The PHANTOM ships this week

In case you haven’t heard–and I suspect that’s the case for many of you–I’m writing a six-issue PHANTOM limited series for Hermes Press. First issue ships this week.

I suspect many stores aren’t intending to carry it because it’s off the Marvel/DC trail, so I would strongly suggest that if you’re interested, PLEASE order it in advance.

For years fans have asked what my ideal series was and I always said “The Phantom vs. Tarzan.” That is essentially the story that I have written. Is Tarzan actually in it? Not exactly, but it’s still mostly the same tale that I’ve been planning for years, so for heaven’s sake, don’t “I’ll trade paperback it” this time around. It’s a small press and needs all the support that fans can provide. Plus Sal Velluto has done wonderful artwork on it.

So please pick it up.

    1. I checked comixology and Hermes Press does have products available through them so I would assume that the comic will be available there for the digital fans. I don’t know any other major digital comic storefronts to check to help.

  1. Ditto re: digital, and where will it best help you to buy it digitally?

-Signed, brain damaged and can’t read without panel zoom

  2. I had somehow managed to miss the announcement of the series, but I spoke to my LCS guy this past weekend and I’ll have it in my pull file this week.

  3. You want us to order “in advance” a comic that is already at the store and will be available to purchase tomorrow? I have to say, this is a puzzling request. Perhaps you could have suggested this option a bit sooner.

    1. I did. On Twitter and Facebook. WEEKS ago. But the publisher called yeaterday and asked me to do more of a push, especially for issue 2 that retailers are barely ordering. So I did. And by the way, the condescension was not appreciated.

      1. The condescension was unnecessary, but and I say this as someone who does not check facebook at all, and twitter rarely, so unless it’s at the top of the twitter feed I’m probably going to miss it and i’m guessing others did too.

Warren ellis created pre-order forms for his books when they first get listed in previews, something Kelly-Sue DeConnick has followed up with.

I’ve had this sort of conversation with my LCS guy before. His main complaint was always people never mention these things when it’s it’s relevant. The articles about it at the end of may that’s great, the problem of course is that it’s not solicited until the August issue of Previews which comes out at the end of July. So that’s two months from when someone first hears about it to when they can actually do something about it. So it’s not surprising if a) they forgot or b) they told their LGS. the LGS checks previews doesn’t see it makes a note somewhere and then forgets.

Is it our fault that this may be the only place we get news of your work?

Sure but shouldn’t this be the first place a fan of your work should be able to find news about it?

Maybe I’m wrong but i would think doing what Kelly Sue and Warren do, create an order form for your book when it’s solicited in Previews leave a link on the side if you can and do a follow up when the cut off is coming up, would increase sales.

  4. I hope this doesn’t sound nasty, because I don’t mean to be, but you should tell us about these things when Previews comes out. People could ask their retailers for the book when its easiest for the retailers to order them.

    1. The Phantom has been promoted on various comic book websites, Twitter and Facebook since May. It’s not my fault if apparently the only place you get news of my work is this site.

      1. If it is not here, newsarama or comic book resources I won’t hear about it. Please let us know here. I’ll pick it up on Comixology in three weeks. I am not sure how it works but maybe you can tell the publisher to enable the subscribe feature in Comixology if possible. That way I can buy it all in advance and show the publisher there is interest beyond the first issue.

  5. I don’t see it on Comixology but I also don’t see it on the listed on the publisher website.

  6. I missed this scouring Previews, like a lot of people. Easy fix, I’ll ask for my retailer to recorder it. I suggest anyone else interested to do the same. It takes them a couple minutes to click and order off their Diamond account. 2 weeks to arrive. Better late than never.

  7. The first issue arrived today. A great start to the series with great action and some good humor.

  8. PAD,

I hope your Phantom miniseries has excellent sales; but I’m curious why you didn’t mention it on this site, months ago, along with the posts on Facebook and Twitter you mentioned. “Covering all your bases”, as it were, would seem to be the natural thing to do. I especially don’t get why you’d mention it on Twitter, but not here. In movie terms, Twitter is the 15 second teaser trailer, while this site is the two-minute trailer.

For the record, I don’t use either Facebook or Twitter. And now that Comics Buyer’s Guide is no more, this site is pretty much the only place where I’d hear about your projects, comics or otherwise.

In any event, I’ll stop in at my local comics shop tomorrow and see if they have the Phantom mini series. If not, I’ll see if they can get it.

    Rick.

P.S. I asked this on another thread, but maybe you didn’t see it. Has Hulk Visionaries: Peter David #9 come out yet? If not, will it? If so, when? I have your entire run of Hulk in single issue format, but I like having the collections, too.

P.P.S. Is there/will there be any more Fallen Angel stories, either in comics form or other media?

  9. Ðámņ. Zero interest in the character but 100% interest in all Peter David’s work. I shall pick it up and see what’s what

  10. PAD,

I picked up The Phantom #1 at my comic shop yesterday. Good start to the story. I liked the interplay between the Phantom and Diana. I’m also curious to learn the identity of the Kamandi wannabe on the last page. I’m not familiar enough with all the characters in The Phantom to recognize whether this is a familiar figure to long-time readers of the Ghost Who Walks or someone new to them.

In any event, I’m looking forward to the second issue.

    Rick.
