OKAY, *NOW* WE'RE COOKING WITH GAS

The troll hammer just went up on the "Buffy" auction. I bid on it. I'm currently the high bidder. I expect that to last about as long as it takes me to finish typing this entry. But hey, it was fun while it lasted.

PAD-

You understand that if you do happen to the troll hammer, you need to post a picture of you weilding it here, right? :)

Posted by: Tom Galloway at May 17, 2003 02:02 AM

Up to $155.50 already, and Peter's been left in the dust.

Btw, I really hate Anthony Head; per the Giles outfits up for grabs, the man still wears size 34 waist pants. Heck, even Nicolas Brendon's up to a 38. :-)

Posted by: Andrew at May 17, 2003 02:06 AM

Huh. Head's about four or so inches taller than me, but wears the same sizes I do.

Although, I think it'd be a bit weird to wear the clothes that someone else wore on TV... and I shudder to think what some people may do with SMG or Eliza Dukshu (Sp?) outfits that're up for sale...

Yeah, that's a scary visual place, isn't it, folks?

That's Peter's choice. If you think I'm going to shell out the two or three thousand the thing'll probably go for, you can forget it. The only time I spend those kinds of funds is when it's a charity event.

I actually put down 350 for the Angel coat but drew the line there. It's currently at over 650.

Although, I think it'd be a bit weird to wear the clothes that someone else wore on TV

Although according to the small print: "The items listed for sale in this Auction are for decorative use only. They are not to be used for their seemingly functional purposes and are only intended to be sold as collector's items. DO NOT use the items purchased through this Auction for any functional use, whether to store materials, for wearing, ..." (my emphasis).

Admittedly, I doubt that the auction police will come and arrest you if you wear the clothes.

Personally, I agree with you about it feeling a bit weird, and maybe getting close to "buy my worn panties" spam in some cases.

I wonder if they'll start auctioning off other weapons? Having the sword that Buffy impaled Angel with (back in season 2) would be pretty nifty!

Posted by: T at May 17, 2003 07:45 AM

I wonder if buying an item means you have full rights to it? If PAD managed to acquire the troll hammer I'd love to see it written into Captain Marvel somehow. Y'know, for continuity's sake. ;-)

Posted by: Mark at May 17, 2003 10:51 AM

I saw this title for an item:

BUFFY- Female Robot w/ Remote

Alas, it's not April or the Buffybot. :)

Posted by: andrew at May 17, 2003 10:58 AM

I'm guessing the troll hammer is going to be one of the top ten most bid-on items on the list. That's until they start putting up things like allyson hannigan and the die colored pool table.

My guess over 3000 for the troll hammmer. Much over 3000. By the way I don't have that kind of money or else I would bid with these guys, they crazy!!!

Posted by: Andrew at May 17, 2003 11:13 AM

The clothes are just to display?

Well, I suppose you wouldn't want to risk getting taco sauce on the $3,000 shirt you just bought, but still...what the hell?

I'm terrified to think of how much something like Spike's coat would/will go for.

Posted by: George Grattan at May 17, 2003 02:30 PM

Are the official Black Leather Pants of Evil or the Red Leather Pants of A**-Kicking up yet? :-)

Posted by: Simon at May 17, 2003 02:56 PM

Can anyone give me the URL for the Hammer i just cant find it! :S

Simon

Posted by: eddie bart at May 17, 2003 03:10 PM

It's called "Olaf's Hammer (replica)" not "Troll Hammer" etc. Just go to www.buffyauction.com and you'll be led to the list.

Hope that helps.

Posted by: Ben at May 17, 2003 03:24 PM

There are actually people bidding on the Kennedy outfit(hopefully they intend to burn it).

Posted by: Simon at May 17, 2003 05:37 PM

Cheers for the address and the heads up for the name. Just think glory was beaten to almost death with that! :D

Gotta get me one!

