“A Lord of Time” at Dragon*Con

At the Dragon*Con Puppet Slam this year, Kathleen–with the aid of five other puppeteers (Rachel Wyman, John Hudgens, Jamie Kamin, Cheralyn Lambeth, and Hannah Miller)–brought to life my old filk song take off on Billy Joel’s “The Longest Time.” (I updated some of the lyrics considering that when I first wrote it, Tom Baker was the Doctor.) Reenacting the premise of the Joel video, Kathleen brought on the 11th Doctor who appears to have been stood up for a Time Lord reunion…only to have his disappointment turn to joy when his predecessors turn up (the fan-taken video didn’t capture the first thirty seconds which included the TARDIS arrival.)

The only problem was that we had major technical difficulties doing a pre-record, so I had to sing it live and unseen from behind the playboard. I flubbed one of the lines, but no one seemed to notice. Ladies and gentlemen…

      1. No, I just want word of it circulated as much as possible. Kath has a birthday coming up Sunday and I can’t think of a better gift than her very own viral video.

  1. Of course, now for an encore, she will have to have a puppet slam with all the doctors, and ALL the companions… 😉

    “and a cast of thousands…”

  2. Loosely related to the topic:

Have you ever cosider writing additional or updated verses to We Didn’t Start The Fire? It would be fun to see what you can come up with from the last 20 years of headlines. Or maybe a SciFi-only or comics-only version.

  3. Nice voice, Peter.

I add to the requests for a posting of the lyrics. The sound is a little muzzy in parts and I can’t make it all out. And would really like to.

Up to 433 views. Can we convince you to post at 500?

  4. Peter,

If we link back to you and give full credit, do you mind if this the video is embedded on people’s tumblrs? it’ll expand the number of people who see it, and since they are watching the youtube video, it’ll increase the views.

    1. Knock yourself out. However I’d prefer you give full credit to Kathleen. My name is in enough places; hers is the one I want to see spread around.

  5. Awesome video! (Thanks for the YouTube video: It can be insanely frustrating to hear about the cool stuff y’all do at conventions while missing out on it.)

    And happy pre-BDay to Kathleen!

  6. Well, spreading the word on some comic book related forums I frequent, I want the lyrics for it as well 🙂

  7. I had no idea you could carry a tune so well!

Everyone did an amazing job! I especially love how into the role Kathleen gets! I admit to not being well versed in the art of puppetry (save Sesame Street and the other Muppets) but it’s cool seeing her smile when the character smiles, and that she mimics what her character is doing at the same time (I know she’s supposed to be “invisible” for this, but I still thought it was fascinating)

  8. Peter, I wanted to thank you for your time at DragonCon. I had my young (4 1/2 years old) son with me, who was mostly uninterested in what you did, other than Young Justice. Instead, he wanted to tell you about trains and his Granddaddy… Anyway, you gave him attention, which I appreciate so much. Hopefully at a future convention, he’ll be much more interested. He is already excited for next year, so his first con experience was apparently not too scary.

  9. Woo Hoo!!! 1009!!!! AWESOME!!!
Just hate the fact I missed such a legendary Dragon*Con moment. Great singing, too.

  10. I see that the video has now passed 1,000 hits and I look forward to seeing the lyrics.

And, though I was going to say this on Katherine’s blog, I couldn’t find how to post it, if it’s possible over there. So, let me post here my wishes for her to have a happy birthday.

    So, she’s what, 25 now?

  11. 1009! as of 7:10am UK time today. Congratulations Kathleen.

*Waits with baited breath to see the lyrics in full*

  12. Belated, but I just got a chance to see it — bravo, both to you and Kath! Great, great fun to see; this evening I’ll have to show it to my daughter after showing her the video for “The Longest Time.”

    1. Update: I showed it to her last night. She didn’t quite make out the words initially, but then I showed her the lyrics and she and I both sang along. She loved it, and was humming it this morning — so kudos once again to you both.
