Celebrated the 4th the way I usually do

I watched “1776” with my signed Broadway Bear of William Daniels’ John Adams next to me.

You know, I’ve done two community theater productions of that show. I’ve played Colonel McKean and Richard Henry Lee, which is the best role in the show. But I’m thinking now I’d love to play the representative from New York, because I’d do it with a New York attitude and accent.

Morris of New York: “Newyawk abstains…coiteously.”

Secretary Thomson: New York abstains.

Morris: (shouting) Coiteously!

  1. Curious: Do you watch the Director’s Cut, with the added musical number, or the Extended Cut, which contains everything that was originally onstage (i.e. including dialogue cut from the movie and the musical intro to “He Plays The Violin”)?

I have played, at one time or other, Lee, Rutledge, and Caesar Rodney. Since weight loss becomes moredifficult with age, I would like to play Franklin someday.

  2. Same here. Also enjoyed a couple Sam Adams beers and ate some hot dogs while watching!

Watching again, it seems to me that the villain of the piece, other than ‘fat King George’ is not Dickinson, but Rutledge. What do you think?

  3. We also watched “1776”. Look, all I’m saying is that if TBS can play 24 hours of “A Christmas Story” on Dec 25, they can play a full day of “1776.”

I have also performed in the show, as Edward Rutledge, which is, of course, the best role in the show… except for Ben Franklin. 🙂

I do not think that there is a villain in “1776.” There is conflict, which is necessary for good drama, but that comes from various sources… even John Adams himself on occasion.

Having said that, certainly Rutledge presents a very dark antagonism to the show in his turn. Rutledge is not opposed to the idea of independence – he votes for it in the end. He is driven to act in the best interests of his sovereign nation of South Carolina… and that goes against what a lot of the delegates either do not want, or will not admit.

But my stars, what a fun and exciting show! Sorry I never got to see PAD in it!

  4. I spent a lot of the 4th watching the TWILIGHT ZONE marathon on Syfy. I also enjoyed a great dinner of hot dogs with sauerkraut, one with ketchup and one with spicy brown mustard. The simple pleasures can be so enjoyable…

  5. Hope everyone had enjoyable Fourth.

And speaking of the Fourth (and the Twilight Zone, where you’d once have expected such things to happen), I read today than a number of people had strongly negative reactions yesterday when NPR tweeted the Declaration of Independence.

Yes, that Declaration of Independence. Apparently NPR hosts have been reading it over the air on July 4 for the past 29 years, and decided to add Twitter to the mix this year. Seems those protesting the tweets thought NPR was commenting on the current political climate and was inciting violence.

In fairness, a few people who’d attacked NPR apologized and issued mea culpas after realizing the context of the tweets, but what does it say about the quality of our education system when people don’t recognize the Declaration of Independence, especially on the Fourth of July?

Or, at the very least, take note of the fact that the tweets were issued on the Fourth and go online to check if the passages being tweeted might just happen to come from the Declaration.

But I guess that’s contrary to the knee-jerk reaction school of thought permeating much of society these days.

Maybe we are in the Twilight Zone. Anyone seen Rod Serling lurking about?

    Rick.

  6. I also watched the extended cut. The rest of the year, if I watch it just because I feel like it, I watch the director’s cut. I also had recipes I’d made from the City Tavern’s cookbook for dinner and a cocktail made with a local craft rum made from a colonial recipe.

I so want to play Rutledge, which, thanks to the licensing specifications that male characters can be played by women so long as the characters are still presented as men, isn’t an entirely unrealistic dream. Or Adams, but Rutledge does have the best song in the show.

  7. Back in February, since the granddaughters (Maggie, 11 and Natalie, 9) had never seen a Real Circus and the Big Show was making its last, rather pitiful tour (One ring? Really?), i took them and their parents to the show here in the Atlanta area.

They’d also never seen a Real Fireworks Display.

    Can’t say that anymore.

Maggie, Natalie, Helen and i (Steve has issues with fireworks since Iraq) went to the show at Mall of Georgia, and while it wasn’t the best i’ve ever seen (or even the best i’ve seen at MoG), they loved it.

Also, i tried out the camera setup i’ll be shooting the eclipse with.

    And here are pictures.

  8. I watched a marathon of the Captain America movies, my favorite corner of the MCU.
