Just when boycotts couldn’t get any more stupid: Star War VII

Seriously?

When the first “Star Wars” film came out in 1977, it was criticized for the overall whiteness of it. The one major black actor, James Earl Jones, wasn’t even given voice credit (his choice). This was answered with the introduction of Lando in the very next film, but still, mostly white.

So now the new film prominently features a black hero and there are actually idiots who are declaring it should be boycotted because of that? I mean, I knew there are people for whom Obama can do no right because of his skin color, but this is quite simply insane.

Thank God that there’s zero evidence the boycott will have any impact. Any film that crashes the internet when tickets go on sale, as happened last night, needn’t worry. Still, every time you find yourself wondering how stupid people are, they always seem willing to answer with more evidence.

  1. Thank you, Mr. David. Your clear thinking should be required reading for everyone–especially the idiots protesting “color.” Stupid, they are.

  2. As noted, the theaters are going to be packed, regardless. If this “boycott” just means that I won’t have to share local oxygen with someone whose every third sentence begins and ends with the phrase “politically correct,” by all means, boycott away.

“Here’s the thing, though: Click over to the #BoycottStarWarsVII hashtag, and you’ll see roughly 95 percent of those using it are talking about how ridiculous and disgusting the hashtag is, or retweet-shaming actual racist tweets. As of this writing, I had to scroll through 20-plus anti-#BoycottStarWarsVII tweets to find one that was actually in support of the movement.”

They got the attention they wanted and other people got to feel good about themselves by talking about how much they disagreed. I guess that’s a win-win, albeit one that makes the world seem just a bit more deserving of the cleansing fire of an asteroid impact.

    1. Bill Mulligan:

Re-tweeting (and therefore re-spreading) racism hashtags to show how angry one is about it gives self-puffery points without actually doing something to fight racism in your city, county, or other community.

Unfortunately, the people who you counted aren’t really helping.

      1. Well, yeah, that’s pretty much the point of that article. “Everyone spreading the hashtag — pro or anti — is giving those who started it exactly what they want”

And I’m not really much of a twitter fan at any rate but it’s especially eyebrow raising to see how many folks seem to think a hashtag is some kind of genuine action…#bringbackourgirls did not seem to really have much of any effect on Boko Haram and it’s kind of stunning to consider that some people really believed it would.

  4. Since ticket sales for C7 are already breaking records, there are no worries there. As for the trolls—
“Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.”

    1. Yyyyyeaaahhh, I’m pretty sure Twain never said that. Find me a credible source and I’ll believe it, but I don’t think that was him.

      PAD

      1. Define ‘credible’.

Quoteee and Goodread both attribute it to him. BrainyQuote does not.

I tried the MarkTwainProject.Org site, but the search function does not appear to be working just now.

What purports to be the Official Mark Twain site does not but then it also doesn’t list some we know he was responsible for such as the member of Congress/idiot one, so that doesn’t mean much.

  5. Honestly (based on all five minutes of footage there’s been so far and a whole bunch of rampant speculation), Finn seems to be the most compelling character of the new batch. He seems to fit the “Hero’s Journey” archetype more snugly than the other characters, only he’s an anonymous Stormtrooper instead of an anonymous farmboy. I definitely think he’s poised to be the new Luke-type character.

  6. When Miles Morales was introduced as the new Ultimate Universe Spider-Man, there were some people who hated it ( without actually reading the title first and giving him a shot ) and declared that their Spidey was white. Some people don’t like how society is changing and have to declare their opinions one way or another, whether we like em or not. I say, let’s roll our eyes, ignore the idiots , and go on and watch SW 7 and enjoy it like we all know we are going to.

  7. Boycotting Star Wars?

Yeah, I’m pretty sure King Canute would look at that and say “I’m just going to go back to the tides, thanks for asking.”

  8. I wish I could say that this story surprised me, but considering how the Internet often brings out the worst in people (going with Penny Arcade’s Greater Internet Fûçkwád Theory: Normal Person + Anonymity + Audience = Total Fûçkwád) I should have expected this. The only surprising part is the hyperbole of people claiming that this is “white genocide.” Really?!? You’re seriously equating casting in a movie with genocide?

At least I believe PAD is right that the boycott will not have any effect. For every person that won’t see it on its first week, there will be dozens of people clamoring to get those tickets.

  9. No, not seriously.

At least, not in any significant number.

This is another scam so the Right People can properly express their Righteous Outrage and reassure themselves that they Morally Superior to the teeming masses. It’s essentially an excuse for leftists to engage in political mášŧûrbáŧìøņ.

    1. As opposed to the political mášŧûrbáŧìøņ the Right engages in on oh-so-many occasions. Right?

Because I really doubt that this was some “scam” developed by “leftists.” If you’ve got proof (from somewhere other than your hindquarters), please provide it. Of course you won’t, because you can’t.

Just because you see evil leftists everywhere doesn’t mean that racist right-wingers don’t actually exist or that they’re posting racist šhìŧ, Jay.

      1. I think “At least, not in any significant number.” implies that yes, there are indeed racist Star Wars kooks but no, they are not in any significant number.

The “scam” part is that people are pretending this is a thing even after having it pointed out that it is not a serious thing. It would be like taking the nuttiest man-hating feminist one could find and going on at great length on how they represent feminism. then, when someone points out that this is cherrypicking to an extreme level, accuse them of denying that insane feminists exist.

At any rate, this whole thing showed that if 3 nitwits out of a planet of 9 billion decide to tweet something idiotic with the intention of getting people all hopping mad about what 3 nitwits think, the 3 nitwits are correct. Even after learning that it’s a troll by 3 nitwits, people can’t help themselves. Even when they realize that by promoting it they are doing exactly what the nitwits wanted. They just can;t help themselves.

  10. This is such a non-story, I can’t believe that people reporting on it actually chose to do so.

This is the first real Star Wars movie by a genuine storyteller in 32 friggin’ years, and these people actually think this pseudo-boycott is news?

    Gimme a break.

  11. I knew there are people for whom Obama can do no right because of his skin color, but this is quite simply insane.

    A Freudian slip is showing….

  12. Try pointing out that SW is mostly white with only 5 black actors in all 7 movies that and two of them are voice actors to a bunch of conservative fanboys and see more fireworks than you do on Independence Day.
