Ha Ha. I have a scoop on “Bleeding Cool”

Bleeding Cool announced yesterday that Marvel is releasing a special edition through Walmart of “The Avengers” on Blu-Ray and DVD, packaged with an all new, original “Avengers” graphic novel. But who (they wondered), WHO could possibly have been involved with the creation of it?

Yeah, uh, that would be me. One hundred page original “Avengers” graphic novel. I’ll let you find out the artist(s) on your own, but the entire story is by yours truly.

You can find out more about the package here

  1. Slightly nerdy question, but is the story set in the movie universe or the regular Marvel 616 universe?

      1. Ah, thanks. Haven’t got up with any of the “Season One” books so I didn’t realize that they were a separate continuity. Guess I’m heading to WalMart since it looks like that suitcase set might not be happening…

      2. I have to say that your story fits seamlessly into continuity from what I can tell. It’s unfortunate that the other Season Ones I’ve read– HULK SEASON ONE, in particular– do not. Still this was the best Avengers story I’ve read in some time!

  2. PAD, do you have any idea how much I hate going to Wal-Mart? Yet, it looks like I’ll be doing so.

    Gorrammit!

    –Daryl

      1. I’ll probably hit Sam’s instead. It’s slightly less crazy-making. Or, even better, see if I know anyone heading to either store anyway, give them the money and ask them to pick it up on my behalf.

        –Daryl

  3. I wasn’t planning on buying the DVD/Blu Ray, but now I might just to get the comic.

(For those wondering, yes I love the movie, but what I love more is supporting my local library by borrowing lots of superhero films from them.)

    1. There’s another David on here?

Anyway, we finally found an answer to the question, “what does it take to get me to order from Wal-Mart instead of Amazon?”

  4. Honestly… I’m sick to friggin’ death of every outlet having some different “exclusive” extra on stuff like this. Isn’t Lucas and his gajillion different releases of Star Wars enough? *sigh*

    1. Can’t you just be happy that PAD was chosen to wroite it and that they truste his abilities and marketability?..I’m sure, if you are that against buying it at Wal-Mart some people will have it on E-bay shortly thereafter.

      1. ABSOLUTELY I’m happy PAD was chosen to write it.

I’m just tired of Store A having exclusive “this”, Store B having exclusive “that”, and Store C having exclusive “& the other thing”.

As for Ebay, well, it’s a good thing it exists for situation like this, but it’s sad that it’s become the accepted default solution for this kind of noise.

      2. It’s not noise..it’s so brick and mortars – or companies in general – don’t go the way of Tower Records..or possibly Best Buy.

      3. Nah, it’s still noise. No MORE people are going to buy a copy than already are. Now they just have to choose which exclusive they want. So maybe ONE store will pull ahead if they have a cool enough exclusive by siphoning off customers from the other stores, but this doesn’t do much at all to stop or even slow the brick and mortar joints for sliding into obsolescence.

A special, tricked-out, jazzed up, sexy “Collector’s Edition”, is one thing, but multiple different versions, each with different exclusives for different stores is just an old-fashioned, irritating pain in the ášš.

      4. You all should be happy—this was the best investment I made for entertainment. No spoilers, but this was a hëll of a ride, with all story beats hitting precisely. I’ve read the other season ones, and this one, PAD GETS these guys. And The Hulk? Very inventive use of the Hulk. A winner overall.

    2. “No MORE people are going to buy a copy than already were.”

You’re completely missing the point. Its not about more people, its about where they get it from.

  5. What I find interesting is the cast list for the disc. According to the listing the cast of The Avengers is suspiciously like that of Buffy the Vampire Slayer circa Season Two…

    1. How do you figure THAT? The only Buffy alumnus I can think of in the entire cast is Alexis Denisoff, and he didn’t show up until season 3.

      PAD

    2. There must be something wonky in their database. I’m looking at it right now and the cast list is: Danny DeVito, Ed Helms, Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Rob Riggle, Jenny Slate, Betty White

      1. Maybe that’ll be the cast for the next Avengers movie. I’m keeping my fingers crossed! Just think–Danny Devito as The Hulk! Taylor Swift as Captain America! Betty Ford as the Scarlet Witch! Ed Helms as Stan Lee! It’ll be blockbuster, I tell ya. Blockbuster!

      2. Surely Taylor Swift would be playing the villain. She wouldn’t even have to play a character, she could just play herself.

  6. Thanks, but I’ll wait. I don’t care to be paying extra for Blu-Ray when I (nor most of my friends) use it. I’ve also skipped buying THE ARTIST for the same reason. They come out with a DVD only version, I’ll gladly fork out the cash, but I really don’t care for this marketing tactic.

NytWyng – Me, too. Loathe Wall-Mart and even if it’s the only place on the planet selling the thing, I’ll do without.

      1. Of THE ARTIST? Not in any of the shops around here. Nor do they admit to knowing of one. I guess I’ll have to prod more persuasively, thanks.

  7. Wait, what? Then… agh! Why didn’t Marvel say anything about this before now? Will it become available normally too, and separate from the DVD? Wah!!

