Peter WALKED!!!!!!

That is the big news from yesterday. He stood up and with assistance he took his first steps since this whole thing started. They were few and we had to convince him to stop and sit down but he did walk. We had a good happy cry after that one.

In other good news, he spent most of his day sitting up in a chair. Baby steps but each is a jewel right now.

We are waiting for two other doctors to sign off on getting him to rehab so cross your fingers that we will be doing so. I will know some time this morning and update this post as to whether we are going or not. I am packing everything up and assuming that we are going so we can go from Orlando to Jacksonville with him and set him up in his new digs.

Ariel is taking the train from Orlando to Bridgeport today. So either way, she is starting her travels home. She needs a ride from the Bridgeport train station to her dorm room. Could the Usual Suspects that have her phone number arrange to help me get her there? Contact Ariel for the details.

After we get him settled, I am taking Caroline to Atlanta to my parents’ house from which we will depart for home. I have to return the rental car and the like. Whole bunch of new details come into play at that point but I am hoping to get her back home with her cats and familiar surroundings.

Then we wait and hope that we can get Peter back to us as soon as possible.

I will be continuing to update things on Peter’s site and on my site as I have information and the like.

We are still working on the donate button but should have something in place along with an auction to pay for the bills that we are looking at with some abject terror. But more on that later in the week when I have a moment to think things through. Right now I am still going from moment to moment solving things as best I can.

If you have gotten in touch with me and I haven’t responded, I do apologize. I will be going through my e-mail and Peter’s and get back to people in a couple of days. This goes for Facebook friending and notes and a lot of other things.

Right now my focus is on Peter and getting him where he needs to be so that he can get better and come home.

I am grateful to everyone who has helped in this situation and to everyone who cares about Peter. It means a lot to him and a lot to me.

  1. Great news! Thanks for sharing. We will continue to each in our own way send out prayers and good thoughts for Peter, you and the rest of the family.

  2. Great! I’m so happy! I’m sure everything will be okay soon! Good wishes to Peter, from Brazil!

  3. That’s one small step for PAD, but-one giant leap for his fans! Yay, Peter! So happy to hear this good news! Ya can’t keep a good man down, eh? Awesome! Crossing my fingers…

  4. I am trying *really* hard not too make a joke about Peter not being lame anymore, but am failing a bit.

Seriously, though, this is Great News. Just, please, do not try to do too much, too fast. Your drive and determination will be assets, to be sure, but don’t overdo it. Don’t hurt yourself by ruishing it. We can wait.

  5. Great news! My thoughts are with Peter and the whole David family these last weeks. Thanks for writing about the ordeal – you are giving a face to a struggle with which so many people have had to deal.

  6. Oh, such good news!!! I’m in Atlanta; I wish I could help somehow. It feels so strange to be close but also so far away. Still, the best I can do is send good thoughts, and that I shall do!

  7. As I said when you reported this yesterday, Kath, this is marvelous news. I am glad for every inch of progress Peter makes and that you are on your way to settling back to something a touch more normal.

Please don’t worry that you have to send personal messages to all of us that have written in support and encouragement. For me, at least, it is not necessary. I am proud to do whatever I can to help and I don’t need anything in return other than to know I am helping in some small way. And you have millions of other things to take care of, not just for Peter but for yourself and Caroline. So for the love of mud don’t worry about us. Just take care of business, okay?

  8. That is f’n amazingly great news. Walking, even just briefly, so soon has got to be a very good sign.

  9. So glad to hear of Peter’s progress.

A question on a slightly different topic, I went to the Crazy 8 site to place an order for his recent books which I don’t have. (I bought the Darkness of the Light hardcover when it first came out, and Camelot Press e-book when Peter had asked that everyone buy it the same day to see how high up the Amazon charts it could get. I don’t have Height of the Depths or either Pulling Up Stakes and want to get them.)

Although I did by Camelot as an e-book, I really prefer physical books. I only have an iPhone (no Kindle, no Nook) and, while I enjoyed Camelot, tiny screen isn’t really the format I like to read in. Height… is available as a paperback, so I’ll get that. Are the Stakes books only available in electronic form? If I do get them as e-books, is there a way to get them into a format that I could print out myself?

    Thank you.

  10. That’s great news — the faster the early recovery, the greater likelihood for a full recovery.

Regardless of that, there will be plateaus where no gains seem to be appearing, then a sudden gain again, and possibly repeated occurrences of this. That’s one of the most difficult parts of rehabilitation, so you have to be determined to work through these even when it seems like there’s no further good to be done.

Rehabilitation medicine is a young but fast-growing speciality as more and more information and techniques are discovered each year. The holistic approach (combined speech, occupational, physical, and even recreational and musical therapies) administered on one unit has done wonders with patients who would’ve been written off for bedridden not that many years ago. Your description is limited, but it sounds like Peter is getting the high standard of care, as best as I can discern.

Continued good wishes from my whole family here in St. Louis.

  11. The Walking Dad!

It’s encouraging that improvements are coming so quickly. I hope the rapid progress continues.

  12. Mr. David,

    Congratulations on those big steps!

I just finished reading Q Squared – boy that was fun! I very much regret they never got around to making a TNG movie with Q – but then, there is a lot I regret about the TNG movies. I’ll have to start digging through your other TNG novels…

Loving X Factor – it’s like you and the team can do no wrong! After Marvel NOW, it’s become my undisputed favorite book. I guess I don’t like change…

Thanks for giving me that interview way back in 2011. A lot of folks don’t make the time and I appreciate your candor and graciousness.

    Feel better!

    1. If you haven’t read it already, I highly suggest Q-in-Law. Q gives Lwaxana the powers of the Q, and wacky hilarity ensues. If you *have* read it already, then you already know that it’s well worth a re-read *g*

  13. Great news! Keep on being strong, brave, have strenght, faith. I’m crossing my fingers here for the rehab!

  14. Good Lord, coordinating all that travel sounds almost as daunting as the medical end of things. Kudos to you for keeping it all together. Great news on the walking.

  15. One small step* for PAD, one giant leap for PADkind! Great news, this! Thanks for keeping us updated daily.

Is Jacksonville where he’s going to be doing all his rehab, or are you going to try to get closer to home?

*Or a few small steps, but that doesn’t flow as well.

  16. *SNAP* *SNAP* All RIGHT! YEA!!
Awesome news! Very glad that he is up and able to walk a few steps.

Question: Did you take photos of Peter’s first steps? (j/k!)

It’s always tough these first few months, adjusting on all fronts to this new environment one find’s themselves in, but it will work out as time passes. Keep positive!

  17. So glad to hear the news! I’ll make a contribution as soon as the donate button goes up.

  18. That’s great news. I’m sure I’m not the only fan/blog regular who appreciates the updates, as well. Thanks for keeping us in your mind while you’re dealing with so much yourself, Kath.
