Remembering to Breathe

I have been taking a Tai Chi class for a while now. It has helped balance, joints, and body awareness. One of the things I have learned is how important it is to breathe and how not breathing correctly is not great for the body over all. I haven’t been the best about breathing normally recently. I find myself breathing very shallowly or holding my breath without realizing it. I have to pause and consciously remind myself to breath normally.

Part of this I think comes form all the recent unknown that has dropped into our lives. Waiting for Doctors to tell me news both good and bad and hoping that the good will out weigh the bad. Getting almost to the next step and then being stopped by various things. Not knowing when I will be able to go home and pet my cats. Not knowing when things will return to normal and knowing that they never really will but I would like to know what the new normal is.

Caroline wants to go back to school. She wants the routine and seeing her friends and teachers. I would like to get back to the house and some of the sort of routine that I have.

Now we know when we are going home. We have plane tickets tomorrow to fly back tomorrow. She wants to go back to school on Friday.

Peter is adjusting to the routine at rehab. He likes that he is wearing clothes rather than hospital gown and that he is being allowed and encouraged to do as much for himself as he can. He knows it is the beginning but at least it is beginning rather than sitting around wondering what he is going to do next.

We slowly are picking up the pieces of our lives and figuring out how they fit together. We are remembering how to breathe.

  1. This is a very important lesson amd tough to do in this type of situation. Its wonderful that you remember this as it shows strength and courage, not that you havent already shown you have an army reserve of both. As always, my thoughts are with all of you.

  2. Kathy… Take a few days off from us, too. We know Peter is going to be Okay, thanks to your generous updates. You NEED to breathe… We will continue to keep you in our thoughts and prayers, but-take some time… Please? Do what you gotta do… We love y’all! Peter and the girls are no good, if you’re exhausted…

  3. We are all hoping for the best for the entire David family. Thanks for the updates. Take care of yourself, the family, and Peter. Continued strength!

  4. It’s amazing how much of our humdrum, everyday lives we can suddenly miss when a radical change hits. I hope all of you can soon get back to normal (and each of you can get a well-deserved break from all the stress, worry, and medical planning). Y’all deserve the best.

  5. Is there any way to donate directly without having to purchase any books/items? I’d like to help out but have no need for extra stuff…

    1. Jake, do you know anyone who might want to read one or more of Peter’s books, but for whatever reason (lack of cash, lack of access, whatever) hasn’t bought them? You could buy the books and give them to that person.

      Just a thought.

  6. I just discovered Peter David went indie the other day and purchased both of his books and left reviews. I hope that he recovers – I really enjoyed his apropos of nothing books 🙂

  7. I only just found out about Peter today through Walt Simonsons blog. Make sure he knows that all of his friends and fans are praying for him. And I’ll be making a flyer to puts up at my local comic shop tomorrow morning about Crazy8 and Amazon.

    Best wishes again,
    – Matt

  8. Monday night as I was coming home from work, I went around a sharp curve of an on-ramp, my tire blew and my truck flipped (it rolled completely over). The truck is demolished. the whole Drivers side is smashed in. I am 100% ok. Not a scrape or bruise. As everyone around me was panicking and making sure I was ok… I stayed calm.. I just… breathed.

I don’t know why I never thought of that before… just… breath. Life tends to happen. and when bad things happen… i’ve learned to just breath and let it wash over me like a pebble in a creek.

Peter/Kate and family.. you will be ok. You are all remarkably strong individuals.

  9. Peter’s writing has been an inspiration to me as a newly published author. Your own strength in this crisis, Katherine, has been a renewed inspiration to me as someone who deals with a disability daily.

With faith, hope, love and courage, you can and will overcome. I share updates regularly with my (miniscule by comparison) audience, and ask always that they join me in prayers and warm thoughts for Peter and for you as well, Katherine.

Be strong. Be well. And yes, keep breathing.

  10. Peter: Just bought “Pulling Up Stakes” (1 & 2) from Barnes and Noble/Crazy 8 Press, on my nook… The part where Vince taps the crucifix…is brilliant! LOL! OMG! “Classic” YOU! I may have to put Timothy Zahn’s “Scoundrels” down, and dig-in on these… That line, right-after, (I won’t spoil…) made my day! Thanks! Hahaha! I’m gonna love Vince’s mother, huh?
Hope you’re feeling well, today… We’re pullin’ for ya, bro. Maybe one day you can send me a friend request… I’d be honored, Sir.

  11. Kathy, Peter, et al.
Tai-chi is great! I’ve been taking it since recovering from my aortic aneurysm back in 2007 and have been at it ever since. It’s not only a great stress reliever, but also helps with balance and coordination. Maybe in time Peter can start taking classes too.
Glad to hear things are getting back to “normal”. The important thing now is not to let stuff like paperwork, red tape, and insurance representatives who are only really watching their company’s bottom line upset you. You folks do what is best for you, no matter what anyone else’s opinions on the subject are.

  12. Hi. I just wanted to share with you something I wrote on my blog today…. It’s about a brief encounter I had with Mr. David once at Dragon*Con a few years ago. Something that I think about every so once in a while… Wanted to share it with you and your family after hearing about Mr. David and your family’s recent but hopefully brief trials… Anyway.. here’s the link to what I wrote today, along with the picture I took of him at the time… Thank you so very much, Mr. David, for over 20 years of everything. 13. I just read about Peter’s stroke on ew.com (Great Hulk essay from him, BTW). I’ve enjoyed his work for a few decades now, mostly in X-Factor. I hope that he has a full and speedy recovery, and wish you and the rest of your family only the best.

  14. I wish Peter and all the David family nothing but the best. Mr. David is one of the best writers and nicest guys I have had the pleasure of meeting, and I am more than overjoyed to hear of his road to progress and rehab. Praying for all of you.

  15. Posted my copy of “The Captain’s Daughter”, ( signed by George Takei) on his wall, asking him to post how ppl could buy your books at Crazy 8 Press… Haven’t heard a response from Mr. Takei-yet. I continue to post on my wall, though…
All my best thoughts, for you…
I am LOVING “Pulling Up Stakes”! Hilariously entertaining, Sir! I tip the brim of my hat, to you…

  16. Being able to wear your own clothes is such a major plus — it was probably my single favorite thing about heading from the hospital to rehab, too. Best wishes to you all once more!
