally I thought this was an excellent book. Despite Chris Cross leaving I thought the "insane" books were quite good. With the exception of killing a character, I get tired of seeing the status quo. Having Marv go nuts was an interesting twist that really didn't hurt the character. I'll definitely be looking forward to reading the Hulk though. HE definitely isn't the same without Peter David creating the direction.
At last. I've been struggling to keep reading Hulk every month, hoping every time that it will be better than the last issue. Now all it needs is either Dale Keown or Gary Frank and my world is whole once more.
Is the limited Hulk series about Rick Jones' brother, Bruce, who is slowly and painfully slaughtered by Carnage? And then, rather than seeking out justice on Carnage, Rick and Hulk throw him a big party, where they celebrate with the entire Marvel Universe! Wait...maybe Bruce is permanently maimed instead of murdered. I'd hate to see him get all of those virgins after what he did to the Hulk.
I'm sorry to say that I'm one of those fans whose reaction to Captain Marvel's cancellation is mixed. On the one hand, I'm disappointed that another PAD series is biting the dust and I will definitely miss seeing Genis, Rick et al every month. On the other hand, I really disliked the whole "Marv Goes Nuts" storyline. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that, for me, that storyline ruined Genis-Vell as a hero. I kept buying the series, hoping that something would happen that would restore the old Genis, the one I liked, but it became increasingly clear that PAD had written himself (and Genis) into a corner. Genis came to remind me of Garth of Izar from the "Who Killed Captain Kirk?" storyline that PAD wrote for DC's STAR TREK series. Garth tried to kill Kirk because, even after he was cured of his madnes, nobody at Starfleet was willing to give any significant responsibilites to a (former) madman who had demonstrated a penchant for homicide. When Genis helped to destroy the whole Marvel Universe, he went too far to ever come back.
One thing about the "Marv Goes Nuts" storyline that really bothered me was the idea that Genis wasn't really insane, he was just pretending to be crazy because doing so allowed him to act without considering the consequences. If that theory was true, then that, to me, would make him FAR WORSE than simply being insane. Truly insane people cannot be held fully responsible for their actions, at least not to the same degree as sane people. Criminals who are found to be "guilty but insane" are kept from hurting other people but not otherwise punished. However, if someone acts in an insane manner simply because he doesn't want to limit his choices by thinking about the consequences, then that person IS fully responsible for his actions and should be punished as fully as possible. So what should happen to people who destroy whole universes? (Thanos doesn't count because he destroyed the Marvel Universe only temporarily in order to repair a flaw that would have otherwise destroyed the MU permanently AND he restored things to exactly how they had been when he was finished.)
As for the final issue, I'm hoping that it will contain the (hinted-at) true reason why Entropy (and Epiphany?) destroyed the Marvel Universe. The whole idea that Entropy destroyed the MU just to kill his father, Eternity, and then was so bereft of purpose that he decided to become the new Eternity and recreate the MU always seemed too much of a gimmick to me, something to fit the "sons become their fathers" theme that PAD was using for that storyline. I much preferred the way Jim Starlin did it in MARVEL UNIVERSE: THE END.
As a fan of PAD's work, I would never have dropped the series but, now that it's been cancelled, I can't help feeling a bit relieved. Sorry, but I was a lot more disappointed when DC cancelled Supergirl.