I was sure Bleeding Cool was… er… well, totally wrong about this.

  8. Fantastic. I will treat myself to an early birthday present and buy that. Thanks for the link!

  9. Bummer.
    .
I am getting the Blu-ray 3D/Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. Why couldn’t they bundle the graphic novel with that version of the movie? Why with the blu ray/DVD combo only?
    .
A cool way of doing it would have been to give a stand alone copy of the graphic novel to anybody buying the movie on Walmart while supply last.

    1. I, too , am disappointed my reliable Walmart isn’t packaging your book with the 3D version…

    1. Crap I did not see it as Blu-ray only. Any chance I can shove a Blu-ray into my DVD player and have it play?

      1. It is not Blu-ray only. You get the blu-ray, the DVD and the graphic novel for $25. The DVD only is $20.
        .
Think of it as getting the DVD for $20, the graphic novel for $5 and the Blu-ray you are not going to use for free.

    2. I’ve got several Blu-Rays now and I don’t even own a player. Some films are being packaged in only combo packs. Vampire Circus was that way.

  10. Count me in. I finally have a good reason to buy a blu-ray player and at $25.00 to boot. A steal with a 100 page original story attached.

  11. “The Walmart.com website only ships orders to addresses within the 50 states, APO / FPO military addresses, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.”

    Bummer.

  12. Congrats, PAD! Sadly, this doesn’t do me any good — no Blu-Ray player (and I have a small, non-HD tv so it’s not worth getting) and I work for a competitor of Walmart — but it’s great for you, to have something included in what I imagine will literally be the biggest selling dvd of the year. (I’m surprised they didn’t wait until Christmas to release it.)

    1. James, it’s a combo pack. there’s a DVD in it as well. For $25.00, which is usually less than you would pay for the DVD and a book like this separately, you’re getting a DVD and a 100 page graphic novel with an automatic upgrade to your film library if/when you get a Blu-Ray player down the road.

  13. An Avengers story by someone other than Bendis!

    Can’t wait to read it.

Let’s just hope Brevoort didn’t get his mitts into it too much.

      1. It seems more to me Tom isn’t allowed to have his mitts involved much with Anything BMB writes.

  14. I just want the book… and not to have to try to scramble to get it in less than a month with money I don’t have. 🙁

  15. Ðámņ, and here I was all set on getting the steelbook edition from Best Buy….

That, and Id rather not buy from Wal Mart if I can help it.

  16. And it is only $25 as a pre-order–after that it shoots up to the more-expensive-than-I-would-ever-pay $40!! If it stays at $25 AND is available later on at that price, well, great, I’m happy. (I mean, aren’t the regular Season One GNs going to stay available after their first issuing? That’s part of the problem for me: Being told I HAVE to run out and get this thing RIGHT NOW when I simply WON’T HAVE THE MONEY THEN and can’t just add it to the list of Season One GNs I look forward to getting when I can afford them. If it will be available later at the same price, DVD or no DVD, then that’s great and I’m happy, but my understanding is that if you don’t pre-order it, it goes up to $40. Dear God in heaven: $40. Some of us aren’t rich, you know? Some of us have to wait on DVDs till they are available cheaper or used rather than when they come out, because $20 for a DVD is still expensive.)

    1. Oh, for God’s sake, David. Buy it, don’t buy it, it’s up to you. But no one is telling you you HAVE to do anything. Stop acting as if Walmart and Marvel have conspired to make your life miserable because they didn’t take into account what your personal financial situation might be at the moment.

      PAD

      1. OK. Me sorry. *blush* I just want to be able to afford it and not miss out, you know? I do apologize for being all angsty. It’s just–well, you know, I really want it but won’t be able to get it till later, and I probably should not assume some of the things I’ve been assuming about its availability.

      2. Oh! And (over on Bleeding Cool) you’ve corrected my misunderstanding about the price issue–I really thought that the $25 was only pre-order, and that then it would shoot up to $40. Apparently it stays at $25 as a savings off the retail price permanently. My apologies to anyone here whose confusion I may have added to. Mea culpa!!

I look forward to getting your GN when I can, and the Avengers DVD as well. 🙂 Very glad that has all been cleared up!! 🙂

      3. A very mature and much appreciated response. Other people would have shouted, “You’re being mean to me! I’m never reading your work again!” So well done.

        PAD

  17. Thank you for the heads up! Here in in Canada it’s about $28 before tax. The GN is indeed full-sized: Walmart uses the rectangular box that they sometimes use if there’s an exclusive disk, and slides the the comic in sideways so half of it’s behind the movie. Happily two movies side by side are roughly the same size as a comic so it’s a nice fit. And unsurprisingly a good read.

  18. Scored one at Sam’s Club tonight when I went in to buy grapes for my older daughter. Now we’ll see when the girls actually give me a chance to read it. 🙂

  19. Finally received this through the mail yesterday. Enjoyed the heck out of it. Especially the Fantastic Four style laying on of hands in the end scene. Loved Thor’s reaction to that scene. I guess he’s very particular about who gets to do that.(Oh, so hard to describe it without Captain Hammer style innuendo!..;))
