DAVE COCKRUM UPDATE

Dave, I have been told, is off the respirator and being moved out of the ICU. So that's, obviously, all very positive.

A number of people have been asking me about the Tribute book being organized in order to help with Dave and Paty's expenses. Any pros interested in contributing should e-mail: cliffordmeth@yahoo.com. Cliff is the one organizing it, or at least organizing the one that I know about.

Good news indeed! :)

Get well soon Dave!

Hope he comes back to his normal self soon. I can understand what he's going through because I have allergies and respatory problems myself...I have fought allergies all my life...

Last month I wound up in the ER because I had a severe cold and couldn't breathe ...it's the scariest thing in the world when you can't catch your breath..

Did his diabetes set it off?

Posted by: Chris at January 18, 2004 11:56 AM

It's doubtful that his diabetes set it off, but diabetes is a disease that complicates everything else. It makes recovering from certain injuries very long and drawn out. I'd be more concerned to see if the flu leaves him with an ongoing asthma condition.

I'm glad to hear that Dave's condition is improving. Here's hoping for a full and speedy recovery!

For those interested in the Tribute book, there's a Newsarama article that talks about it, among other fund raising endeavours, and mentions how one can go about ordering it. Just click on the link below:

I'd like to get the tribute book talked about on Newsarama, but I'm in Canada. Anybody know who to get ahold of to find out if we can get it here, and how much it might cost for postage? Would it be Cliff?

Dave Cockrum Recovering Slowly;

Tribute Book Unites Industry Legends

January 26, 2004--Dave Cockrum?s condition has improved from critical to stable. Hospitalized with a severe case of double pneumonia, as well as a bacterial infection in his lungs and his blood, Cockrum is now off the respirator and able to communicate. He is being cared for at the Intensive Care Unit at Bronx Veterans Administration Hospital in New York.

Cockrum, who made his professional debut in 1973 on DC's Legion of Superheroes, became one of the last members of Marvel's legendary Bullpen where he revamped the then-canceled Uncanny X-Men. The characters he personally designed include Nightcrawler, Colossus, Storm, Mystique, Phoenix, ThunderBird, The StarJammers, and The Futurians.

Aardwolf Publishing is assembling an art portfolio and tribute to benefit the Cockrums. Edited by Clifford Meth, THE UNCANNY DAVE COCKRUM TRIBUTE includes a parade of industry legends who have donated unpublished art and writings to the book. Contributors include Neal Adams, Murphy Anderson, Sergio Aragones, Terry Austin, Dick Ayers, Mark Bagley, Charles Barnett, David Boswell, Travis Charist, Chris Claremont, Gene Colan, Peter David, Alan Davis, Diane Duane, Harlan Ellison, Steve Englehart, Mark Evanier, Neil Gaiman, Ron Garney, Mike Grell, Tony Isabella, Bill Messner-Loebs, Steve Lieber, Stan Lee, Pablo Marcus, Bob McLeod, Jerry Ordway, Tom Palmer, Mike Pascale, George Perez, John Romita, Joe Rubinstein, Marie Severin, Dave Sim, Walt Simonson, Mark Texeira, Roy Thomas, Herb Trimpe, Lee Weeks, Len Wein, and Marv Wolfman. A benefit auction is also being planned.

What is Dave's current health status? I heard a vague rumour that he will be unable to draw again - i do hope that is not true!

He did a terrible Legion and a great X-Men...it would be a sad loss to the industry if he was not longer working.

Get well soon, Dave
