What Trump SHOULD Have Said

It occurs to me that rather than simply criticize Trump for what he says, thereby adding nothing to the discourse and simply infuriating his followers, I should instead make clear the way a future leader should conduct himself.

What Trump should have said in his Twitter feed is: “I regret that John Lewis believes my presidency is illegitimate. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to working with him and his peers to make America great again.”

That is the proper response for the leader of the free world. Not an assault on the city that the man has represented for decades, and about which Trump himself spoke positively a mere 10 years ago.

  1. You’re making the mistake of thinking Trump can somehow turn into a responsible adult rather than a narcissistic man-baby who makes everything about him. And anyone who voted for him has turned into Nelson from “The Simpsons.”

  2. Well, sure, when someone like YOU thinks about it, it sounds just fine.

Problem is, you have the class, quality, and diplomacy to be president… and he’s got the job.

Stay cool PAD… like a polar bear’s butt!

  3. From today’s (Wednesday, January 18th) NYT Op-Ed page…

    Retweeting Donald Trump
    By Thomas L. Friedman
    `
    QUOTED PROPOSED “RETWEETS”:
    `
What if, after Meryl Streep used her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes to decry Trump’s cruel impersonation of a handicapped reporter, Trump — instead of ridiculously calling her “one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood” — had tweeted: “Meryl Streep, greatest actress ever, ever, ever. Stuff happens in campaigns, Meryl. Even I have regrets. But watch, I’ll make you proud of my presidency!!!!”
    `
What if, after John Lewis, the congressman and civil rights hero, questioned the legitimacy of Trump’s election, Trump hadn’t sneered that Lewis was “all talk, talk, talk” and “should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape.” What if Trump instead tweeted: “John Lewis, a great American, let’s walk together through your district and develop a plan to improve people’s lives there. Obama was all talk. I’m all action. Call me Friday after 1 p.m. 202-456-1414. I’ll show you how legit I am.”
    `
What if on New Year’s Trump — instead of tweeting “Happy New Year to all, including to my many enemies” who “lost so badly they just don’t know what to do” — had tweeted: “Happy New Year to every American — especially to Hillary Clinton and her supporters who fought a tough campaign — very tough. Let’s together make 2017 amazing (!!!!!!) for every American. Love!”
    `
What if, after a cast member of the musical “Hamilton” appealed to Vice President-elect Mike Pence to “uphold our American values” and “work on behalf of all of us,” Trump — instead of denouncing the actor as being “very rude and insulting” and claiming he “couldn’t even memorize lines” — had instead tweeted: “To the cast of Hamilton: Appreciate your sincere concern for our country. When I am in the room where it happens, good stuff will happen. I will not throw away my shot to work on behalf of all of us!!!”
    `
What if Trump — instead of calling Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer “head clown” — had tweeted: “Chuck, you are THE MAN!!! Top Democrat now that Obama’s gone!!! You love to deal. Send me your best health care experts and we’ll fix this thing together in 24 hours, so every American gets better, cheaper care. We’ll both be heroes (well, me just a little bit more). Call me!!!”

That is the sound of magnanimity. It would have generated a flood of good will that would make solving every big problem easier. And it would have cost Trump nothing.

    1. If Trump did that, then he wouldn’t be Trump.
      .
And he very likely would not have won.
      .
As far as the cast of Hamilton goes, I thought the first job of entertainers was to entertain, and since they deprived Mr. Pence of his evening of entertainment (or, at least, disrupted it), then they should have refunded him his tickets.
      .
And Schumer? Trump’s comments to Schumer fall under the classic “truth is an absolute defense.”

      1. Actually, the first job of an actor and a play is to tell a story. Plenty an audience is uncomfortable with a story that’s told…and it’s by design.

      2. Jay…you’re done here. I am sick of you and your support for this áššhølë and your relentless badgering of anyone who disagrees with you and with your lies (the latter two points explaining the former, I suppose.). Henceforth all your comments will be disemvoweled as soon as they are noticed, and this response will be the last I make to you. I invite anyone else to join me.

        Good bye, Jay.

  4. Needs tightening up. Tweets have a 140-character limit; your is 163.

“I regret John Lewis believes my presidency is illegitimate. Regardless, I hope he and his peers will help me make America great again.”

BTW, Lewis initially said that this would be the first inauguration he’d have missed since he took office. He’s now corrected himself to say yeah, he did skip Bush 43’s inauguration in 2001.
    .
Because he thought Bush 43 was illegitimate.
    .
Apparently it slipped his mind or something…

  5. I thought he should have said/tweeted “In regard to John Lewis, he will be missed.

    But yours is much better

  6. The problem with your solution Peter is that Trump doesn’t believe what you wrote. He’s not looking forward to working with John Lewis. He wants John Lewis on others like him to bow down, recognize his coronation, and get out of the way so he can do whatever the hëll he wants. That’s the way CEO’s think. If it was up to him he’d fire the House and Senate and privatize America like one of his companies so he wouldn’t have to deal with pesky things like “checks and balances” and “advise and consent”.

You wrote what a good Press Secretary would have written and a good President-elect would have signed. Be it wouldn’t be sincere for Trump and his followers would see right through it. They want the “Real Trump” no matter how petty and base that person is. And as long as keeps on playing to the crowd like he did in his campaign, big-tent, revival speeches, it’s never gonna change. The only sacrifice is civility and respect for other people.

I fear that’s what have to look forward to for the next 4 years.

  7. Trump is just want we need to lead this country of Baby Men and former comic book collectors living in their parents basement. Oh and Gender Benders due to ingestion of sugary cereals that Millennials are too lazy to make. Always a fan of the Pad.