So just as a pure exercise in fannish fun, what are the top 5 items from the Buffy show that you would like to bid on? I'm talking actual items, not stuff like Allyson Hannigan in a green teddy.

Off the top of my head....Mr Pointy, obviously, Spike's overcoat, one of the Nerds of Doom's Jetpacks, the Inca Mummy Girl Mummy, Faith's knife....hmmm.

Posted by: odessa steps magazine at May 17, 2003 08:32 PM

Off the top of my head:

# 1 - The Bunny Suit

-- Spike's Lighter

-- Willow's Laptop

-- Buffy's tombstone

-- the Mayor's putter

honorable mention: one of the "box of spiders" from Season 3, a piece of the Judge, Spike's wheelchair, the disc with Angel's soul on it (from season 2),

Posted by: Robert Pilk at May 17, 2003 08:45 PM

Good choices! There's a number of rings, amulets and assorted jewelry that would be very cool to own. Huge bunch of stuff from the magic store, too. Buffy's trunk where she kept all her weapons, one of the eggs from the egg episode, Buffy's umbrella (smashed, I know, but still), the chocolate poster from her and Willow's dorm.... Well, anyway, it's all out of my price range. But seriously, if they saved all these props, ME or whoever they belong to can make some respectable moolah.

Posted by: Tom Galloway at May 17, 2003 08:51 PM

Jetpack, tombstone, Vampyr book, rocket launcher, and a stake (beating out the scythe due to the latter's limited number of appearances).

Things shown or mentioned, but not in actual existance; Giles' music collection, the contents of the library, and Willow's latest laptop that has no problem functioning online sans power or Internet connection. :-)

Posted by: RJ Spassov at May 17, 2003 10:28 PM

That's until they start putting up things like allyson hannigan and the die colored pool table.

well....I'd pay quite a few thousand for her but I'm quite sure alexis denisoff might voice some objections to that :P

Posted by: Ian Sokoliwski at May 18, 2003 01:38 AM

hmm...well, maybe I'd buy the Vampirella action figure from the Nerds of Doom hideout...if I didn't already own two of them (the standard red outfit and the oh-so-trendy black outfit).

*ahem*

maybe the bazooka/rocket launcher?

Posted by: Simon DelMonte at May 18, 2003 06:49 AM

Sad to hear that this is not for charity. Fox Studios is that hard up for cash? Guess that $150 million take from X2 went to pay Rupert's tax bill ro something.

Posted by: Ray at May 18, 2003 07:30 AM

Someone above mentioned Spike's jacket. I don't have a link, but about two weeks ago I read a panel James Marsters was on at some convention. He talked about the jacket and how it really gross because they had to smear ky jelly on it to keep it looking just right. He said it had this horrible funk to it and it became a joke on the set.

Posted by: Martijn van Turnhout at May 18, 2003 08:17 AM

So when's Sarah-Michelle Gellar up for sale?

Posted by: Matt Adler at May 18, 2003 10:25 AM

Off-topic, but the Captain Marvel cover is up on Neal Adams' site, along with an interesting story...

Anyhoo, so, Marvel asks Neal if he'd like to do a Captain Marvel cover. Not the Shazam one, but the son-of-Mar-vell-powers of a god-but he's insane one.

Neal says sure. Can he read the story?

Actually, sez Marvel, they're looking for iconic covers, generic covers not related to any story just general.

I don't see Mr. Gordo up yet. I bet he'd go for lots of $. I did see both suits worn by the demon Sweet, I wouldn't mind having them.

Posted by: TaraLivesOn at May 18, 2003 12:46 PM

I want to see the paintings that were in Willow & Tara's room up for auction! We've seen them through a few seasons in different rooms, through the end... would be rather wild to hang in one's own apartment...

Posted by: Joseph J. Finn at May 18, 2003 01:39 PM

Well, besides Olaf's hammer (currently at over $2,000), I'd love to have the Shadowman outfit (a relative steal at $180). Hell, Gile's satchel would be cool.

