Here’s my guess about STAR WARS

So I’m back from nearly two weeks of traveling around, first to Greece and then Oklahoma, and my body has finally adjusted to local time. And I’m catching up reading “Entertainment Weekly” which is currently drowning in “Star Wars” coverage.

So here’s what I think.

“Star Wars” has traditionally been a story about families. I think that will continue. I think Kylo Ren is the son of Luke Skywalker, and Rey is the daughter of Leia and Han.

I’m sure others have put this theory forward, but there it is.

  1. I hadn’t even thought of Kylo being Luke’s KID! ARGH! That’s just beautiful, tidy and thematically resonant enough to work.

  2. I think Rey & Ren are Han & Leia ‘s twins. I think Luke took them, separated them and made Han & leia forget …. Luke was too afraid to have the twins grow together with the force. Whacha think of that , mr. David? Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

    1. That’s Anaakin to you.

Seriously, I do like PAD’s idea. I’ve also read somewhere that one of the ideas from the novels that Abrams really liked was Han and Leia having twins, so perhaps that figures in here…

  3. Don’t anyone take this too seriously, which happened on another website where I posted this. But, if “Star Wars — The Force Awakens” flops, will the result be a recession or depression for the country?

  4. Mr. David it was a pleasure to meet you in Athens. I was the guy who wore the “Joss Whedon is my master now” t-shirt and brought you his entire captain marvel collection for you to sign. You were kind enough to do so and I thank you very much for that.

I hope your experience at Athenscon was a pleasant one. It was the first time a convention of this grandeur was held in Greece, and I hope next year’s will be even better.

I never thought I’d get to meet you and say thank you for all the laughing and crying, but now I have. The truth is that afterwards I couldn’t stop smiling!

    Happy thanksgiving!

  5. PAD,

As Orville said to Wilbur, “you’re wright.”*

About there being some sort of family connection between one or more of the new characters and the original ones; I don’t know much about the new characters (I’m satisfied to learn about them when I see the movie), so I can’t speak to your specific theories.

And speaking of theories, some thoughts/observations:

    1. A year or more ago, when a short teaser trailer was released showing John Boyega’s character of Finn removing a stormtrooper helmet, there was apparently a hue and cry that he couldn’t be a stormtrooper because he wasn’t a clone of Jango Fett. What I found amusing about such protests was A) why should we assume stormtroopers would still be clones, all those decades later? and B) at that time, how could we be sure Boyega’s character was a stormtrooper and not a disguised rebel? Han and Luke disguised themselves as stormtroopers in Star Wars, after all.

Yes, as I understand it, we now know that Finn is a former stormtrooper who has changed sides; but I don’t think anyone knew anything about the character when we first saw that clip.

    2. In 1997, PAD wrote a “But I Digress” column about “Skippy the Jedi Droid”, in which he pointed out a huge plot hole in Star Wars that wasn’t a plot hole in 1977, when the movie came out: That Leia should have sent the Death Star plans by E-Mail.

I’ll be curious to see whether any post 1977-1983 technology will be reflected in The Force Awakens, whether it be current tech or something more vintage from a 2015 POV (“commander, we’re receiving a fax from the Millennium Falcon.“). Even though these movies are set “a long time ago”, I’m sure if E-Mail was in common use in 1977, it would have factored into the plot in some way.

    3. In either the 2009 Star Trek or Star Trek: Into Darkness, they put R2-D2 into a scene showing debris from a battle as an Easter egg. But there’s an in-universe explanation for how Artoo, who was from not only a long time ago, but a galaxy way far out there (to mangle a well known phrase), could still be around in the 23rd century in our galaxy.

When they made astromech droids, they made them to last.

    4. Speaking of Luke, a few weeks ago, theories floated around the Internet that he actually did turn to the Dark Side in Return of the Jedi.. I don’t agree. He almost turned, realized he was about to go over the (metaphorical) edge and stepped back.

Whether he’s turned to the Dark Side in the interim, guess we’ll find out in a few weeks.

If he has turned to the Dark Side subsequent to Return of the Jedi, it’s probably Han and Leia’s fault (Han’s protests notwithstanding). No doubt when babysitting Luke’s kid(s), they let him/her/them stay up well past bedtime making the Kessel Run.

    Rick.