As for stuff that isn't up, I always wanted that African mask from Season 3, the one that creates a King of Zombies.

Posted by: Peter David at May 18, 2003 04:55 PM

You know what else would be cool? The "slides" that Giles created to narrate who the Gentlemen were.

PAD

Posted by: Joseph J. Finn at May 18, 2003 05:45 PM

Hell, the voice box the Gentleman had would be cool.

Or the Troika's Boba Fett.

Or the Mummy Hand from the time-folding episode.

Or the Sunnydale Class of '99 sign from the the end of "Graduation."

Or, the holy grail, the knife the Mayor gave Faith.

Regards,

Joseph

Ohhh, and the drawings for Cho-Ann from a few eps back, lol. Make a nice gory collection, lol.

Hell, auction off pieces of Adam - I'll take the 3.5" disk drive in his chest.

Oh, wait! Why didn't we think of this before? The cheerleading trophy that Amy's mom is trapped in!

Posted by: Andrew at May 18, 2003 10:00 PM

The trophy was brought up in another thread--and I want it!

Unfortunately, working a part-time job doesn't lend itself to having the thousands in pocket change I would need for it....

Posted by: Raymond at May 19, 2003 12:02 AM

There seems to be an awful lot of stuff described as having been used in Episode 22, Season 7. A Sunnydale shirt, Xander's weapons bag, etc.

And again, who's Mr. Pointy?

Posted by: Azlynn at May 19, 2003 12:14 AM

Now up - Evil Willow's outfit from Doppelgangland. That outta go for a decent price, lol. And Oz's bass guitar. Lot up from Ep 22 of S7...

Posted by: Peter David at May 19, 2003 01:11 AM

Raymond: "Mr. Pointy" is a particular stake once owned by another vampire slayer named Kendra. (Kendra was activated when Buffy was dead for a minute or two in "Prophecy Girl.") She loaned the stake to Buffy in season two's "Becoming, Part I", explaining that it was her lucky stake and that she'd killed many vampires with it. Buffy looked at her incredulously and said, "You named your stake?" When Kendra said yes, Buffy said, "Remind me to get you a stuffed animal."

As it turned out, Kendra apparently knew what she was talking about. Bereft of her lucky stake, she was killed ten minutes later by Drusilla. So she never did get a stuffed animal. On the other hand, her death did result in the activation of Faith, so that was a plus. Buffy kept Mr. Pointy. I believe she threatened Dracula with it.

how about willow's eskimo costume?

or anya's bunny costume?

i bet they'd sell well.

Posted by: Tom Galloway at May 19, 2003 01:45 AM

More cool (and appropriately priced) stuff; 3 silver crosses from season 1, the Sunnydale High mascot boar costume, a Spike leather coat and denin jeans combo (not *the* Spikecoat, but still), the garden gnome that had the surveillance camera in the Summers' yard, Riley's commando belt, and Manny's foot from Doublemeat Palace.

Posted by: kelita at May 19, 2003 02:40 AM

Woo-hoo! I've been winning Evil Willow's costume for over 30 minutes now. That's more than I was expecting.

Posted by: William at May 19, 2003 10:38 AM

A question:

How do people afford to spend thousands of dollars on "fluff" like this? I mean I collect comics, toys, books, etc., but I don't have an extra 2 or 3 grand laying around that I can just decide to bid on the last pair of pants SMG wore on Buffy. For purchases of even just a couple hundred dollars, I have to budget and save for specific items. Do these people have such mad money just laying around? Are they wealthy? Do they not eat for the rest of the year? How can they afford this?

I'm not poor, but dropping $4000 on one of Buffy's costumes just sounds insane to me...and I buy old, four-color pieces of newsprint for WAY more than cover price (sometimes, anyway). Other people must have much better paying jobs, or no expenses.

I have just always wanted to know how the "Jones'es" manage to keep up.

Posted by: Alan M. at May 19, 2003 11:12 AM

More cool (and appropriately priced) stuff; 3 silver crosses from season 1

The crosses actually make me wonder how...legitimate this auction is. If you look at the description, it says they're from episode 16 of season 1. That's right, the 16th episode of a 12-episode season.

Hmmm......

Posted by: Johny at May 19, 2003 12:22 PM

Without spoiling anything.

Just wanna let you guys know that I just watched "Chosen", good episode, cool ending. Expected a little bit more, but still great. Now it feels kinda strange not having another episode after this one.

Until, PAD's comments about it tomorrow night...

I'd kill to have the nametag that Oz wore to the frat party with the fear demon. Okay, maybe not kill, but...

Since it appeared to be an adhesive badge stuck onto his shirt, I'm thinking it doesn't exist anymore.

Although frankly that's one you could make yourself. Impress your friends.

"Xander, don't taunt the fear demon."

"Why, can he hurt me?"

"No, it's just tacky."

I think people have named off some great things, I'll toss off a few more:

-Spike's motorcycle helmet, aka what Dawn and Andrew have worn

-One of the bride's maid dresses from Anya's wedding

-Some of the sketches Angelus did from season 2 of the people he stalked... and killed

-Caleb's ring

-Spike's black-windowed car

Oh, and probably the coolest?

-The "Bronze" sign.

Posted by: Tom Galloway at May 19, 2003 04:54 PM

Well, per TV Guide, we won't be seeing the scythe go up for auction. That's what Joss is keeping for himself.

Posted by: Johny at May 19, 2003 09:36 PM

Yeah.. here is scifi wire, quoting Joss' interview at TV Guide...

Joss Whedon, creator of UPN's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, told TV Guide Online that he kept on major prop from the series finale, airing on May 20. "The scythe that appeared at the end of the last episode, episode 20. Buffy finds a scythe, and it happens to be the scythe that Melaka Fray uses in the comic book [Fray] that I wrote, so we decided to bring that to life."

But , that is a really cool weapon/ prop. I wouldn't mind if someone decided to produce a replica of it. I wouldn't mind saving some money just to get one of those.

Johny

Posted by: Robert Pilk at May 19, 2003 10:43 PM

Why does everyone call it a scythe? It's an axe! An axe, I tell you! Could you cut wheat with it? No! Could you wear a hooded shroud and collect souls with it? Well, okay, maybe. But still. It ain't a scythe. It's an axe, dammit.

Posted by: Johny at May 19, 2003 11:01 PM

WHy do we call it a scythe?

(obs. it's not all an axe also, it's kinda a mix, with a wooden stake at the other end, and apparently other features)

1. Because Urkonn in Fray #6, call it a scythe, which was it's first appearance.

2. In Tales of The Slayer, Mel calls it scythe.

3. In End of Days the one of the Guardians who created it call it a scythe.

That's why we call it scythe.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.. it doens't make sense... it doesn't look like death-ish type scythe....or an wheat-ist type of scuthe... but they call it that way.. we just follow....

Johny

Posted by: Keith Barnes at May 20, 2003 11:12 AM

It's called a scythe for the same reason that Aquaman's hand was called a hook, despite the fact that it was a harpoon. I don't know what that reason may be, but, I'm sure it exists.

Posted by: Peter David at May 20, 2003 01:50 PM

It's called a scythe for the same reason that Aquaman's hand was called a hook, despite the fact that it was a harpoon. I don't know what that reason may be, but, I'm sure it exists.

Well, no, it's different. In Aquaman's case, the creator of the weapon--i.e., me--always referred to it correctly as a harpoon. Fans who wanted to be condescending and say that I'd turned Aquaman into Captain Hook kept calling it a hook, and that's what others who knew no better called it.

In this instance, it's backwards. The creator is calling it, incorrectly a scythe, and the fans are the ones getting it right.
